Tasting, brief note. On the rich side for Chablis, this comes across as ripe on nose and palate (to start). Brighter from middle through finish, with good acidity and minerality coming through, while still ripe. Good weight and length with 1er Cru density.
Small glass, tasted blind. Clearly from a ripe vintage and lacking the acidity and structure to remain exciting at this age. Started out reasonably enjoyable, but quickly became slightly muddled in glass.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Small glass, tasted blind. We knew this was from 1990, which explained the ripeness, but there was also plenty of elongating structure. Density made me think this Gevrey 1er Cru, so impressed when unveiled.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Served this blind to the tasting group, once the previous wine was unveiled as Burguet 1990 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, the earlier version of "Mes Favorites." Dense black fruit with roasted meat that helped most people identify this as from Gevrey. Old vine concentration clearly comes through, giving very good weight for its level. Still slightly backward, this certainly still has upside.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
Small glass, tasted blind. Mostly red cherry aromas and flavors in a bright but lighter style that had me surprised it was Grand Cru. Re-tasted a few hours later with the same impression.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Small glass, tasted blind. Significant reduction made this difficult to assess at first. Clearly from a less ripe and younger vintage. Bright red fruit with mineral textures. I've never been thrilled with Groffier's 2013s and this was good, probably 90 points, but not at the quality level or concentration I'd expect.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Small glass, tasted blind. Meaty character, clearly underripe with faint bitter hints. Good density made me think this 1er Cru, but somewhat lacking some volume. Probably limited upside.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Small glass, tasted blind alongside the Champonnets. I immediately thought them from the same producer, and when asked if horizontal or vertical, thought them more likely from the same vintage (but I thought 2014). More red than black cherry on nose and palate, bright and fun with good balance and length, medium weight.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Small glass, tasted blind alongside the Goulots. I immediately thought them from the same producer, and when asked if horizontal or vertical, thought them more likely from the same vintage (but I thought 2014). More red than black fruit with good weight and length, ending with an expanding finish. I slightly preferred this over Goulots.
Small glass tasted blind. Red cherry with subtle spice and floral notes that cam across as charmingly "Volnay" with moderate weight. Good structure and balance that did not seem as big/ ripe as I would expect from 2009, but clearly from a good vintage that drinks well now.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Small glass, tasted blind. Starts out as a ripe and mostly modern styled wine, clearly showing new oak. But also good weight and length, seemingly brightening up from middle through finish. Similar to previous bottles from a few years back, but more nuance is starting to emerge.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Small glass, tasted blind. Clearly an old wine with lots of good substance, showing red fruit, earth and enticing textures. I never would thought this from 1967 given its ripeness and freshness, but this was so good, no matter what might have found its way into the bottle (non Pinot?). Late/ recent release from Remoissenet.
Small glass, tasted blind alongside the 1996. Bright and ripe red fruit with baking spice. Very good balance despite the ripeness, good weight. So good now. Great Villages.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Small glass, tasted blind. More red vs black cherry with lots of savory spice, some braised meat. I thought this Grand Cru based on its density and complexity. Very good length as well. I haven't had this wine in a decade and enjoyed it as much today as back then.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Small glass, tasted blind. Ripe core of black fruit that is aging gracefully for the 2003 vintage with plenty of balancing structure. That rich core of fruit made me think this 1er Cru, and the wine's ripeness made me think this from Morey or Gevrey. Good now, holding steady.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Small glass, tasted blind. Slightly dirty, but not necessarily in a bad way, and I expect some of that character would have blown off with more air. Rich black and red fruit underneath with impressive concentration for 1er Cru (coming from old vines). Spice, fruit and textural complexity already unfolding in the few minutes in glass.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Small glass, tasted blind. Red and black cherry with subtle woodsy spice. Ripe but clearly impeccably balanced. So good now, with good weight and length.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Small glass, tasted blind. Rich red fruit still more prominent than its earth elements, with sweet spice and leather aromas. Similar flavors with silky tannins and complex minerally textures throughout. Good+ weight, good length. I doubt there is any upside, but this is so enjoyable right now. I have always been a big fan of Groffier's 1989s and this bottle was another great success.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Small glass, tasted blind. Meaty character with slightly more black fruit than red plus subtle spice. I first thought this a very good Gevrey Villages based on its flavor profile and medium+ density. Still bright with very good balance with the great structure of the vintage that has enabled well made wines to age this gracefully.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
Small glass, tasted blind. Rich and concentrated red fruit aromas, flavors with sweet spice and soft tannins but also a good backbone and balance. Medium density made me realize this to be a great Villages level wine, especially for much-aligned Chassagne rouge. Good now with upside.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Served blind to the tasting group. Combination of black and red fruit with structural elements in the near background, but never too pronounced. Lots of power here, with nuanced spice. Plurality of tasters were able to correctly identify this as Grand Cru, with good+ length and weight for its level.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune
Small glass, tasted blind. Mature sweet and tart red cherry aromas with earth and mushroom. Similar flavors with more earth notes and slightly less complexity and charm. Medium weight helped me realize this is a very well made Villages wine from a very good older vintage. 91 point nose, 88 point palate.
2016 Domaine Laroche Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons Vieilles Vignes 89 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. On the rich side for Chablis, this comes across as ripe on nose and palate (to start). Brighter from middle through finish, with good acidity and minerality coming through, while still ripe. Good weight and length with 1er Cru density.
