Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2013 Squerryes Brut

    United Kingdom, England, Kent

Green apple - but not as aggressively so as one can find in ESW. There's a material core to it, something going on. Over time the bruised / over ripe apple character grows. Decent stuff but at £40ish - doesn't pass the Roederer Collection test.

  • 2018 Mongeard-Mugneret Chardonnay Bourgogne

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Served blind as one of a pair - similar appellation, same vintage. Deeper colour of the two, a somewhat reductive nose, and a quite boozy palate. Decent stuff. Revealed as a bourg blanc - more than decent for the appelation, but also clearly the runner up of the flight.

  • 2018 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Au Bout du Monde

France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune

Served blind. A bit more clinical on the nose. Is this a village Puligny? No - lower than villages classification. There's a tautness here, a line. This producer delivered well in '18 and at this level their wines really shine. Lovely.

  • 2020 Weingut Gebrüder Mathis Chardonnay St. Morand

    Germany, Baden

Served blind. Yellow wax capsule but bottle not broad enough to revisit the Minnow situation...thankfully. We are told it is a chardonnay. Spain? Refined Cali or Argentina? Neither new world nor spain we are told...the wine is revealed - really decent stuff. Somehow has the tropical character of boozy, oaky cali chards without the booze or the oak. Really decent stuff and I'd love to try again.

  • 2013 Mongeard-Mugneret Vosne-Romanée

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Served blind. Real sour cherry line to it. Clearly quality wine here - but give it time.

  • 2013 Domaine Gachot-Monot Nuits St. Georges Aux Crots

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

Served blind. Some line, some zip, but also a bit of breadth - a kind of non-sweet cherry coke character I associate with Tollot-Beaut. Wine of the flight for me and a little bit special - the sweet spot of villages burg where it doesn't try to beat premier cru but it has something special and unique that you can't find elsewhere.

  • 2003 Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Palates are starting to get fatigued at this stage. An 03? Really. Well put together wine. Really good stuff - no hint of 03 on this.

  • 2007 Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Such an 07 nose. I'm not sure I even know what that means but it clearly has it. The palate keeps the promises the nose makes and this is red of the night and wine of the night. Wonderful stuff and I'd love to drink one again.

  • 2011 Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Lovely stuff - showed the 11 character compared to the 07 we drank it alongside, but this is clearly a superb wine.
