Introduction
The fourth edition of my “winter tasting”, attended by Derk, Janneke, David, Ard, Steven, Cees, Kees, Dimitri, Frank, Sjaak, David, David, Barry, Lendl, Elizabeth and me. All wines tasted from the appropriate Riedel Veritas glasses, thanks to the excellent hospitality of Winebar 4850. The Halenbergs were opened on the morning of the tasting and not decanted. The Chevalier Rouge was double decanted on the morning of the tasting, with the exception of the 2002 and 2007, which were not decanted. The Chevalier Blanc was opened on the morning of the tasting and not decanted, with the exception of the 2009 and 2010. Clos des Réas was double decanted on the morning of the tasting, the dessert wines were not decanted.
2018 Emrich-Schönleber Halenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs 94 Points

Wonderful interplay of ripe fruit and minerally freshness, youthful, floral, peach, hint of tropical fruit, elegant, smoky slate, very expressive, juicy and supple, beautifully integrated firm acidity, salty, lovely now, great future.

2017 Emrich-Schönleber Halenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs 92 Points

Much more focused on smoky minerality than on fruit, red fruit on the nose, quite tight on the palate, slightly herbaceous, has a hard time sandwiched between the 2018 and 2016, but still a good wine.

2016 Emrich-Schönleber Halenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs 94 Points

Marries finesse with power and drive, precise and concentrated, very salty minerality, grapefruit bitters, beautiful fruit salad, excellent length, more intellectual than the hedonistic 2018 but of similar quality.

Classical nose, bright acidity especially for such a warm vintage, aromatically slightly one-dimensional right now, but has lots of power and structure, and a good stuffing of ripe fruit, will last. Good future.

Playful, juicy grapefruit, hint of honey on the nose, dances across the palate, salty minerality, lip-licking acidity, lemon-oil, very long. Extremely charming.

Not as complex as some other vintages, slightly monolithic, a bit unyielding, like most other participants today I found it difficult to put my finger on it.

Reflects its warm vintage, was spectacular in youth, but lacks structure and freshness now, a bit flabby, with a slightly warm finish.

Direct from the estate. Warm vintage, ripe and rounded, reminiscent of the 2011, lacks a bit of aroma and the typical minerally energy of the vineyard.

Classical style, complete, subtle, elderflower, flowing, perfect balance and weight, still fresh, aromatically a bit discreet, not as expressive as the 2007.
