Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2013 Philippe Colin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grande Montagne 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of concentrated salty limestone minerality, woody oak, citrus lemon. Developing.
On the palate, dry, piercing high acidity, medium alcohol, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of concentrated limestone, salty minerality, citrus lemon, slight toasty oak. Long finish.
Very good quality. Impressive minerality. Probably needs about 2-3 years' time for the acidity to tone down a little.

  • 2010 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.

On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of smoky burnt earth, sour red cherries, ripe black cherries, new leather, licorice. Medium+ finish.
Very good quality. Ripeness of 2010 on display here, and not overly done. Small gripe about the finish which didn't sustain the palate. Will keep to re-explore again in 2-3 years' time.

  • 2008 Cerbaiona (Molinari) Rosso di Montalcino 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of slight barnyard, bright red cherries, spices, tobacco. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), grippy high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of lovely red cherries, spice, tobacco, leather. Long finish.
Outstanding quality Rosso which is on the level of a Brunello. From the horrid 2008 vintage no less! My gosh! Tasted blind, no one said this was not a Brunello. My tasting note doesn't sugest lots of depth or complexity, but this is really good and stands out in terms of the balance. Drink up and enjoy.

  • 2007 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Tasted blind. Had been popped and aired in bottle for 2.5 hours before drinking.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of dense red cherries, toasty oak, spices, tobacco, chalky minerality. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), nice rounded medium tannins, ful body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dense red cherries, toasty oak, tobacco, spices, chalky minerality. Long finish.
Very good quality. Depth and complexity good, just needs some more time to achieve better integration. I would re-explore my bottle in 4-5 years' time, if I can keep my hands off it.
Aged for 4 years in 30-50 hectolitre French oak barrels.

  • 2007 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Tasted blind. Slow-oxed in bottle for 1 hour before drinking.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of classic sour red cherries, leather, earth. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), smooth medium tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of tart sour red cherries (in a good way), tomato, leather, earth. Long finish.
Very good quality. Classic traditional Brunello showing. Was unfortunately tasted in between 2 good Il Poggiones, so suffered the curse of mediocrity in comparison. Drink and enjoy over next 2-3 years.
Aged 3 years in traditional Slavonian oak barrels, and 1 year in bottle.
