Introduction

The fourth edition of my “winter tasting”, attended by Derk, Janneke, David, Ard, Steven, Cees, Kees, Dimitri, Frank, Sjaak, David, David, Barry, Lendl, Elizabeth and me. All wines tasted from the appropriate Riedel Veritas glasses, thanks to the excellent hospitality of Winebar 4850. The Halenbergs were opened on the morning of the tasting and not decanted. The Chevalier Rouge was double decanted on the morning of the tasting, with the exception of the 2002 and 2007, which were not decanted. The Chevalier Blanc was opened on the morning of the tasting and not decanted, with the exception of the 2009 and 2010. Clos des Réas was double decanted on the morning of the tasting, the dessert wines were not decanted.

Flight 1 - Emrich-schonleber Monzinger Halenberg GG vertical 2005-2018 (14 Notes)

Flight 2 - Domaine de Chevalier Rouge vertical 2000-2010 (11 Notes)

  • 2000 Domaine de Chevalier 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Wonderfully mature and elegant, flowing, crushed red berries, gentle tannins, mature, good length.

  • 2001 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Magnum, direct from the Château. Very slightly corked, but the taint got worse very quickly in the glass. Hard to assess, but potentially greater than the 2000, more power and energy. Should merit 93, but not rated.

  • 2002 Domaine de Chevalier 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Light and delicate style, juicy fruit, not generous but classical, slightly green, fresh, light tannins, relatively light and short finish. Drink up.

  • 2003 Domaine de Chevalier 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Direct from the Château. Firm but ripe tannins, warm fruit but nothing jammy or overripe, a very well made wine in this challenging vintage. Drinking beautifully.

  • 2004 Domaine de Chevalier 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Direct from the Château. Slightly green, a bit austere, minerally and fresh, slender, nothing off but needs food.

  • 2005 Domaine de Chevalier 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Beautifully complete and harmonious, everything in place, still a bit firm in the tannins. Needs more time, great future.

  • 2006 Domaine de Chevalier 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Energetic and fresh, more tannic and sturdy than the 2005, but the fruit is there and it is not rough. A very successful 2006.

  • 2007 Domaine de Chevalier 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Juicy and with firm tannins, perfectly extracted, does not have the usual 2007 “hole in the middle“, complete and quite firm for a 2007. Drinking beautifully now and with some time in hand.

  • 2008 Domaine de Chevalier 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Very energetic, feels almost completely closed, very young, tough but also just a bit green, not sure about its potential. I think the jury is still out for the 2008 vintage, and that applies to this Chevalier too.

  • 2009 Domaine de Chevalier 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

So juicy and rich and structured and elegant and delicious, so complete and expressive, a “full organ” wine, seductive in spite of huge tannic power.

  • 2010 Domaine de Chevalier 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Powerful and structured, monumental, a great wine, quite phenomenal, pure and precise, fresh fruit, more intellectual than the sexy 2009, needs time but will reach great heights. Clearly a 40-50 year wine, revisit in 2025.
