Burgundy 2012 against German-speaking competitors

Tasted Saturday, November 19, 2022 by gilrbo with 69 views

Introduction

All wines tasted blind - for most of the tasters they were double blind. Only the vintage was known and that they were Burgundies + 3 Swiss Pinot Noirs. The German was a surprise for all.
The flights were put together randomly.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2012 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

    Blind.
Nose: fruit and floral, with a touch of game, evolving towards licorice.
Sweet entry, with fine tannins, mineral and a touch of "sauvage". It's rich (the richest of the flight), but remains elegant, and has the most tannins.

  • 2012 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru

N: this is more closed. The fruit is there but sublimated. Very elegant. On day two it showed spices (cloves) mixed with game notes. Special and lovely.
Direct and vertical on the palate, very elegant, with fine tannins which came out only towards the end.
On day two the spices became more prominent on the palate too. Mineral and deep with very fine tannins. Very long finish on earthy notes.

  • 2012 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

N: this was also quite reserved, but was more on herbs and mineral notes.
On the palate it seemed light compared to the other two, almost simple. But it showed a lovely structure withe very fine tannins.
    Day 2:
N: cherries and blackberries, earthy and elegant, with broth and balsamic notes.
On the palate it is straight and narrow, almost austere - not lively.
Finish is slightly salty. It has substance and power, but is austere.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Nose was weird here too, with a hint of a green note.
The palate was much better, elegant and straight, but with sweet fruit and still some tannins. Not bad, but when the wine was revealed it was a disappointment.

  • 2012 Domaine Denis Bachelet Côte de Nuits Villages

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages

Different nose, a bit of candied fruit.
On the palate it is charming and indeed very enjoyable, but shows less personality than the others.
    Day 2:
Candied fruit again, but now also an underlying green note emerges, one I have found also in other vintages of Bachelet. On the palate it confirms its character as on day one: juicy and well balanced, not particularly lively or remarkable though.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Weinbau Markus Ruch Pinot Noir Hallau Chölle

    Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Schaffhausen, Hallau

This showed the fingerprint of its producer. Lively and interesting.
Towards the end of the tasting and attention was waning.

  • 2012 Thomas Studach Pinot Noir

    Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Graubünden, Malans

N: elegant red fruit, aniseed and balsamic notes. Oak, still quite a bit.
Interesting, with fine tannins, but remains a bit static.
Day two: less fruit, pine needles and oak. Juicy and with substance. The ripe fruit comes out more clearly now, almost thick. Tannins come out on the finish, but the acidity is missing.
