Introduction

An opportunity to try a selection of wines from Hawkes Bay producers

Flight 1 (18 Notes)

  • 2022 Te Mata Estate Gamay Noir

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Super clean, bright red fruits, a little earthy and ashy note, savoury whole bunch spice and a slight jubey underpin. Sourly juicy red cherry fruit with a little savoury underpin, tight tannic burr, medium length. Okay

  • 2021 Trinity Hill Chardonnay

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Buttery, ripe stone fruit over citrus, slight bacon fat, sweet spice. Juicy, savoury, slight bitterness, more citric on the palate, that butter note, a little almost reductive, slight alcohol warmth. It feels a little out of whack.

  • 2021 Bilancia Chardonnay

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Medium minus intensity aromas of bacon fat, dusty spice and earth over lemon, herbs. Sourly citric, a little green, short. Not very nice.

  • 2021 Bilancia Chardonnay Kaikora

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Struck match/bacon fat, a little farty solids note, sweet spice, polished oak, touch of citrus over stone fruit beneath this, quite citric though the fruit is muted, finishes a little short.

  • 2021 Bilancia Chardonnay Tiratore

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Initially closed but, with agitation, starts to show fresh peach. Good quality oak lends sweet spice, a little lemon. Tangy, juicy but bitter, muted fruit, quite disappointing.

  • 2017 Lauregan Wines Pinot Noir

New Zealand, North Island, East Coast

Low intensity aromas of a little red cherry, touch of sweet spice, tiny jubey note. Juicy, savoury, slightly stalky grip, a little red cherry fruit beneath this. Very slight bitterness joins the savouriness on the finish. Balanced. Nice

  • 2016 Lauregan Wines Pinot Noir Enigma

New Zealand, North Island, East Coast

Bolder than the 'estate' Pinot, cherry with a little dark berry fruit, touch of sweet spice, slightly meaty underpin, again that jubey note, a little stalks. Juicy, fleshy, savoury dark hued fruits, woody, stalky tannins close down the palate slightly but the fruit persists, there is slight bitterness on the finish. Okay but time will make things better.

  • 2019 Craggy Range Pinot Noir Single Vineyard Te Muna Road Vineyard

New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough

Rich, dark cherry and berry, a little carbo crush prettiness, plenty of good quality oak, sweet spice, quite pretty. Quite tight on the palate, fleshy rather than fresh fruit and tannins are persistent. Medium plus length. Slightly elbows at the moment. Hmm

  • 2020 Bilancia Syrah

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Meaty, savoury, slightly farty almost, dark hued fruits, have a touch of sourness, savoury spice. Juicy, fresh, flesh, acidity is mouth watering, tannins a silky burr and the fruit proves a little sour here as well. Feels a touch dilute. Hmm

  • 2020 Craggy Range Syrah Gimblett Gravels Vineyard

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels

Medium minus intensity aromas of blackberry, savoury spice, a little meaty note, touch of pepper, slightly. Creamy notes, sour and tough on the palate with aa touch of ashiness. Nah.

  • 2021 Trinity Hill Syrah

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Meaty, savoury, blackberry, smidge of pepper and an earthy underpin. Slightly sharp acidity lends a red tone to the black fruits, it's a bit of tight with a touch of alcohol warmth on the finish. Meh.

  • 2020 Bilancia Syrah la Collina

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

After all the (with a couple of exceptions) dross that has passed my nose so far this is a deeply pleasing experience. Green and pink peppercorn backed by black and blue fruits, surreptitious use of oak lends a little sweet spice. Juicy, savoury, peppered dark fruits, talc textured tannins, a little almost caraway seed, lovely.

  • 2019 Craggy Range Syrah Le Sol Gimblett Gravels Vineyard

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels

Ripe blackberry tends to plum fruit slides past compote towards the jammy, sweet spice, polished oak, cream. Juicy with silky wood based tannins which take precedence on the palate, touch of alcohol warmth, dark fruits, long but it's an awful lot of money for not quite as much fun as I would like

  • 2018 Trinity Hill Homage

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels

Aromas of black over green pepper, savoury black hued fruits, a little sweet spice and polished oak. Juicy with a slightly sour note to the black fruits, plenty of texture which is more woody than grapey, proves slightly drying and coarse flour textured, fruit persists, slight alcohol warmth. Time will help.

  • 2020 Trinity Hill The Gimblett

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels

Surprisingly meaty over savoury concentrated blackcurrant plum, sweet spice, a little polished oak. Juicy, tending to medium plus intensity acidity, spicy black fruits, concentrated without being overwrought, good quality oak, shows more on the palate, tight, slightly grainy tannins persist with the fruit helped by aa touch of alcohol warmth. Kind of nice.

  • 2018 Te Mata Estate Syrah Bullnose

Meaty, savoury, muted dark fruits, a little pepper, sweet oak spice, sour black, fruits, plentiful tannins are drying and chalky textured. Nah.

  • 2019 Te Mata Estate Cabernets / Merlot Awatea

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Pyrazine, touch of green capsicum, black currant over slight plums, touch of sweet spice, savoury underpin. Juicy, flavours translate to the palate, quite drying flour textured tannins have a slight woody note. Hmm

  • 2021 Te Mata Estate Coleraine

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

Graphite, pencil shavings, savoury black fruits; currants, plums. Polished oak is integrated and well managed offering a little sweet spice. There is a touch of jubiness to the fruit. Juicy, fleshy, fresh, blackcurrant and plum lies on a okay stave of tannic grip that is both persistent and finally grained. young, balanced, pretty good.

A lot of fun. The Bilancia La Collina was my wine of the tasting.
