Introduction

First visit to this recently opened restaurant. We had a few by the glass wines.

Food was outstanding - well executed, really fulfils the brief of "fancy neighbourhood restaurant".

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • NV Philipponnat Champagne Royale Réserve Non Dosé

    France, Champagne

    (3/4/2023)

By the glass. Lovely stuff - nice acidity, a hint of fresh apple but by no means self indulgently “grower” nor indeed obviously low dosage. A thoroughly pleasing start to the proceedings.

  • 2020 Trinity Hill Syrah Gimblett Gravels

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels

    (3/4/2023)

Btg off the list. Purple colour. Good acidity and structure, and peppery youthfulness. If I owned bottles of this I’d be leaving them for a while longer - I think a more basic wine would be giving greater pleasure now.

  • 2014 Domaine Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Maranges 1er Cru

    (3/4/2023)

Btg off the list. Served in a riedel burgundy glass and the wine merited it. Colour - starting to see a little bricking. On the nose - so engaging, you could sniff for hours. Am ethereal quality, some pine needles. Red fruits. The palate almost lives up to the nose, good structure but gentle. My first 2014 I think and this showed well - readier than 13 just now I think.

A second glass took a while to open up - from a fresh bottle perhaps? No rush to drink these if you have them, but no shame to try them either.

  • 2014 Château Haut-Bages Libéral

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    (3/4/2023)

Btg off the list, coravined. This was lovely - my second favourite wine of the evening, and K’s first. Not really familiar with 2014 claret but this was decent - gentle alcohol (by modern standards…13% abv) it has some substance but neither clumsy nor plush. If I had some of these in the cellar I would be pleased.
