  • NV Xavier Vignon Châteauneuf-du-Pape la Réserve VII IX X

Dark see through crimson; dusty, red fruit, herbs, a touch hot, fig; cherry, raspberry, hard mineral, currant, spicy, late tannin, a little medicinal; called Gigondas.

  • 2011 Ampeleia Ampeleia

    Italy, Tuscany, Costa Toscana

Dark core with maroon rim; violets, perfumed, elegant, aromatic, wild berry, red cherry, rpses, black pepper, oak; some grip, touch of green velvety tannin; was on Syrah but I understand the Cab Franc; nice.

  • 2013 Damien Laureau Savennières Le Bel Ouvrage

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

Light amber; honey, white flower, lemon and quince, golden apple, spice but not oaky, stone, very bright and fresh on the nose; fresh acid, lemon and apple, medium plus body, hinting at baked apple, pear and quince, very dry, long, needs some time for acid to soften as fat will really make this luxurious; very nice, try again in 2020.

  • 2010 Nicholson Ranch Pinot Noir Dry Farmed Estate

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Dark crimson core with duller lighter rim; sweet cooked cherry and strawberry, smoke, plush, some age; domestic Pinot, cooked red fruit, sweetness, higher alcohol, spice; all over it just not producer-never had before.

  • 2010 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Dogliani Superiore Vigna Tecc

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Dogliani Superiore

Dark core, dull reddish violet rim; dried red and dark fruit, plum, prune, spicy, concrete dust, roses; harder tannin, juicy acid, black currant, plum, raspberry, felt this needed more time; called super-Piemontese like Luigi Einaudi.

  • 2012 Chapelle St. Theodoric Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Grand Pin

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

See through ruby; spicy, mint, bubblegum, herbs, strawberry, leather; silkier texture, strawberry, plum, cooked cherry, Brett, radish, spicy, cranberry, silky texture, funk, almost like a natural wine, a bit short on finish, silkiness to tannin, refined, seemingly in dumb phase; could have been a Beaujolais/N. Rhone/Languedoc but this had a thread of Rayas that I couldn't negate, called Chateau La Tours Vacqueyras '11; personnally I would give this wine more time, well made and uniquely styled.

  • 2013 Montevertine Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

See through ruby; sweet candied rose, sexy nose, sweet cherry, cherry custard, vanilla, young Italian; soft sexy Burgundian tannin, decent fat; in a very youthful stage that will take some time before it puts on some weight, hard not to like this, not sure why scores are so low, give this time and it should be extremely elegant and special Sangio; called '13 San Giusto Chianti Classico.

  • 2013 Domaine Léon Barral Faugères

Dark core with reddish violet rim; Syrah nose, black pepper, juicy, sweet and young, candied violets, peppery, meaty, leather, no granite, silky tannin; delicious; called Clos Marie Pic St Loup; a very clean example of this wine.

  • 2005 Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Nebbiolo Il Favot

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Dark core with crimson rim; cedar, celery seed, dark dried cherry, roses, balm; juicy acid, sweet Nebbiolo based fruit; delicious, called Aldo Conterno; a very nice showing for this wine which I've had a bunch of, a great value from this vintage, some off bottles but this was great.

Closing

Looking back I was fairly on tonight. Some nice wines with varying character. One of the <$40 tastings that really overdelivered.
I would have to rank them this way:
1-Aldo Conterno Il Favot
2-Leon Barral Faugeres
3-Damien Laureau Savennieres
4-St Theodoric
