  • 2006 Henri Goutorbe Champagne Grand Cru Special Club 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (4/13/2018)

Extremely intense nose, with a lot of bruised apple, some sweet pear, and a slight bit of breadiness. The palate is incredibly intense, with a slight earthy and mushroom quality, counterbalanced with lots of fruit. Good mineral cut and acidity here, a very solid Special Club. To me, this shows the pinot characteristics in an extremely prominent fashion. Good stuff.

  • 2015 Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

    (4/13/2018)

As far as Puligny goes, this is a little less shaped and linear than I prefer. The nose is a little diffuse and broad, showing a lot of ripeness, sweetness, and a touch of oak. The palate doesn't have the cut that I want from a white Burgundy. Again, it's a little diffuse and soft, with lots of sweet fruit and tropicality. This is decent, but not what I look for if I was going to open a bottle of white Burgundy.

  • 2015 Pierre Gonon Ardèche Les Iles Feray 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Ardèche

    (4/13/2018)

Lip-smackingly delicious syrah. It's such a fussless, delicious bottle, with its exuberant, effusive fruit, and mild saline olive notes on the nose. Young, yes, but it's not the most complex and potent wine on the palate. Enjoy it for its youth -- it's absolutely brilliant.

  • 2001 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

    (4/13/2018)

This has the red-fruited character that I love in the 2001 vintage. It's a brighter, red character, with a little bit of crunch still. The acids are youthful and juicy, and there's plenty of fruit character here. But then you get to the palate and realize this is actually still a very ornery, shut down wine, with lots of grainy tannin. A touch thin and a little hard to approach now.

  • 2014 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Monthélie 1er Cru Les Duresses 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Monthélie 1er Cru

    (4/13/2018)

I was a fan of Lafon's reds for a while, then I found them too oaky, but this one might be enough to start bringing me back to the fold. This is light and airy, but never weak or watery. Bright red fruit, with a lovely vein of acidity. Very nice, if a little expensive for what it is.

  • 2011 Philippe Colin Chevalier-Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

    (4/13/2018)

The nose here shows a little bit like a Hong Kongese egg tart. Sweet, with a touch of oak and a generous amount of richness. The palate is very similar, but there's a bit of fatness here that almost drives me to think more of Batard than of Chevalier. However, there's still great mineral cut and freshness here.

  • 1996 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon Rosé 95 Points

    France, Champagne

    (4/13/2018)

A brilliant champagne, there's just no way around it. This is probably one of the best mass-released Doms in recent history. An intense nose, with some red fruit here (it seems like this would be an easy champagne to identify as a rose if served blind). There are some mushroom notes on the nose and palate, and the sappiness here gives this a very, very intense quality. The mousse is creamy but still lively. Great stuff.

  • 2010 Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos du Fonteny 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    (4/13/2018)

Surprisingly woody and stemmy on the nose; it's almost coming across almost a little green. Thinner red fruit on the palate, with a little bit of astringency. Not particularly enthralling, especially coming from a producer that I generally love so much.

Flight 2 (23 Notes)

  • NV Ruinart Champagne Brut Rosé 88 Points

    France, Champagne

    (4/14/2018)

A very brightly coloured rose, showing some intense red-fruited aromatics (probably another rose that seems more rose than others), as well as a bit of chalkiness. Moderately floral on the nose as well. The palate shows just a hint of barnyard funk, which is, perhaps the most peculiar aspect of this wine. Fresh and tasty, but not the most complex of rose champagnes.

  • 2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault Les Narvaux 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    (4/14/2018)

Lots of reduction on the nose (which I like) but way too much Californian fruit on the palate (which I don't like). A bit less complex or concentrated than the better vineyards, but this captures so much of the PYCM character. Very fleshy and ripe on the palate, with some sweeter fruit; mostly a white-fruited character and a slight bitterness on the back end.

  • 2014 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St. Jean 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    (4/14/2018)

Perhaps a smidgen darker than I'd be comfortable with. But the nose is clean and lean, with good lemony freshness. No signs of premox though. On the other hand, this is a little bit butterscotchy and ripe on the palate. There's a lot of chewiness here, with a bit of bitterness that I'm not a fan of.

  • 1987 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

    (4/14/2018)

Probably a little past its prime, but this is still surprisingly alive. It's not great but it's fairly interesting. Earthy, with some fruit left. But the palate is mostly faded at this point. Short. Drink up.

  • 2004 Domaine de Montille Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Cailleret 83 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

    (4/14/2018)

Very odd. Nose of apple juice and parsnip. So weird. The palate is a bit better than the nose, but it's not quite right either. Doesn't seem premoxed though. Good acidity but not convincing at all.

  • 2015 Charles Van Canneyt Charmes-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    (4/14/2018)

Very nice and bright red fruit on the nose. Crunchy palate and some really nice fresh fruit on the palate. Good ripeness here, obviously youthful and crunchy with some powdery tannins. Obviously needs time.

  • NV Emmanuel Brochet Champagne Premier Cru Extra Brut Le Mont Benoit 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

    (4/14/2018)

L 10/09, disgorged January 2014. 4 g/L dosage. A nice bit of apple and chalkiness on the nose. Really nice and bright with great fruit on the nose and palate. A mild bit of salinity but really dense and powerful on the palate. An outstanding champagne with lots of minerality and acidity. So good.

  • 2013 Charles Van Canneyt Charmes-Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    (4/14/2018)

A little thin on the palate; a clear step down from the brilliant 2015. This is a little lighter and not as concentrated, but there's still quite a bit to love. Clearly the weaker vintage here. The palate is a little weaker and there's a little bit of weediness that I'm not thrilled with. Still, an excellent drinking wine.

  • 2015 Charles Van Canneyt Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

    (4/14/2018)

Shows some intense oak characteristics on the nose. Even bigger and more dense than the Charmes. Blacker fruit, but so much density and power. This shows more closed down than the Charmes, and will clearly need a lot of time to show its stuff. On the other hand, there's no debate that this is the better wine.

  • 2010 Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    (4/14/2018)

I've always thought this was a little bit of a runt in the Dujac lineup but I think that this brilliant vintage does this wine very, very well. Classic Dujac brown spice on the nose, with bright red fruit. The palate is taut with tons of earthiness. Not the most expressive and generous wine, but there's still an incredible amount to like here on the beautiful nose alone.

  • 2013 Charles Van Canneyt Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    (4/14/2018)

I really hate to put this note here, but my pour of this was done in by a really poorly cleaned glass.

  • 2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ancegnières 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet

    (4/14/2018)

I liked this a lot more than the Maltroie from a few months ago. This is crisper and leaner, though it still displays the classic hallmarks of PYCM. Fatter on the palate, but there's enough cut and acidity here that helps that through the fat here. I've always gravitated towards this bottling (perhaps PYCM just does better at the low end where the wines don't get too big).

  • 2014 Vincent Dancer Meursault Les Corbins 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    (4/14/2018)

A little stinky and reduced on the nose, as most Dancer tends to be. I'm generally fan of reduction but this is definitely over the top for me. Good ripeness of the fruit here, but there's a leanness here that just doesn't fill out for me. This needs a little bit more body, really. It's very much in the style, but too reduced, sulphurous, and lean. The more Dancer I try, the less convinced I am of these wines.

  • 2015 Charles Van Canneyt Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    (4/14/2018)

This shows some significant oak notes as well in the form of some coffee notes. The oak character here is stronger than the Beze (which I actually preferred to this wine). It's still preternaturally young, with lots of grainy tannins and closed-up flavours; I'm sure this will get better with some more time, but it's a little weaker right now.

  • 2008 Domaine Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin 70 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

    (4/14/2018)

I've trashed Ponsot a lot (because I think his wines are mediocre and uninteresting) and raised the 2008 lineup as an exception in the past. But this bottle is terrible. Smells like mulch and dirt. Advanced, sour, and downright unpleasant. It's possible that something isn't right, but I can't pinpoint any particular flaw. Undrinkably bad.

  • 2000 Ridge Monte Bello 95 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (4/14/2018)

Now this is a proper bottle of cabernet. So much power and richness from the fruit here, but it's all counterbalanced by a judicious touch of American oak. The palate is starting to show some slight secondary characteristics as well (as well it should -- it's 18 years old now!). Very powerful, but silky, and no obtrusive notes here. Just brilliant. So glad I have more of this.

  • 1976 Dorrenberg & Heyden Dienheimer Falkenberg Auslese 90 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

    (4/14/2018)

Lots of orange peel on the nose and palate here. Incredibly rich and sweet, with tons of heft here, alongside a little bit of mushroom. Good acidity, but some astringency on the back end. Very powerful and sweet, this still has some serious life to it, but I'm not certain it was properly stored for its entire life.

  • 1976 Staatsweingüter Eltville Steinberger Riesling Auslese 93 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

    (4/14/2018)

Incredibly rich and powerful nose and palate. Some good ripe fruit here, with some intense botrytis and petrol aromas. Honeyed, floral, and outrageously intense. Great sweetness and power here. The palate shows a little of those petrol notes as well, but despite the aromatics on the nose, this isn't as opulent and rich. Still, a fantastic riesling.

  • 2003 Weingut Knoll Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Loibenberg 85 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    (4/14/2018)

It's a really weird wine that's hard to understand for me. Savory and smoky, with some interesting salinity as well. Just weird. It doesn't show roastedness, but it's not over-the-top ripe either. Just kind of heavy and ripe (as so many Austrians can be), and while it's good that there's not much waxiness here, this doesn't hold its 13.5% well at all.

  • 2014 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 95 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    (4/14/2018)

An incredible nose and palate on this wine. Like what the hell, what is this wine, why haven't I heard of it before, and how do I acquire some? The nose is brilliant -- classic Australian eucalyptus and green herbs, minty and high-toned, and so much tart black fruit. Absolutely brilliant palate as well -- lithe and powerful, with herbal tones and bright acidity. Stunning and revelatory.

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    (4/14/2018)

#11-95, 8.5% abv. Holy shit. Insane and intense with so much botrytis on the nose. Orange peel, orchard fruits, just a massive mix of everything that you want from a riesling. The palate is sweet and incredibly intense, but there's an airy lightness here that gives this an ethereal quality, despite the crazy sugar and concentration. Finishes long. Really, really long. Stunning riesling.
