HWS Game dinner 2014

Tasted Saturday, November 29, 2014 by Zweder with 354 views

Introduction

Every participant had to bring a wine (preferably a magnum or two bottles). We did not know which wines were brought by the others. All wines were tasted blind, also without knowing when the wine you brought was poured.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2008 J.B. Adam Riesling Kaefferkopf Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

This wine could be mistaken for a German Riesling with some more age on it. (And that is a compliment.) Beautiful and elegant bouquet with some petrol and minerals. Same on the palate. Slightly mature and refined wine.

  • 2011 Domein de Wijngaardsberg Pinot Noir 87 Points

    Netherlands, Limburg, Ulestraten

This wine was a nice surprise. So in the Netherlands they can make acceptable Pinot Noir. (Global warming?) In the bouquet red forest fruits and some earthy impressions. Same on the palate. Good acidity and slightly drying tannin. Light bodied, but overall certainly a very pleasant wine.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Mitolo Cabernet Sauvignon Serpico 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Drank from double magnum. Beautiful bouquet with ripe cassis and other dark forest fruits, a touch of sweetness and good vanilla from the oak. Same on the palate; sweet red and dark berry fruits, pleasant oak and soft and round tannin. A clearly new world and well made Cab Sav. Ready now and definitely for several years to come.

  • 1988 Château Balac 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Poured completely blind from a magnum for a big audience (of wine geeks) and almost everyone was enthusiastic and thought it was a late 1990's or 2001 wine. My personal (not blind) notes: Mature and rustic bouquet. On the palate quite mature, but still some red fruits and mature tannin with still a little bite. Beyond expectations still alive and pleasant. I scored it 86, but most others probably even a bit higher.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Drank from magnum. In the bouquet ripe and sweet red forest fruits and beautiful herbs and spices. On the palate also a great beauty; still youthful, but also showing signs of maturity. Beautiful acidity, tannin and good Rhone spiciness. Ready now. I am not sure if the wine will really improve, but this can easily last until 2020+

  • 1999 Leeuwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Art Series 91 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Drank from magnum. Bouquet with good dark forest fruits, smoke, toast and a hint of sweetness. On the palate also a sweet start, red and dark forest fruits, good and mild acidity and pleasant tannin as well. Mature now and no real hurry; the wine will drink nicely until 2018+ as well. 91 for tonight.

  • 2005 Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Drank from magnum. The bouquet is loaded with dark forest fruits and garrigue. On the palate beautiful dark berry fruits, herbs and spices, firm acidity and tannin. Concentrated and full bodied wine with a lot of future. From magnum this wine was very early maturity stage now with a future until well into the 2020’s. 91+ for tonight.
