Birthday celebration for a new JAX friend. Lots of great wine and company and a long afternoon but fun.
There was in addition to this a lot of white burgs but I avoided those and thus no notes.
WOTD was prob the '80 Ausone although it was a real treat to get to try the '08 Chartogne Taillet - I haven't had any from that far back.
2020 Weingut Leipold Obervolkacher Landsknecht Silvaner Alte Reben Spätlese Trocken
Germany, Franken
First time with this wine and this grape which is to the Mosel region what Aligote is to the Burgundy region - the forgotten white grape. I didn't know that there were trocken spatlese and I'd say the trocken is more dominant than the spatlese here. Very crisp style. Green apple. It's got a kindof sharpness to it which rounds a bit as it warms up. Fun to get to drink. Out of a 3L and with the most interesting type of bottle that you would never want to try to store in a normal wine storage area.

2016 Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Hors Serie
France, Champagne
Baby killing but even with that it's just so delicious and hard to keep hands off. Very fresh and flavorful and interesting and complex. May a hint of sour but in an interesting way. I enjoyed it as always.

2008 Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Blanc de Blancs Heurtebise
France, Champagne
A definite treat to get to try and one of the wines I was most excited about. This is still drinking quite young. Very bright. Lots of vanilla and a white flowers and generally just very enjoyable. Long life ahead.

1988 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Out of a magnum. This was fresh and herbal and lower fruit and more in the woodsy style. Drinking pretty well. Nice pairing with more structured seafood (e.g. shrimp and grits).

1982 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Drinking very well. Opened and decanted. This was dark and herbal and vibrant and really just straight up delicious. Glad to see we have one sitting in the cellar.

1980 Château Ausone
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Yum yum yum. I just love this producer and it never seems to matter what the year is, the wine is always good. Spices and darker dried fruits. Had been opened and decanted for sediment (very little) and then rebottled and brought to the restaurant and it was ready for business pretty much from the get go.

2008 Château Cos d'Estournel
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
It's still a bit on the young side and I'd tend to say continue to hold but it is a beautiful wine. Darker and very fresh and a bit more tannin and overall a nice well structured Bordeaux.
