Introduction

At the peak of Covid last year, six of us decided to buy a few bottles from Jailbreak’s wine list hoping to hold a wine dinner when things get back to semi-normal. It may be difficult to believe but Jailbreak has the best wine list in DMV by a big margin. It also has a great whiskey program as well. When Justin B does things, it always seems to go over the top. Six of us plus Justin were situated in the outdoor tent. The chef prepares three delicious courses. It was interesting to taste the 14 Rousseaus and 14 DRCs side by side.

Flight 1 - White Burgundy (4 Notes)

The 18 Dauvissats were very nice, not showing the 18 ripe fruit.

  • 2017 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Very focused nose displaying coiled yellow citrus fruit, lemon, apple, pine needle, rain water and wet stone. Very good concentration, coiled yellow fruit, excellent precision and focus, bright acidity, strong mineral and a medium to long coiled yellow fruit driven finish with wet stone at the end. This is a classic mineral driven Dauvissat Chablis.

  • 2018 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Expressive nose displaying ripe yet pure white fruit, pear, apple, honeysuckle, sweet spices and mineral. The honeysuckle note reminds me Raveneau a bit. Excellent concentration, nicely layered concentrated white fruit, rich and generous, nice balance and precision, medium acidity and subtle mineral, and a long ripe white fruit driven finish with a hint of honeysuckle at the end. This shows less mineral than the peruses served next. Really nice showing, more like Raveneau than Dauvissat.

  • 2018 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe yellow fruit, lemon curd, honey, beeswax, sweet spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, layer upon layers of concentrated yellow fruit, rich and oily but also excellent balance and precision, bright acidity and strong limestone mineral, and a long generous yellow fruit driven finish with honey at the end. This is more like Les Clos than the Les Clos, more mineral and precise. Really enjoyable already.

  • 2016 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Expressive nose displaying ripe yet cool concentrated yellow and white fruit, apple, lemon curd, a hint of oak, honey and wet stone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered concentrated yellow and white fruit, rich but also showing strong mineral, bright acidity and a long dense yellow fruit driven finish with honey and a hint of oak at the end. This is a big scale, dense and deeply tone wine.

Flight 2 - White Burgundy Blind (2 Notes)

The 18 Jadot Bouzeron showed really well. I was disappointed by the Roulot.

  • 2018 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Luchets 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Tasted blind. Not terribly expressive hollow nose, white fruit, pear and apple, rain water and mineral. Medium concentration, cool but angular, a hint of spritz, good acidity and mineral, and a medium long cool white fruit driven finish. The spritzy is a bit bothersome and lessens the fruit expression. I actually prefer the Jadot aligote, disappointing in lieu of the price.

  • 2018 Louis Jadot Bouzeron Domaine Gagey 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Bouzeron

Tasted blind, expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe succulent yellow fruit, peach, apple, lemon curd, steel, sweet spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, nicely layered opulent yellow fruit, rich but nicely balanced, bright acidity and mineral, and a long concentrated yellow fruit driven finish. Everyone except Jeff W prefers this and guesses it to be the expensive one.

Flight 3 - Red Burgundy Blind (2 Notes)

The small wine prevalied once again!

  • 2017 Cecile Tremblay Morey St. Denis Tres Girard 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

Tasted blind, medium expressive nose displaying subtle black fruit, stem and earth. Medium concentration, a bit angular and hollow, medium acidity, earthy mineral and a medium long subtle black fruit driven finish. My guess is a minor producer's village to 1er crus Burgundy.

  • 2019 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Tasted blind, expressive floral nose displaying perfectly ripe generous black fruit, blackberry, a hint of black cherry, rose, mocha, sweet spices and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of perfectly ripe black fruit, rich and generous, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with rose at the end. Just about everyone prefers this to the MSD. Excellent showing, really delicious.

Flight 4 - 2014 Rousseau (3 Notes)

There seemed more youthful than the 14 DRCs. The first nose of the 12 Rousseau was perfect, incredibly texture as well. My WOTN.

  • 2014 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Expressive nose displaying cool blue fruit, blueberry and blackberry, a hint of licorice, lavender, iron, spicy spices and earth. Very good concentration, finely layered cool blue fruit, very precise and fluid, medium acidity and earthy mineral, and a long cool blue fruit driven finish with lavender at the end. Both of the 14 Rousseauss seem more youthful and primary than the 14 DRCs. This is very similar to the 14 Chambertin but not as refined.

  • 2014 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Sensual nose displaying perfectly ripe pure black fruit, crushed blackberry and black cherry, rose, strangely a hint of stem, ink, spicy spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, incredibly layered, elegant and weightless without losing intensity, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long pure black fruit driven nose with rose and ink at the end. Although very youthful, the pure fruit and weightless palate make it very enjoyable already.

  • 2012 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 99 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Incredibly hedonistic noes displaying perfectly ripe rich red fruit, strawberry, a hint of cherry pie, sap, noticeable sous bois adding complexity, a hint of toasted oak/sesame, spicy spices, and earth. Beautifully integrated palate, layers upon layers of rich red fruit, rich yet fluid, excellent balance, beautifully detailed, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long generous rich red fruit driven finish with a hint of sesame and sap at the end. I am surprised by the strong sous bois development, not that I am complaining. Despite less than a decade old, this is drinking incredibly well. My WOTN.

Flight 5 - 2014 DRC (3 Notes)

The 14s are developing faster than I anticipated. I really love the purity in the 14 Burgundy, both reds and whites. The style is similar to the 08 but more consistent in quality and a bit more concentrated.

  • 2014 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Corton Domaine Prince Florent de Merode 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

A classic DRC nose displaying decadent red fruit, strawberry, strawberry candy, smoke, a slight hint of sous bois, Asian spice, stem, iron, light caramel, cinnamon, sweet spices and earth. Already showing beautifully integrated palate, very finely layered decadent yet pre red fruit, fluid and silky, very precise and beautifully balanced, perfect amount of acidity and earthy mineral, and a long decadent red fruit driven finish with Asian spices and stem at the end. I am surprised by the classic DRC expression. This particular bottle is very expressive. This is already very enjoyable.

  • 2014 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Another classic DRC nose but with black and blue fruit, blackberry, black cherry, blueberry soda, mocha, stem, sap, Asian spices, caramel and earth. Already showing perfectly integrated palate, layers upon layers of decadent yet pure black and blue fruit, exceptional balance and harmony, soft and gentle, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long decadent black fruit driven finish with stem and Asian spices at the end. This is the softest and least concentrated wine of the flight. Drinking really well.

  • 2014 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Medium expressive nose displaying concentrated black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, black cherry, raspberry, a hint of stem, strong Asian spices, sous bois, sap, cinnamon, caramel and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of rich concentrated black fruit, rich yet pure and beautifully balanced, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long concentrated black fruit driven finish with a hint of stem at the end. This is the most concentrated wine of the flight. I am surprised by the sous bois note. A great future ahead.
