Laduree NYC W Broadway

No idea how cool this venue is. I thought it was just a macaroon store, but actually it's pretty deep storefront with a lovely outdoor space. And some good food as well. Nice for an auction.
So my favorite wine was prob the '88 La Turque or the '90 Cheval Blanc, but man there were a lot of good ones. Like the '99 Unico or the '89 Cristal. This was a lovely evening.
2009 Marguet Champagne Grand Cru Les Crayères
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
A wine that tastes a lot like the name. It pours pretty tight and doesn't give much at first, but with some time it opens up and mostly comes across as a bit chalky with some mineral notes. More time and then it's a touch of herbal as well. Interesting and fun, but needs time.

1986 Château Lafite Rothschild
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Had this a month ago and it again continues to be very tight. Clearly to early to be drinking and may even be in a quasi-dumb phase. Some black fruits and more library poking through.

1982 Château Latour Grand Vin
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
This is also a bit tight and slightly closed although a bit more expressive than the '86 Lafite from right before. It's barnyard funk on the nose all the way and then mostly black fruit jumping out of the glass. A touch of the barnyard at the end. Nice wine.

1975 Château La Mission Haut-Brion
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
This is very much like what I would imagine an old library with the creaky leather and maybe a touch of cigar and the dried paper would taste like in a glass. Plus a touch of potpourri and maybe some dried fruit.

1990 Château Cheval Blanc
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
One of my favorite wines of the day. This was special. Black fruits and pepper and young and almost a hint of spicy. It is drinking really well right now, but seems to be going strong with many years left. Very tasty. The best of the Bordeaux.

1970 Château Trotanoy
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Amazing how nice and fresh this was. Funny because I got a bit of the bell pepper flavor to it which I wasn't expecting since this is Pomerol, but there you have it. Not as many notes on it. Nice wine that was very tasty.

1988 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
A complete and total stunner once again. This is black fruits and meat and brine and intensity with finesse all in one glass. The WOTN. Served next to some DRC and while I skipped the DRC most others who tried agreed that this was the star. Awesome wine.

1989 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut
France, Champagne
From a magnum. Opened most of the day by the time we tried, but it was just awesome. As one person put it 'possibly the best champagne I've ever had'. This was a touch oxidized but then like caramel in a glass. Great acidity. Some sweet. Maybe even a hint of mint. Very interesting and basically delicious.

2002 Château Haut-Brion
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
I assumed this would be much too young and while it was young, it was very approachable right now. The fruit just jumps out of the glass. Lots of darker style like a plum and maybe a blackberry. Then a bit of menthol and maybe almost a eucalyptus which surprised me some. Very tasty.

1999 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único
Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Opened and decanted at the beginning of the day and so by the time we were drinking this it had prob had 7 or 8 hours. One of my most favorite wines of the day. Knowing this producer, this isn't a wine that can be pnp'ed. In fact, even with the decant it was still a bit of a beast. But it's got lots of dark fruits and red fruits and spice. Too young for the oak to really have faded at this point. And man did it open up in the glass. Will keep ours sleeping for at least 10 more years.

1997 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône Château de Fonsalette Reserve
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
I always really like these and this one was no different. It's more herbal than red fruits although those are there as well. Amazing the way Rayas can pack so much flavor into such a very light and delicate wine. Very tasty.

1982 Château Canon
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Still showing very well. Very fresh. Lots of black fruits and almost a light library where there is less of the dust and heavy curtains and more of the wood and books and sunlight. Nice wine.

1988 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Villero di Castiglione Falletto
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Next to the '89. This was really nice. Felt like it was in a good spot. Good balance between the spice cabinet and red fruits. Only thing was the end felt a bit tired. But otherwise, very good.

1989 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Villero di Castiglione Falletto
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Back to back with the '88. This was great. It's a lot younger and perhaps a bit less pulled together. Tons of spice and black fruits and mint. More expressive than the Faletto Riserva we had earlier in the year. Tasty.

2001 Château Margaux
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
This is still very young. I mostly get soy which is a bit funny. Some red fruits. It's a nice and tasty wine, but needs some more time for everything to pull together.

2001 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve le Clos du Caillou
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
This is still way too young, but interesting. When you first pour it's a touch alcoholic and definitely needs some time. After a bit of time though that blows off and then you get this very deep and interesting wine with some lovely red fruits and a bit more spice cabinet and just tasty. I'd wait another 10 years to pull one though. This needs some more time to chill. Or decant for >2 hours.

2006 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Baby Chave! A clear sign that this is another wine that really appreciates the 20+ years in the bottle. At this stage the wine is almost a tough more disjointed. Very intense. Lots of fruit and some meat and alcohol. But it's just too much. Give it time.

2001 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
I am really not a Burgundy person which anyone who reads my notes knows.
That being said, I think G. Roumier may be exception. There is a certain elegance (one that I also appreciate in Rayas) that these wines seem to have. Just this almost weightless style. But still lovely. More savory in style. It's a pretty wine. And while I don't like Burgundy, I did enjoy this.

2000 Château Angélus
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
This wine is continuing to impress. After having had some very mediocre experiences with Angelus, this is 2 good ones in one week. To be fair, it's pretty super young. A bit tart. Some fig and plum. But a touch of floral and nice and a wine that really will be something.

1991 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Part of the morning tasting line-up which I missed. It wasn't showing as well as one would hope and so I got a mostly full bottle at the end of the night to enjoy. Interestingly enough, very different than how it was described. It's true this wine is more reserve and not in your face, but still really nice. Black cherry of all flavors, grandma's spice cabinet, a smooth and easy to drink wine. I found myself going back again and again. Very tasty.

1987 Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Bates Ranch
USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
It is amazing what old California can do. Perhaps a touch overshadowed by some other wines in this line-up. But still quite nice. Amazing how it still comes across as young. Perhaps a touch of alcohol, but that would blow off quickly. Touch of tannin. Nice taste.

1995 Château Trotanoy
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Very nice wine. Still super young. Very bright. It's got a pretty strong tannic backbone. Some darker fruits. It's a wine that seems like it has all of the stuffing and just needs a bit more time.

1995 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Millésimé
France, Champagne
I always like this wine. It went for a bit more than we would have liked at the auction, but we really enjoyed it. Nice and toasty but also a bit with the green apple and a hint of sweet. It's very pretty. Not overly intense, but interesting. Very tasty.

1982 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Have never had one of these with this much age, but it was fun. I didn't take any detailed notes unfortunately. I remember it had a good aged character. Touch of the library. Fruit more faded, but the secondary and tertiary carry the wine. It's nice.

1959 Château Léoville Las Cases
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Pretty surprising how young a wine that is almost 60 years old can taste. I didn't take great notes on this. it was the last wine of the night and a bit night. But still. I remember thinking very fresh. Very interesting. It's one of those wines that was aged just perfectly and it's hard to argue with that. Great.
