Introduction

Big Bordeaux 2010 2-day horizontal hosted by a private collector. My 3 main takeaways from the vintage were 1) more frequent perception of heat, 2) a slightly stronger left bank and a less consistent right bank, 3) while in general it is still too early to pop the 2010s, wine selection is key as some appear to be in decline already, especially on the right bank. The top wines were Mouton (99), Margaux (98) and VCC (98). The biggest positive surprise was Clos Manou (95). Biggest disappointment was Pape Clement (86). More details and complete tasting overview included in the tasting story.

In terms of mechanics the wines were presented in flights of four, tasted blind and then discussed and revealed before moving to the next flight with approx. 15 min per flight. A number of Easter eggs were also included (Opus One, Tenuta Nuova, Electus).

Comparing the 2010 to the 2009 made it clear that 10 years on both vintages are still great overall no doubt, but probably did not entirely live up to expectations. The big names tended to perform spectacularly, but many of the mid-field and value names struggle to integrate tannins into the fabric, could shake off unwanted features such as over-extraction (2009) or heat (2010) or already came across as past their peak (more 2009 than 2010).

Comparing averages scores 2010 yielded 92.6, slightly below 2009 93.1 although admittedly the 2009 sample was slightly stronger. In terms of appellations the strongest were Paulliac and Pomerol with 95+ on average – helped obviously by the big guns included in them (Mouton, Lafite, Latour in Paulliac; VCC, Le Pin, Petrus, Lafleur among others in Pomerol). Unsurprisingly the weakest group was Other Bordaux (Listrac, Castillon etc) with an average score of 90.9. Among the big appellations Péssac (Haut-Brion, La Mission) and St Emilion failed to convince.

  • 2010 Château Fonréaud 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Listrac-Médoc

    (6/21/2020)

Big Bordeaux 2010 2-day horizontal hosted by a private collector. My 3 main takeaways from the vintage were 1) more frequent perception of heat, 2) a slightly stronger left bank and a less consistent right bank, 3) while in general it is still too early to pop the 2010s, wine selection is key as some appear to be in decline already, especially on the right bank. More details and complete tasting overview included in the tasting story.

    Tasting notes:
Dark fruit profile with dried herbs, bitter chocolate and spice. Fresh palate with more blue fruit, tannin with a firm grip but in good balance overall. Not a name I was familiar with but for a Listrac this is clearly punching above the Cru Bourgeois waist line.

    Tasting notes:
Red and dark cherry presented in a ripe fashion, some roasted coffee beans, dried herbs of thyme and rosemary. Intense palate with lots of tension, but a finish gets cut short and only. Mouth-coating tannin remain. A simple but well-made St Estèphe and appeared to perform as you would expect.

  • 2010 La Dame de Montrose 92 Points

    Tasting notes:
Plush nose showing ripe dark cherry and blue berries with some leathery notes attached. Concentrated palate although not in ideal balance. This was a strong second wine and really only 1 notch below the Montrose. Rather low scores by me here as it will take quite a number of years for this to integrate – albeit not quite as long as for the Montrose.

    Tasting notes:
Facetted nose of roasted coffee, mixed berries. Beautifully polished palate despite plenty of tannin. I am not ashamed to admit that I initially thought this was Chateau Margaux. When I proclaimed this I did not get any push-back from the crowd either. Average score in our sub-sample of 5 was 96 and I'm not far off. I do not know what this was like fresh in the bottle, but it has aged incredibly well and seems to have proven one of those rare lucky punches. Probably the biggest (positive) surprise over the 2 days. 95+

    Tasting notes:
Ripe, red cherry, liqueur but also brambleberry and blueberry framed by a bit of barnyard. A bit earthy and green herbs too. Fruity palate with an element of sweetness, tannin with grip. This was a good overall package.

    Tasting notes:
A fruit profile leaning towards dark berries, also herbaceous, forest floor and slightly leathery. Lots of fruit, tannin and acidity provide for a powerful palate with a long finish. Unfortunately there was a cork stain that was especially noticeable on the palate. Was inclined to go score this at around 95 hence a real shame.

    Tasting notes:
Ripe red and blue fruit, Williams and slightly leathery – but pretty closed at this stage. Very dense and concentrated with a bodybuilding type of structure and a palate awash with mouth-coating tannin. This is clearly built for the very long term and may offer loads of pleasure in 30+ years, but very hard to say.

    Tasting notes:
Dark fruit profile, a bit herbaceous and slightly savory. Fruity and powerful palate. This was clearly more accessible than most, rather simple but in a good spot and not without appeal.

    Tasting notes:
Unfortunately another corked bottle. Nose otherwise slightly restrained and closed. Mixed dark, blue and red berries, in the background dried herbs and marginally earthy flavours. A juicy palate but with an abrupt finish. A bit of heat. Trying to ignore the cork stain this could have been another strong wine from Margaux.

    Tasting notes:
Signature complex and refined Margaux nose of roasted coffee beans and detailed red berry aromas. Great tension within soft and velvety fabric. But cannot hide some heat unfortunately which is the only reason I‘m not going even higher. Otherwise liked it even more than in a recent Margaux vertical (2003-2015) where the 2010 was only bested by the 2009. A stunner combining sexy appeal with elegance and noblesse. In this horizontal on a par with VCC and on the left bank second only to Mouton which is just killing it on all fronts.

    Tasting notes:
Fruit forward cherry nose, liqueur, green herbal and mineral notes. Fresh and vibrant palate with lots of fruit, although also astringent at this stage. This experience was a notch below my last tasting but the potential remains evident and a proper decant would no doubt have helped a lot.

    Tasting notes:
Ripe, rather dark fruit with additional herbal and earthy notes. Polished and plush palate with great balance and harmony. This brief note does clearly not do this justice. The 2010 Baron is a really, really good wine and quite successfully fighting for a spot in the sun next to the first growths.

    Tasting notes:
Intense and layered nose of cassis, scorched earth and a bit of leather and beautiful toast flavours. A round, deeply concentrated palate with lots of fruit, cigar box and a finish that goes on and on. Outstanding and without much hesitation I can safely say this is the wine of the vintage for me.

    Tasting notes:
One of the Easter eggs planted in this Bordeaux 2010 horizontal. This crowd of Bordeaux fanatics visibly struggled with the sweetness, but the faction of Napa accustomed wine enthusiasts, including yours truly, loved it. Slightly green, minty herbal notes with a more red type of fruit (red currant). Incredible complexity on the palate with fresh fruit, spices and savory notes, a velvety texture and a sweet finish. Very string, although not quite at the 2012 level which remains one of my favourites.

Slightly closed nose with mixed blue and dark berries, a bit of spices and faint minty notes. Juicy and fruity palate yielding lots of pleasure already with great balance, tension and a medium+ finish. Early days but very promising and could have potentially shined more were it not in a flight with Mouton and Latour.

    Tasting notes:
Elegant and sexy nose with enticing sweetness, some tobacco, some herbaceous notes. A greatly structured palate with lots of fruit in perfect harmony with the texture, acidity and tannin. For me a strong #3 on the left bank.

    Tasting notes:
Black cassis, a bit liqueur-like, some heat on the palate, dense but in a heavy-handed way and not very exciting overall. Should also mention that in the few minutes we could follow this in the glass this was already improving in great strides - but didn’t come close to greatness. La Mission and Haut Brion were my low light among the two wines on the left bank. Interestingly noticeable alcohol was already an issue with the 2009. Maybe just much more bottle aging required here, but I am not entirely convinced that this will do the trick.

    Tasting notes:
Rather restrained and closed and hard to find anything beyond dark cherry and a bit of fresh herbs. On the palate concentrated and fruit forward palate. Along with La Mission this was one of the negative surprises among the big names on the left bank. The 2009 you could elevate to greatness by a good, long decant and aeration in the glass. But hard to imagine this will be a match for the simply magnificent 2016. 90 for now, although I realize this could be much higher in a more favorable setting.

    Tasting notes:
Alcoholic nose with over-ripe, jammy and fruit. A heavy palate with plenty of mouth-coating tannin and little joy. Apart from the few corked bottles and a handful of oxidizing wines on the right bank this was the largest disappointment for me. Over-extracted and ridiculous oak deployment were in no way worthy of such a classic estate.

    Tasting notes:
The signature green, herbal notes surrounding a rather dark fruit lead you to suspect SHL even in a blind tasting context. Intense palate but lacking refinement with an acidic overhang. I am generally a big fan of the estate and most vintages, but the 2010 didn't felt quite up to the game when compared to a phenomenal 2009 or more recent vintages such as 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018.

    Tasting note:
Black cherry, some distraction from heat, and with imagination some herbal elements. In all rather simple with a tannic palate. Having said, I did notice some quick improvement with some aeration. I didn't have the impression that much changed here over the last 2 years when I last tasted. Best to continue cellaring for easily 3-5 more years.

Amazingly complex notes of roasted coffee bean, espresso, dark cherry, cassis, dried herbs and mineral notes. Layered palate with lots of pleasurable fruit. While still heavy on tannin, the structure to absorb this over time was no doubt there.

  • 2010 Château Luchey-Halde 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (6/21/2020)

    Tasting note:
Dark berries and dark barnyard aromatics. A nice nose overall, but heavy-handed palate and balance less than ideal.

    Tasting note:
Red cherry and darker berries, otherwise closed and restrained, not showing much complexity. Was hoping for more from this. 10 years on the 2009 was both in a better shape and more accessible.

    Tasting note:
Fruit forward with green herbal notes. Fresh and bright, mostly red fruit on the palate, but with a ton of tannin. Given the price tag for the 2010 I think best to chase ready-to-drink vintages like 1996 (retails at the same price) or more recent vintages where I particularly like the 2018.

Red, ripe berries, a slightly chemical touch (not in a bad way), ripe and slightly jammy also on the palate showing additional aroma layers. Tangible tannin but in good balance. A good wine that benefited from accessibility and being in a more expressive stage than other - but nothing more.

    Tasting note:
Ripe blueberries, herbal with a minty touch, forest floor. Mostly juicy palate, but drying tannin and not yet accessible. First time I had the 2010 but I from this brief impression I can safely say I much prefer more recent vintages (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018). Comparing this to the 2009 10 years on, the 2009 appeared more accessible.

    Tasting note:
Pretty closed nose showing blue and even more rather dark berries along with some herbal complexity. The nose is deep and concentrated and, despite tangible tannin, the mouthfeel is already round and silky. A good and surprisingly accessible Las Cases, but not overly complex and not one of my favourites.

    Tasting note:
A rather intense nose of ripe cherry and raspberry, but hard to find much beyond a lot of extraction. A very fruit focused palate results with mouth-coating tannin. In short: muscular but lacking refinement. For me personally Poyferré tends to be the weakest of the 3 Léoville's although I have to admit the 2018 barrel sample was quite amazing!

An Easter egg planted in this Bordeaux horizontal. Light yet full of scents, perfume and floral notes, some sweetness, fine herbs. Juicy and absolutely fantastic palate with fresh red fruit, firm structure yet light. This found pretty skeptical reception from the crowd obviously being a very different beast from the rest. But in my view this was fabulous and easily the best Sangiovese I ever had.

A bit of black coffee, scorched earth, great bouquet of mixed berries, blue, red and dark. Lots of structural tannin, but otherwise a soft and velvety palate. Rather short on the finish however, in my view. Complexity continued to build with aeration and I think this may evolve into a spectacular wine if you're patient and give it another 5+ years.

    Tasting note:
Leathery with a bit of barnyard. In terms of fruit profile rather dark in character but met by bright, ripe red fruit on the palate. Not utterly harmonious yet, however. Having said that, adding layer after layer by the minute and a much more promising experience than the 2009 10 years on.

A polished, ripe and fruity nose with dried herbs, tobacco, green herbs and even some peppery spices in the surroundings. Lacking integration on the palate and will need quite some time.

Beautifully toasted, cigar box type of oak, some licorice and a ripe, raspberry type of fruit. This refined, delineated nose unfortunately couldn't entirely be transported to the palate.

    Tasting note:
Sexy red fruit, spices, herbal complexity with ultra-fine oak. Juicy palate, finish could be a bit longer but otherwise already in great harmony. Once again a fantastic VCC vintage and up there with 2001, 2009, 2015 (of the ones I tasted) and along with Margaux a runner-up to Mouton in this tasting and #1 on the right bank.

Ripe, plush and polished nose, sweet and a bit liqueur-like. There is herbal and secondary complexity to it, but overall slightly over-extracted I found.

A bit clumsy fruit profile and a few early secondary aromatics. Acidic imbalance on the palate which coupled with lots of mouth-coating tannin was a challenge.

  • 2015 Château Rieussec 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    (6/22/2020)

Refreshingly fresh for a Sauternes. Quince and only marginally candid fruit, spicy, green gooseberry and fresh garrigue, green herbs and some chemical petrol notes. Creamy, viscous palate with lots of freshness. A lot of tension and intnesity. A great Sauternes with lots of potential so my suggestion is to resist the temptation of popping a bottle. Ended up losing in a direct face-off against Lafaury-Peyraguey 96 which has aged incredibly well. If you have the option, start drinking the 2001 now.

An Easter egg planted in this horizontal. Light, red fruit profile followed by a very fruit forward palate that was not only simple, but really bad with way too much tannin and acidity and everything just entirely at the wrong place.

Candid apricot, lots of honey, green spices and herbs. Viscous with much more honey and spices on the palate. A great Rieussec not only in a good spot already but likely to improve further. Reminds me a lot of the 2015.

Surprisingly fresh with green herbs, candid fruit, apricot and decent freshness. A more interesting nose than the Rieussec 2015 next to it, but loses on intensity and overall push.
