France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Dense black fruit with meaty and earthy character, showingimpressive density. Slightly less fresh than another bottle from a few months ago, but still very tasty.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Densely packed and structured black fruit with so much power, still on the firm side. No fear of fading anytime soon, probably further upside from here.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Dense and meaty with lots of black fruit and roasted meat, everything in wonderful harmony, just less complex than the 1er Crus in the flight. But the most enjoyable tonight.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
In 01-05 vertical. Certainly good, but my least favorite. As much earth as mature black and red cherry with some pronounced new oak still coming through. Time to drink up.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
In 01-05 vertical. Black and red cherry, clearly with bloody, roasted meat, even if just medium+ weight. I found an intriguing umami, mushroom character here as well. This was a more divisive wine than most, and I liked it more than most, even while wishing for more Grand Cru density and a bit less new oak treatment.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
In 01-05 vertical, then finished alongside ‘03 Beze. Clearly ripe, but with so much heft and concentration that it’s clearly well balanced, finishing nicely bright and fresh for an ‘03. All black fruit with dark chocolate, braised meat with savory spice and lots of heft. A great success for the vintage, and a wine that surely hold well for another decade+.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
In 01-05 vertical. Served single blind, did anybody think this 2004? Nothing green, bitter, or even underripe. Black and red cherry with meaty character start-to-finish, fresher when first tasted (open two hours), more like slowly braised meat When finished a few hours later. Great for the vintage.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
In 01-05 vertical. Clearly the biggest of the vertical, yet surprisingly balanced and accessible for a 2005 Grand Cru. Dense, ripe and well structured, but fruit and structure seem well aligned. Only opened 3 hours before tasting, more air would have helped since this was bigger and better when finished another couple of hours later.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
The rare 2003 that keeps getting better with more cellar time. Roasted meat with intense concentration, all well supported with elegant tannins and clearly enough acidity. Very good length with excellent balance and persistence. If served blind, I would have thought 2002, maybe even 1999. Even better when finished 8 hours after opened. A great wine now, with some possible further upside.
