Introduction

Our 10(?) time at Die Forelle, an amazing family run hotel with super food and an amazing wine list. The wine list is 30+ pages with only Austrian wine! Moreover, a lot of aged wines as well on the list with all the well known wineries (Pichler, Prager, Gobelsburg, Hirtzberger, Brundlmayer) and much more

Flight 1 - Wines with the daily 5 course dinner (12 Notes)

  • 2019 Franz Hirtzberger Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Honivogl 94 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    (1/23/2022)

A truly amazing GV (especially in this youthful stage); deep without being heavy, full while being elegant. Pear, fresh yellow apple, melon, mango and a finish that goes on for minutes!

Just imagine how this will be in 10-20 years time!

  • 2017 Machherndl Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Kollmitz 92 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    (1/22/2022)

Lovely ‘big’ GV from the 30 page Austrian only winelist in our yearly hotel at the Weissensee. Ripe and exotic and stone fruit (mango, peach), saffron, honey, white pepper. Long finish

  • 2017 Gerhard Markowitsch 1ÖTW Rosenberg 90 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Carnuntum

    (1/23/2022)

Long, deep cherries, cranberry, red currant, at day 2 a funky barnyard smell that blew off. Quite a bit of oak

  • 2012 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling 1ÖTW Alte Reben Reserve Ried Heiligenstein 91 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

    (1/23/2022)

Medium to full bodied riesling that shows some lovely aging; quite a bit of petrol, apple sauce, white peach, minerality on the nose. On the palate citrus, pear, peach and apricot. Long apricot finish

  • 2019 Jaunegg Weissburgunder Eichberg 87 Points

    Austria, Styria, Südsteiermark

    (1/24/2022)

Rather indistinct Weissburgunder; a bit of citrus, honeysuckle and a slight saline finish. Most WB from Austria I kinda like, but this reminded me of mass production PB from Italy

  • 2013 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 'M' 93 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    (1/28/2022)

Great smaragd GV, living up to its reputation: Ripe, big, but not heavy. Has aged nicely. On the nose apricot, peach, honey, pineapple, even papaya. Probably botrytis on some of the grapes. On the palate a full, almost oily mouthfeel with the same aroma’s. Very long apricot and honey finish. Great how these top GV can age. My only wish would have been a bit more acidity (now medium to medium+)

  • 2015 Ernst Triebaumer Blaufränkisch Oberer Wald 90 Points

    Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee-Hügelland

    (1/27/2022)

Blaufrankisch from 70 year old vines. Cherries, cranberry, blackberry, seems as if there is even a hint of strawberry. Nicely integrated wood. Pretty pure. Long cherry, saline finish with a bitter note. Medium+ acidity, low tannins

  • 2011 Rudi Pichler Riesling Smaragd Wösendorfer Hochrain 91 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    (1/27/2022)

Very nice smaragd Riesling from Rudi Pichler, although I’d expected a bit more from this bottle. The nose is dominated by (pink) grapefruit, some petrol and further more honeysuckle, bay leaf, anise. The palate is subtle and elegant with white peach, minerality and grapefruit. Long finish, high acidity

  • 2013 Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Familienreserve 93 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal

    (1/26/2022)

Great, ripe GV that has spend 4,5 (!) years in acacia, comparable with a smaragd from Wachau. On the nose apricot, fresh ripe yellow pear, cantaloupe melon, saffron, a bit of dough and some botrytis. On the palate pear, white peach, cantaloupe melon, quite creamy. Medium+ acidity and long finish
    92/93

  • 2015 Weingut Josef Pöckl Reve de Jeunesse 92 Points

    Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee

    (1/26/2022)

Deep and warm are the two words for me to describe this wine. A blend from 50% merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Zweigelt and 10% Syrah, has spent 20 months in 100% new barriques. On the nose eucalyptus/mint, kirsch, plum, dates, licorice. Comparable on the palate with less eucalyptus and more cherry and kirsch. Long sweet cherry finish. Nicely integrated medium+ tannins. Medium acidity

  • 2006 Tement Sauvignon Blanc Grosse Lage STK Zieregg 92 Points

    Austria, Styria, Südsteiermark

    (1/24/2022)

Only the second really aged SB I had (the other a Cotat from 2006) and this one felt still much younger and not as dramatically different than I expected. Quite complex, although a bit too much dominated by grapefruit aroma’s, furthermore chamomile tea, some grass notes, mint, fresh green apple, minerality/flinty notes, cumin and herbs. Long finish with high acidity
    Difficult to judge, 91-93?

Great GV auslese: peach, mango, overripe citrus, a hint of honey. Superlong finish
