Introduction

In order to extend the pleasure that I experience with this producer I spread this tasting over a couple of weeks.

Flight 1 - Oldest whites (2 Notes)

these two were properly mature...the 84 was stunning (standard only good old bottles qualifier applies)

  • 1980 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (2/23/2022)

From Coravin. Signs of weeping under the cork, fill is at base of neck. Medium minus intensity aromas of honey but also a little vegetal note over wet stone, green citrus; touch of lime and green capsicum. With time the mineral note grows and is joined by a little biscuit. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity shot through with lime backed by cream, herbs and that minerality. Faded but still showing some life. Long. Okay.

  • 1984 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (2/23/2022)

From Coravin. Aromas of cream, honey, butter, sweet spice, green apple with a smidge of bruised apple in support, a little cheesy lees. with time the oxidative note grows. Honeyed and rich but with sufficient acidity to keep things clean. A little front of mouth grip and a smidge of bitterness on the long finish lends further interest. Engaging and rather lovely.

Flight 2 - Middle aged whites (2 Notes)

Loving the lanolin on both of these - the 2002 is probably the pick

  • 2001 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (2/23/2022)

From Coravin. Lanolin and wet sheep initially, savoury and meaty, with time and agitation a little lime, green apple backed by a touch of cream and honey. Medium plus intensity acidity, lime and green apple, textured mid palate burr tugs at the tongue. Hmm.

  • 2002 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (2/23/2022)

From Coravin. Like the 2001 a little lanolin, lime, but also sweet spice, very slight menthol and a touch of cats pee. With time herbs and tomato leaf as well as a little honey, cream and butter. It's quite rich on the palate but still with medium plus intensity acidity, plenty of tannic grip on the mid palate and gums, lime and slight herbaceousness sit beneath this. All travel long.

  • 2010 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (3/2/2022)

From Coravin. Smells dense with polished oak, black hued fruit, a sense of power and weight, with time the fruit gains a slightly jubey quality, sweet spice, a slightly roasted note with time. It's quite dense and still a little closed on the palate, dark fruits, that slightly roasted note, plentiful controlled though persistent tannins all travel long. Time for me but great promise.

  • 2011 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (3/2/2022)

From Coravin. Wild blackcurrant, a little toasty note, cream, slight cedar, sweet spcie, a smidge of pepper here as well as some plum. Earth with time. Juicy, savoury, brambles, slight pyrazine, a little smoky note, tannins are tight but don't detract from the fruit. Long. Good, really good in fact.

  • 2012 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (3/2/2022)

From Coravin. Pretty, jubey red and black berried fruit with a touch of wet clay, sweet spice, smells quite welcoming if you can imaging such a thing. With time a smidge of pyrazine. More savoury than I remember this being; tannins are tight and drying, perhaps a little too much for the fruit and I'm picking up a tiny touch of tomato leaf on the finish. Hmm

  • 2013 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (3/2/2022)

From Coravin. Slightly savoury, meaty, a touch pyrazine and white pepper, almost a smidge of volatility, quite red fruited; red currant with a little cranberry. Slightly less red hued on the palate - it's showing a little plum, tannins are quite chalky and drying, there is an impression of wetness almost diluteness that I don't find completely displeasing. Okay.

  • 2014 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (3/2/2022)

From Coravin. Slight baked black fruits, sweet spice, a little savoury underpin. with time a smidge of almost rhubarb and the fruit gets a bit of a lozenge quality. Nice nose. And this shows quite primary on the palate; black fruits baked by red berries (a little touch of strawberry here) with drying, persistent but fine textured tannins. All in balance. Really rather pleasant. Yum.

  • 2015 Domaine de Chevalier

    (3/6/2022)

From Coravin. Ripe (but not concentrated or overripe) pretty red and black cherry and berry, a little blackcurrant, sweet spice, cream, polished oak. Very pretty nose. Wow, balanced, elegant, a melange of bright red and black fruit, tannins are silky textured but persistent, all travel long, primary, stunningly good.
