Introduction

All wines were bagged and numbered and were assorted and mixed before serving to increase blind benefit.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

Flight 2 (17 Notes)

  • 2000 Miura Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Bag #1--For a wine of this age to reflect a perception to me of new wook/oak is strange. Has a punch flavor and some mineral.

  • 2005 Siduri Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Bag #2--Cloudy wine, with a funky nose. Not the barnyard type of thing but more funky, which I liked--can't describe it any differently. Sweet edges, gamey but overall, a bit too sweet in tone for me.

  • 2006 Noble Storm Pinot Noir Le Bon Climat

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

Bag #3--Never heard of nor had this wine before. Was told the winemaker also works at Curtis in SBC. Some tannin and minerality, along with some loamy cranberry. Got a brief decant before we drank it so I'll reserve judgment for now.

  • 2002 Arcadian Pinot Noir Fiddlestix Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Bag #5--Perhaps served a bit too warm? Soft fruit, cherry and some drying tannin, along with an astringent finish.

  • 2006 Ladd Cellars Pinot Noir Moore Ranch Vineyard Russian River Valley

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Bag #7--Light rose red in color. Citrus, underbrush/pine, lean to medium palate but good flavors, including watermelon, strwaberry and a hint of heat.

  • 2003 J. Rochioli Pinot Noir Special Cuvée

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Bag #8--I kept thinking to myself something was off in the nose of this wine but could not pin it down. Showed big blueberry, decent acidity and then a similar wierd note on the palate. Not a bad wine but I'm not sure I could wrap my head around it.

  • 2005 Chalone Vineyard Pinot Noir Chalone

    USA, California, Central Coast, Chalone

Bag #10--You know, this wine was pretty good. Having not bothered too much with Chalone's pinots for a few years, I liked what I had here. Vanilla and brown spice nose, with rich fruit, sweet plum, mocha and a forward style. Not gloppy or heavy has it maintains an angle of red fruited acidity that helps carry the wine. Not bad and quite tasty.

  • 2004 Porter Creek Pinot Noir Hillside Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Bag #13--Cant recall running into this winery previously, even with the # of years I have been going to RRV. Hmmm? Overall, did not care for this wine. Nose had hint of barnyard, soft fruit and lacked edges. Some wet stone and youth. Not a fan.

  • 2003 White Rose Estate Pinot Noir Nekaia

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Bag #14--Nice minerality and flavors of blue and black infused fruit. Green apple and nice finish. Had as much air time as the Ponzi Tavola and this wine here showed much better than the former.

  • 2005 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Bag #15--I liked this wine the last time I had it during our KB dinner with Michael B, and at that time thought this wine rallied with the 05 Miron for the best of the litter, as MB seemed to let the vineyard talk. Several months later, same experience again and my overall #1 of today's event. As a testament, this wine received 7 totals votes, with 6 for 1st place, and it was the second fastest bottle to drain. Citrus, toast and a hint of game. Nose shows some spice/pepper, along with blueberry and strawberry pie, with a hint of anise. The best Rosella's I have tasted to date by any producer and still killer.

  • 2005 Melville Pinot Noir Estate Verna's

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

Bag #16--I liked this wine when it came out, although at that time I recall the stemminess that showed on it. My notes don't cite that aspect today. However, when I tasted this, it caused for me an immediate reaction, like "hmmmm, this is really nice". So, I finished the pour and then went back to it again about 1/2 hour later for another pour and had the same very favorable reaction. Beautiful, with nice balance and flavor. Core of raspberry, vivid acidity, and an aromatic of rose petal--would have never guessed an SRH based wine with these perceptions. Fills the palate and finishes with some minerality. While the 05 KB Rosella's and the 06 Sea Smoke Ten seemed to overshadow this wine, this Verna's IMO is about as good as these two. Terrific.

  • 2003 Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Noir Tavola

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Bag #17--Nose veers toward barnyard, with some snappy fruit and herb. Didn't care for this too much and it didn't get much air time so maybe that had some impact, to be fair.

  • 2003 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Southing

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Bag #18--Even at this stage, shows some oak shadings on the nose, with blackberry, kiwi, some apple. A big wine says my notes, almost barrel sample like in tone, whihc surprised me given the age of the wine. As much as I feel odd saying it, needs more time to shed some fat?

  • 2006 Siduri Pinot Noir Parsons' Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Bag #19--Vibrant fruit, both blue and red in tone, along with clove and pine. Lots of new oak I felt, showing some of that 'cologne' aspect I often attach to wines that show oak early on.

  • 2006 Roar Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Bag #20--Nice round palate and initially my notes called the fruit a bit flat, with cherry and loam. However, the more I sat with the wine, the more it grew on me. Suggest giving the wine another year to see what evolves.

  • 2006 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Ten

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Bag #21--Starts off a bit loamy with some dusty tannin and then as it breathes, shows a chrunchy/crushed mix of red and black fruit, excellent balance and density with a load of flavor. There is a tremendous complexity underneath some of the youthful structure and I predict this will be one helluva wine down the road. One of the better 2006 CA pinots I have had this year.
