Introduction

Getting us out of our comfort zone and forcing us to drink more domestic. My gripe is that domestic wines can be great but they do not show their best given the context of [mainly] old world wines at our regular tastings. This prevents context from clouding our judgement too much.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2006 Fisher Vineyards Chardonnay Mountain Estate

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Golden yellow; older Chard nose, butterscotch, aged, touch maderized, matchstick, wax, yellow fruit; called '01 Mt Eden.

  • 2008 Hartford / Hartford Court Pinot Noir Arrendell Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Reddish violet with pale cloudy rim; confected plums, tar, reduced, sweet tarts, rocky, red berry, tart fruit, sweet sappy finish; very powerful for Pinot, really thought this was a domestic CdP blend.

  • 1995 Husch Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino

Dark crimson core with brick rim; weedy, green pepper, cigar box, red currants, compost, poblano, brick dust; lighter feel to this, good texture, a graininess, mid palate filled out nicely with more air; really interesting, like off vintage Bordeaux with age.

  • 2011 Round Pond Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Dark core with violet rim; tar, charcoal, violets, slight candied plum, berry with a green edge, still some freshness but inky, alcohol and oak on the finish, glycerin, very Syrah-like, blackberry and vanilla with grainy tannin.

  • 2015 Lingua Franca Pinot Noir Tongue 'n Cheek

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Pretty ruby maroon, see through, pale rim; new, fresh and floral nose, savory edge, whole cluster done so well, juicy, sweetened fruit juice character, very savory and tart, Burgundian, touch of blueberry and mineral, drinking well now but still very young; called it!

  • 2007 Ridge Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Darker core with lighter garnet rim; strong and luxurious oak with Cabernet notes, some herb, licorice, stewed plum and earth notes, dense Cab, fine plush tannins, dark fruit showing good power, nice acid, earth, mushroom, oak less prominent on the palate, sweet finish, leather, complex, aged really well with more life ahead of it, very Bordeaux like.

  • 2014 Robert Keenan Winery Cabernet Franc Spring Mountain District

USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District

Dark core with garnet rim; slight reduced, grapey, plum, nori green edge, cobblery sweet dark fruit, touch of violets, insulin inducing ripeness, dark cooked fruit, VA, in an awkward stage to put it gently.

  • 2017 Kelley Fox Wines Pinot Noir Coury Clone Hyland Vineyard

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, McMinnville

Very pale ruby; super fresh nose, juicy, candied, floral, cinnamon, clove, exuberant acid that is beautifully tied to the fruit, sappiness comes on strong, popping red currant and cranberry that gets more plum wild strawberry and cherry with air; very nice potential in the next couple years, this was overshadowed by the Lingua Franca but after another 1.5 hours this was speeding by it and the LF was getting sluggish; brilliant stuff! stocking up on this.

  • 2012 Carlisle Syrah Papa's Block

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Completely opaque, thin maroon rim; dark fruit, sweat, tar, smoke, bacon fat, Syrah, black plum, pit, boquet garni, menthol, heavyweight with decent acid; really like complexity but a bit of a brute; called Dumol Syrah.

  • 2008 Paul Lato Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

Dark core with violet rim; glycerin, tar, minty, candied violets, green, smoked meat, touch of bacon fat, bitter chocolate, less sweet than the nose suggests, ripe and spicy, young and sweet sappy richness, really reminded me of Guigal.

Flight 2 - Bonus Wine (1 Note)

Because younger CdP fits into more of a New World tasting anyway, right?
