Introduction

We had talked about a casual burg dinner when Jeff and Marya were back from vacation, so Sunday was it.
In attendance, Jeff & Marya Samuelson, Marya's sister, Brad England, Chris Larson, and Chris Palm.
Jeff had justed finished another book by Richard Olney, and he was ready to cook.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine Dujac Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Jeff started us off with a 99 Dujac Echezeaux. The nose was great, almost kinky. The palate was tight, and somewhat unyielding. And it was an unusual tightness. For you Spinal Tap fans, it was like the volume was turned down to "5", rather than "11" (man). The rest of the group liked it better than me. I'd leave this in the cellar for a while if I owned it.

  • 2002 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

One of my bottles of the 02 Leroy Beaux Monts was a leaker, so I wanted to open it rather than store it. Pulled off the wax to find that the edges of the bottle tip seemed to be just slightly broken. Was this the possible reason for the leak? To be sure we didn't drink glass, we carefully strained the wine through a paper coffee filter. The nose was extremely funky, and the initial impression was that it might be spoiled. We brought it to Jeff's house anyway. Surprise! Not spoiled at all. This just needed some time in the decanter. On the nose, the words that come to mind are smoke and spice. This carried over into the palate as well. An interesting combination of fruit, smoke, spice - and very, very intense. Yes, intense it the right word. Drinking very well now. Will this be a wine that's open throughout its early life?

  • 1996 Domaine Leroy Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

We followed the 02 Leroy Beaux Monts with Chris' 96 Leroy Boudots. The nose was the definition of Burgundy, and a terrific drink. Lately I've had good luck with a handful of 96's - open for business. I really liked this wine.

  • 2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Before this case gets put down for a decade, I wanted to try one of the 02 La Tache's. Very glad we did. The nose was distinct and very La Tache. It was vibrant and forward, without being too primary. Totally in balance. This is an incredible wine already, and will be terrific over time. Wonderful!

  • 1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Somehow, an 88 DRC Grands Eche was sitting out on the kitchen counter (I love it when that happens - thanks Chris). My initial burg experiences in the 90's centered around 1988, so this was a treat. I'm writing this from memory the next day with no notes, and my recollection is "straight down the middle". Great wine, no surprised, as expected. We may need to try this again for some more precise notes! Ha.

  • 1994 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

This was our backup bottle, which as usual was opened even though we didn't need a backup. A quiet little unassuming wine, this was pleasant, but not particularly memorable.

Closing

A great night, and a nice prelude to tonights "Minneapolis does Piedmont", which will be a rollicking affair.
