  • 1996 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet 93 Points

The palate opened up to exhibit burnt lemon, clove, mint and lime flavours.
The finish was long and dominated by lemon cream and baked apple flavours.
This was a lovely bottle of wine but was just missing something from the other experiences that I have had with "Le Montrachet"...just not the depth, texture and sheer complexity, innervation and balance.

Flight 9 - 6eme Plat (3 Notes)

Paired with Roasted Squab, White Asparagus, Sunchoke, Blueberries & Orange

  • 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

This was very stemmy, a trait I usually quite enjoy in my burgundy, but this was too much....it dominated the wine as opposed to adding complexity. It was also quite herbal with dried flowers, cheer and mineral flavours. The palate showed sweet spice, herbs, and stems. The texture was quite nice but it was frankly a touch simple and underwhelming.
The finish was medium with moderate complexity.
This was perhaps the biggest disappointment of the evening as this had a chance to be a real star. Perhaps we caught it in a closed period.

  • 1953 Maison Leroy La Romanée 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru

Wow...this was so enthralling...notes of musk, sandalwood, cedar, dried flowers, dried red fruit.....someone commented "like the smell of a man working in the vineyard" So perfumed and fragrant. Enchanting.
Palate is so powerful and sexy...cedar, sandalwood, soy, mineral, dried flowers, mineral, subtle ginger. Unreal wine.
Finish is long with waves of flavour.

  • 1978 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 100 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

    Sheer perfection...
Nose is entoxicating, powerful, enthralling and humbling all at the same time. How did I get to this place...to drink this wine...in this moment? I am a lucky man.
Aromas of spice, mineral, nutmeg, cherry liquor, dried red flowers, earth, soy, orange zest, stems and forrest floor.
The palate is so svelte....layered, pith and pure. Pure tart red fruit, earth, forrest floor, cedar, stems, spice, nutmeg, sandalwood, and violets.
Finish is never ending, the flavours are never ending...this wine never stops. Minutes go by and I still taste it.
I want to cry....but there are all these damn people around. Awesome and jaw dropping wine.

  • 1934 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 99 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

A legend....supposedly Aubert de Villaine's favourite vintage of Romanee Conti.
This wine is so present and accounted for...it is going no where. Purchased from the Doris Duke Collection (wines brought over from France in the late 1930s pre-WWII and stored impeccably) this wine exhibited dried flowers, soy, earth, minerals, cherry, raspberry, strawberry, flowers and stems.
On the palate this was so rich and lush with white pepper, cherry, stems, dried flowers, soy, earth, minerals, raspberry and strawberry. Palate is so complex....with layers of flavour. So much going on but also so focused and "together"
Finish is never ending...finished only by the next sip. Wow, a legend. Humbled again.

The palate was touch thin but showed sweet cherry fruit, spice, sweat, mineral and earth.
The finish was medium with moderate complexity.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Wow...this was mind boggling on the nose. Aromas of dried flowers, spice, forrest floor, plum, tart red fruit, earth, mushroom and minerals.
Palate is so smooth, harmonious and integrated...there are no edges to this wine...pure tart fruit, earth, soy, cedar, sandalwood, cedar, dried red flowers and minerals.

  • 1996 Domaine Leroy Latricières-Chambertin 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Pure purfume.....dried red flowers, cherry, soy and minerals dominate this intoxicating wine.
The palate is integrated and shows tart red fruit, soy, mineral, red flowers, cherry, raspberry, strawberry and cranberry.
Finish is long, pure and layered...a peacocks tale of a burgundy.

  • 1994 Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage Nacional 94 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    This is so young....so young....
Aromas of dark cherry, bitter chocolate, brandy soaked cherry and spice.
The palate shows similar flavours of cherry, bitter dark chocolate, toffee, fig, brandy soaked cherry and spice....so spicy!
Finish is long and layers...but this is a baby. Wait 30 years if you have only 1 bottle...at least!

Flight 13 - Dessert (2 Notes)

Paired with Apple Tatin, Seared Foie Gras & Curry Anglaise

  • 1990 Château de Fargues 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Aromas of burnt brûlée, burnt orange, hardened toffee, citrus, mineral and dried flowers.
The palate is quite complex....honey, caramel, burnt brûlée, toffee, burnt orange, raisin pie, and minerals. There is good balancing acidity but this is a wine that in my opinion could use a touch more as the dried fruit flavours get overwhelmed a bit.
They finish is long and expansive. Nice wine.

  • 1990 Château d'Yquem 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    Wow...this was so lifted...so fresh.
Aromas of lemon, mint, honey, brûlée, and sweet white flowers.
The palate is so integrated and fresh...not cloying at all. The acid balance is perfect. Fresh cut mint, caramel, brûlée, lemon, minerals and flowers are everywhere!
Finish is fresh, long and elegant.
