Casa Krengel - Bannockburn IL
Tasted Sunday, October 8, 2017 by Burgundy Al with 438 views
A great exploration of direct comparisons from top producers of wines exactly/ approximately the same age.
Tasted double blind. Rich apple, toasted almonds, lemon curd with good+ weight and very good balance. Easily identified as white Burg, I thought it was a good Meursault 1er Cru from a moderately ripe vintage. This was my favorite of the flight to start, but I slightly preferred LeMoine 2010 Bâtard-Montrachet when re-tasted several hours later.

Tasted double blind. This had been open several hours, with a quick double decant. Slightly reduced start, still showing rich orchard fruit with almost meaty character. Got longer, richer, better with more air. Plenty of upside.

Tasted double blind. Very ripe, very lush and concentrated. Stone fruit with some pronounced new oak spice. I certainly liked the richness, but didn't quite enjoy the faint heat middle-to-finish.

Tasted double blind. Nicely floral, but lots of reduction. Peach and good spice, but flabby and imperfectly balanced, particularly compared to the Guigal 2014 Condrieu Doriane in the next glass. Others enjoyed this much more than I did today, but I don't think anybody preferred this vs the Guigal. While I thought this white Rhone varietal, didn't think it Marsanne/ Roussanne.

Tasted double blind. Very Rhone, very rich. Floral charm with plenty of peach, but a great burst of acidity and firmness toward finish. Very long, very good now. I thought this Rhone 2013 Marsanne/ Roussanne.

Lots of VA.

Tasted double blind. Clearly Pinot Noir. Fully mature red and black cherry with slightly sweet spice. Very good balance, good length and weight. I thought this Burgundy, but recall liking the Kistler Pinot Noir cuvees from the northern Sonoma Coast sites such as Camp Meeting Ridge and Hirsch Vineyard.

Tasted double blind. Also clearly Pinot Noir with lots of red fruit and subtle savory spice and dried herbs. Slightly past its peak, but very charming, balanced and elegant.

Tasted double blind. This was probably ever-so-slightly corked, despite still showing good black fruit and better eucalyptus. Cork character really reduced the nuance here, but the wine was still quite drinkable. I thought it Martha from minute 1.

Tasted double blind. Black cherry, cassis, savory spice and earth hints. Very good power and weight. Clearly Cabernet-based, but so elegant and perfectly balanced that I thought it Bordeaux.

Tasted double blind. Black fruit with good balance and spice hints that was certainly pleasurable, but also certainly simple. Others liked this more than I did today, particularly after the wine was unveiled. I really didn't get any of the Margaux pedigree here.

Tasted double blind. Seemed very Bordeaux from a leaner vintage. Good fruit, good weight, slightly rustic structure with some pronounced acidity on finish. Better with food than on its own.

Tasted double blind. Ripe black fruit with moderate power but very good balance with some hints of dark chocolate, earth and cassis. Came across like a very good New World Cabernet made in an elegant, Old World style.

Tasted double blind. Open 2-3 hours before serving with a double decant. Powerful, dense and very engaging without coming across as ripe. Long and expanding. Better with food. Very good+.

Tasted double blind. Black plum and cherry with some cassis and faint spice. Rich start, good+ weight and length. Drinking wonderfully now, but this will most likely continue to drink well for another decade.

Tasted double blind. A baffling wine I could barely enjoy. ultra ripe with so much chocolate, vanilla and cassis that it came across rather manipulated, which I don't think is the Peter Michael aspiration.

Tasted double blind. Clearly bordeaux, but seemingly in a semi-modern style. Powerful start and middle, nicely elegant middle-to-finish. Overall good+ balance and length. I don't think I have tasted this wine since en Primeur in 2006.

Tasted double blind. Black cherry, liqueur, both sweet and savory spice. Very dense and powerful, but easily remains harmonious. Really charming now.

Tasted double blind. Clearly New World, but also clearly made in an elegant, Bordelais style. Moderate weight and power, very good length, lots of nuance already. Good now, with upside.

Tasted double blind. Clearly very good, seemed very New World. Certainly enjoyable with dessert, but I thought it slightly one dimensional.

Very pleasant and refreshing, mostly showing simple red berry character.
