Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Tasted blind – light straw colour. Fairly pronounced nose with a good dose of oak treatment, leesy, stone fruit with hints of green apple and citrus. From the nose I wouldn’t have guessed Chablis. On to the palate where more Chablis typicity comes through with nice lemon, lime and green apple flavours. The mouth feel is fuller than you’d expect with medium plus weight, medium acidity and decent length. This is young but I can’t see it being 07 or 08 as there isn’t enough acidity and tension and the profile suggest a much warmer year. A nice wine but not what I think of when I think of Chablis. With lots of 05s, 07s and 08s in the cellar and 2010s coming up, tasting this bottle validated my complete passing of the 09 vintage in Chablis. Drink or hold. Good.

  • 2008 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Tasted blind – medium straw colour. This had a beautiful nose with ripe but restrained orchard fruit, lemon and oak notes that had a few of us thinking we were in the Cote de Beaune and not Chablis. On the palate if offered intense flavours with a brawny and round mouthfeel that was backed up by great acidity and a long finish. Finish had hints of honey and hazelnuts. I guessed Meursault but then embarrassed myself trying to narrow down the vineyard (Charmes was my third guess). I wouldn’t have guessed 08 as this didn’t have the tension on the palate I would have expected, but the acidity and the ripe, but not overripe fruit does fit the bill. This probably would have showed better had it been in a different lineup. Having said that, this was really good and there’s no harm in drinking it now but this will be a long ager that should improve quite a bit. Excellent. 91+

  • 2005 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Light to medium straw colour. Ok, here we go—classic Chablis right from first sniff. Minerality, lemon, lime and touches of seashells and floral. On the palate this was a tad richer than the 04 with loads of citrus, white peach and crushed rock flavor coating the palate. Overall this was slightly riper than the 04 with a touch less acidity and salinity, but this screams Chablis and nothing else. Drinking extremely well in a youthful sort of way but there’s lots more to come. Excellent. 92+

  • 2004 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Light to medium straw colour. The nose here even more classic than the 05 with pure notes of white flowers, loads of salinity, citrus and minerality. Palate is much of the same with racy, intense and mineral driven flavours with razor cut acidity and perfect balance. While the 04 and 05 are both excellent, I’ll give the slight nod to the 04 for just being hair more classy and complete. Similar to the 05 this is beautiful right now but years to go. Outstanding.

  • 2004 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Tasted blind – light gold colour. Another beautiful nose here with salinity and citrus notes but there’s a touch of honey coming through that adds a bit of succulence to an otherwise classic Chablis nose. In the mouth this was broad and concentrated and showing extremely youthfully. While the profile here is power over elegance at this stage, it maintained focus with minerality and boat loads of acidity. A very long finish wraps everything up with citrus and saline flavours. This was very 2002-like with more weight and concentration than the 04 Clos served before it. This needs a lot of time. Excellent. 92+

  • 2002 La Chablisienne Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles Château Grenouilles 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Tasted blind – Going away from our classic Chablis trend, this offered notes of guava, tropical fruits and hints of butterscotch. This was quite ripe and exotic and had me thinking that might be another ringer. On the palate it’s dense and exotic with ripe citrus and orchard fruit flavours. There are some hints of minerality that come through on the finish along with decent acidity but this has my stumped. This is notably riper than the 04 Dauvissat Preuses served before it. Very good.

  • 2008 Domaine Daniel Dampt et Fils Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Tasted blind – no formal notes. This is such a good wine and an even better value at $32 CAD. Youthful with classic citrus and minerality but with hints of riper fruit and a great acid spine. Give this a year or two more. Very good. 89+
