France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Mineral, Gevrey animale, subtle oak, lifted shoe polish nose. Very classy palate with sui generis Gevrey character, touch watery on the midpalate but very long. Really pretty light, lacy texture. A beautiful wine and a real surprise given the producer's reputation for overdone wood. My favorite wine of the tasting.
This hits immediately, with a strikingly pretty earthy, moist humus nose, toasted espresso notes and a touch of reduction. Juicy palate with red fruit, good acids and midpalate intensity. Very approachable now and showing nice complexity already.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
More opaque nose, showing some wood, soft red fruits, light floral and spice notes. Palate is lean and a bit soft with an oddly developed character. Almost watery. Not a good showing at all, not sure if this was an off bottle or just closed.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Tight nose. Palate initially a bit confected and oaky, with somewhat aggressive, astringent tannins. Improves with air, developing a more savory character, but still a pass for me.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Spicy, light red fruit. Initially lovely in the mouth with light, lively spicy red fruit, but then there's a distracting metallic note on the back, perhaps brettanomyces. Finely textured for Nuits with just some light astringence on the back. Very attractive but for the metallic finish.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Powerfully floral, honeysuckle, light honey and nougat oak nose. Medium acid and body on the palate with some oak tannin and a bit of lingering sweetness. Moderately tasty but overly heavy and sweet. I think this would be tiring to drink more than a glass of.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Very floral, sophisticated nose. Mouthfilling mineral and floral palate with some tangerine rind and a brush of oak tannin. Serious and very tasty but I didn't completely flip for it; it likely just needs time.
