Nose: rice cake, candy, tar, hints of rose, leather, smoke, ripe cherry Notes: this somehow has an old barolo kind of nose with the combination of tar and leather that's almost smelling like shoe oil. While there were hints of very ripe cherry and hints of rose the overall experience was quite underwhelming. In fact the aftertaste has been quite confusing and mixed from beginning to end. I recall 2001 to be quite a humid and rainy vintage and remained to be a difficult year for mediocre winemakers. Unfortunately this is one of those wines. Possibly one of the least impressive Bonnes Mares I've had and this is past its prime already. Drink: now+ Rating: 84

The nose was incredibly inviting with cool notes of menthol, cherries, forest floor... acidity was medium high (wish it was a little less acidic) but a memorable pinot for sure

Attractive nose of mature black cherry with some funk and good spice notes. Clearly Grand Cru concentration with rich fruit that envelopes the mouth. Lingering, elegant finish. A tame Bonnes Mares!

Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind Burgundy (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL): Served blind to the tasting group. Combination of black and red fruit with structural elements in the near background, but never too pronounced. Lots of power here, with nuanced spice. Plurality of tasters were able to correctly identify this as Grand Cru, with good+ length and weight for its level.

(Vougeraie Bonnes-Mares) The vines are in Chambolle – just. Medium cherry colour. The lovely nose has traces of vanilla and sweet red fruits. Again a deep core of fruit on the palate. Lovely acidity and lovely length. A very fine example.
