Introduction

Geoffroy Choppin de Janvray kindly took us through his range, which is scheduled to be bottled next week (on the early side given the delicate nature of the vintage). Again, due to vintage conditions, he did not employ whole cluster fermentation at all this year. Geoffroy sees this as an early drinking vintage.

Flight 1 - 2021 Reds (7 Notes)

  • 2021 Albert Morot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Bataillère

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

Barrel sample. Red. Forward blueberry smell. Medium weight. Lively fruit with excellent acidity, typical Savigny briary quality, and tart finish.

  • 2021 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Cent-Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Barrel sample. Red color. Red fruit and fennel. Light and delicate on the verge of being too lean. Some brambliness like the Savigny. Length is clipped by grainy tannins. Don’t care for the balance in this wine.

  • 2021 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Toussaints

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Barrel sample. Ruby. Much more wintergreen and less upfront fruit than the Cent Vignes. Elegant and fairly supple with strong clay notes. Again framed by very good acidity more so than tannins. Probably best for early consumption.

  • 2021 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Barrel sample. Light red color. Earth and green notes on the nose. Light weight, tart, short on fruit. A citric twist and chocolatey tannins that are a bit out of proportion. Very backward. Not very appealing-somehow the tannin seems riper than the fruit.

  • 2021 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Teurons

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Barrel sample. Medium ruby core. Serious blackberry fruit on the nose. Medium weight, which is to say the biggest wine so far. Deeper, sweeter fruit with orange peel and licorice. Clingingly tannic finish. I really like this, and it seems pretty clear that it is the best, most complete wine in the range.

  • 2021 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Marconnets

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Barrel sample. Light ruby. Completely different aromatics following the Teurons-bright red fruit and menthol. Light to medium weight. Lovely mix of red fruit and clay with some citrus thrown in. Lower acidity and light tannins make for a fluid, open feel. My second favorite wine after the Teurons, but this one is for near and intermediate pleasure rather than any more serious aging.

  • 2021 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Barrel sample. Red center, lighter rim. Soil-dominated aromas. A delicate wine like the Marconnets with a similarly attractive fruit/soil interplay, citrus, and gentle tannins. Elegant and very good.

Closing

Tasting through the Morot wines is always an education in Beaune terroir, and so it was again this year. Additionally, though, this really helped me get a handle on 2021, which is not only a less ripe, higher acid vintage, but one that is going to be very variable, as the Morot line up showed.
