Introduction

tasting various wine during Oinorama wine fair

Flight 1 (59 Notes)

  • 2005 Katogi Averoff Flogero 82 Points

    Greece, Epiros, Metsovo

(oinorama 2010) This is a blend of Merlot (80%) & Cabernet Sauvignon (20%). The color is dark cherry like but a little "tired". In the nose you get oak, fruit (sour cherry), earth. The tannins are quite forward, very aggressive (i hope theres's more to it than this). Short and alcoholic aftertaste (13,5%). Mediocre

  • 2007 Katogi Averoff Agiorgitiko 84 Points

    Greece, Peloponnisos, Nemea

(oinorama 2010) Clear cherry color, nice clean fruity nose with some sweet spices in the back. Nice palate, full round mouth, very pleasant and ready to drink as it is (it think it was meant to be like this). It will probably be good for another 2-3 years.

  • 2006 Katogi Averoff Rossiu Di Munte Syrah & Traminer 84 Points

    Greece, Epiros, Metsovo

(oinorama 2010) This Syrah & Traminer blend has spent 6 months in oak. It has a nice thick purple color. Traminer dominates the nose with ripe white-skin fruits. In the palate Traminer comes up front but then the tannins of Syrah emerge. It has a medium aftertaste. It could use another 1-2 years in the bottle but even then, I don't think it has to offer a lot.

  • 2007 Katogi Averoff Cabernet Sauvignon Rossiu di munte Giniets 85 Points

    Greece, Epiros, Metsovo

(oinorama 2010) This Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the oldest vines this estate has, it spent 14 months in oak and there were only 3,000 bottles made. It has a deep ruby color, beautiful soft and discrete nose, a bit earthy with some oak on the side The tannins are strong, the palate is a little heavy and confusing, finishes in a short aftertaste. It probably is a bit too early for it. Maybe I'll give it another try after a few years.

  • 2008 Chrisohoou Rapsani 78 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Naoussa

(oinorama 2010) This is a blend of Xinomavro, Krasato and Stavroto, it has spent 12 months in oak. Very light color, almost cherry, quite strange for Xinomavro. Very fruity in the nose with strawberries being the dominant one (probaby due to Xinomavro). In the moith , it is again too light, with only the tannins reminding that it is a red wine. Short aftertaste. Mediocre

  • 2009 Nico Lazaridi Château Nico Lazaridi 85 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Drama

(oinorama 2010) This is a blend of (65%) Sauvignon Blanc, Trebbiano (35%) and (5%) Muscat Alexandria. Very open color, almost water like. The Muscat dominates the nose, but there is also a lot of citrus. In the mouth it is "unsettled" with a short and strangely acidic aftertaste. (it was bottled 2 weeks before). Low score for now, keep an eye for it after a few months.

  • 2009 Nico Lazaridi Magiko Vouno - Magic Mountain White 85 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Drama

(oinorama 2010) This was too bottled 1 week before. It has spent 6 moths in american and french oak. Quite open color, very closed in the nose but with a definately sweet scent. This is too rather acidic in the mouth (maybe there is something wrong in this estate's white wines this year...). But, it sure needs time. Low score for now, we'll see in the future

  • 2007 Nico Lazaridi Sémillon Perpetuus White 84 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Drama

(oinorama 2010) This wine has spent 6 months in acacia casks. It has a deep straw color, very sweet aromas like honey, flowers and peach jam. The palate ruins it though. Much more acidic, tries to balance the sweetness but it fails, a lot of citrus, uneven. Pity..Have to give it another try though,

  • 2006 Nico Lazaridi Aegean Mykonos 83 Points

    Greece

(oinorama 2010) This is a blend of Syrah & Mandilaria (60%-40%) and it has spent 12 months in oak. It has a bright red color. You can smell Syrah coming out with all the spices and the berries. It tastes good too, full with round and soft tannins but finishes rather short. Good value for money with just 11€

  • 2009 Tsantali Metoxi Chromitsa White 84 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Mt. Athos

(oinorama 2010) This is a 50-50 blend of Assyrtico & Sauvignon Blanc. It is quite light colored, with flowers in the nose (due to S.Blanc probably) and much Assyrtico-like in the mouth with the typical minerality, short aftertaste. This is a nice everyday wine

  • 2009 Tsantali Kanenas White 83 Points

    Greece, Thrace

(oinorama 2010) This is a blend of Chardonnay (80%) and Muscat (20%) . It has a pale golden color, nice nose with fruits and flowers too. It has a good palate too, with fruits again and a short aftertaste. For 10 € it makes a good value for money

  • 2008 Tsantali Assyrtiko Klima Klima 86 Points

    Greece, Macedonia

(oinorama 2010) The designation on the label refers to "klima" as in climate and "klima" as in vine. This wine has a bright gold color. The nose is very strange for an Asyrtiko, with sweet aromas, honey, jam, herbs like tea and chamomile. In the palate it keeps with this strangely-sweet character. This is one great surprise !! and smells/tastes like no other Assyrtiko. Apart from that, it still is a very pleasant wine. Rating high just for the surprise they gave me!!!

  • 2008 Tsantali Metoxi Chromitsa White 83 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Mt. Athos

(oinorama 2010) This is a blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Assyrtiko and 20% Athiri. It has a light gold color, some fruits and baked bread in the nose, maybe a little dried nuts too. In the palate, a lot of acidity that is almost balanced by a sweet but short aftertaste.

  • 2008 Tsantali Kormilitsa White 86 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Mt. Athos

(oinorama 2010) This is a blend of Chardonnay and Assyrtiko (50-50). Its color is almost barley-like. Nice nose with fruits and a few herbs in the back. Its big in the mouth but with some minerality too. Even though the aftertaste is not as long as I hoped, this is a good wine,

  • 2009 Tsantali Kanenas Rosé 84 Points

    Greece, Thrace

(oinorama 2010) This is a blend of Syrah & Mavroudi (50-50). It has a medium red color and a very fruity nose with mostly cherries coming up. The mouth is equally fruity and it also has a good amount of acidity that gives the wine freshness. Rather short aftertaste.

  • 2008 Tsantali Metoxi Chromitsa 83 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Mt. Athos

It has a cherry color, the nose is simple, dull, a little earthy with a hint of fruit in the back. In the mouth it is better, the tannins are extremely soft and has a short aftertaste. A simple everyday wine.

  • 2007 Tsantali Kanenas Red 83 Points

    Greece, Thrace

(oinorama 2010) This is a blend of Mavroudi-Syrah (50-50), it spent 8 month in oak and another 4 months in the bottle. Deep ruby color, blackberries in the nose with a litte cinnamon in the back. The tannins are firm with some red fruit in the back. The aftertaste is short. This could last another 2-3 years but I'd day its far better to drink it now.

  • 2007 Alpha Estate Syrah Xelones Vineyard 84 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Amyndaio

(oinorama 2010) This is 100% Syrah from the "Helones" (greek for turtles) vineyard, It has spent 9 months in oak and another 14 in the bottle. This is a filtered version of their Syrah and you can feel it. It does possess the fruit and you can feel the peppers underneath but it lacks in texture. It is good for an everyday wine though, after all that is its purpose.

  • 2007 Alpha Estate Xinomavro Skantzoxoiros 84 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Amyndaio

(oinorama 2010) This is 100% Xinomavro from the "Skantoxoiros" (greek for hedgehog) vineyard. Its another new wine, a filtered version, that has spent 9 months in oak and 14 in the bottle. It has a deep cherry color, nice almost ethereal nose with some spices under it. This is a Xinomavro for the lighthearted, not for the hardocre funs who look for tannins. It is good though.

  • 2007 Alpha Estate Xinomavro Réserve Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Amyndaio

(oinorama 2010) This is 100% Xinomavro that has comes from 86 years old vines. It has spent 18 months in oak and another 12 in the bottle. Beautiful red color. Typical varietal aromas like sundried tomato and spices in a nice complex nose. The tannins are hard, typical for Xinomavro but they feel well made. The palate is filled with peppers, blackberries and plums with oak in the back. This is a wine to keep in your cellar. The brave could try it now I suppose after 3 hours of decant but it would be a same to open it now. This could last easily for 15 years.

  • 2007 Alpha Estate Utopia 92 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Amyndaio

(oinorama 2010) This is a new label, that will be released December 2010, or so they told me. It is made from Syrah (95%) and Xinomavro (5%), it spent 18 months in oak (9 months in new oak and then another 9 months in new oak again !!!!) (for those of you who didn't see it, it was hidden under the table). The quality of this estate along with the mystery that surrounded this label had really made me expect a lot. Happily I was not let down. The color is almost black. Warm nose with intense fruity character, all the black and red skined berries you can think of with a hint of sour cherry and plum in the back and the Xinomavro-contributed spices at the far end. The wine is still very young and you can feel it. The tannins are firm, layers upon layers of fruit but it could certainly use another 5 years in the bottle. This is a massive effort from this estate. Only time will tell how long will this last ? I put my money for 20 years. Great wine

Nice bright red color and really good in the nose with sweet spices and ripe fruits offering an overall sweet character. This keeps in the mouth, gorgeous fruit, cherry and mullberry with a medium aftertaste. This is an export-only label, so keep an eye for it. It can be drunk now but it could use another 4-5 years in the bottle.

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

(oinorama 2010) Bright colored, flowers and fruits in the nose with some vanilla. Oak is much more evident in the mouth while the acidity ruins the fruit. Uneven and mediocre.

  • 2008 Nico Lazaridi Cabernet Sauvignon Lion d'Or 82 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Drama

(oinorama 2010) Light red color, not much of a nose, with some fruits and a nice note of chocolate though. Very light in the mouth, with absolutely no tannins whatsoever and the chocolate again. Ends with a short aftertaste. This is your normal everyday cabernet and there is nothing wrong about it

  • 2007 Sigalas Mavrotragano 84 Points

    Greece, Aegean, Cyclades

(oinorama 2010) This has spent 18 months in oak. Nice bright red color with cherry hues. Complex nose with spices covering the fruit. There is a spicy character in the palate too while the tannins are firm and round. Unfortunately it ends in a rather short aftertaste. The typical Santorini high alcohol leaves you with a slight burn in the tongue.

  • 2009 Wine Art Estate Rosé 83 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Drama

(oinorama 2010) There are 5 varieties in there, Syrah, C.Sauv, Merlot, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. The result is a strawberry color wine with a nice overly fruity nose of cherries, strawberries and roses. The strawberry comes again in the palate, where you find a hint of acidity and some cherry in the end. Finishes with a short aftertaste. This is a rather pleasant rose wine, one to drink on its own or with food.

  • 2007 Wine Art Estate Touriga Nacional 86 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Drama

(oinorama 2010) Beautiful deep cherry color. Sweet perfume, some nutmeg too, berries and cherry too. The oak is evident but in a god balance with the fruit. Finishes in a nice , sweet medium aftertaste. This a very peculiar wine, the first (to my knowledge) attempt to this vairety in Greece. If you decant it, you could drink it now, but it could be good for another 5-8 years.
