Brought by Doug in honor of Joe Cz. This was The Wine Enthusiast "Wine of the Year" for 2008.
All wines were acquired on release and professionally stored. Pristine bottles; fills were well into the neck. Wines were decanted off the sediment about 5 hours before the tasting; bottles were rinsed and wine poured back into the bottles.
I think there was a 1998 E+E Black Pepper Shiraz poured as well?
Served with a fruit tart.
As expected, the overall quality level was quite high.
2002 Louis Jadot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Clos de la Chapelle Domaine du Duc de Magenta Flawed
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Dark yellow in color. Flavors that would indicate premature oxidation... bananas and butterscotch. Some apple and pineapple fruit flavors as well, but the zest this wine should have was just not evident. Drinkable, but still flawed.

2002 Williams Selyem Chardonnay Hawk Hill Vineyard 86 Points
USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Apples, brown spices and medium bodied. There is still some unabsorbed oak that still needs to be integrated, but this wine just doesn't have the structure to age enough to let that happen. Better with food, but the oak was a bit intrusive.

2001 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese 90 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Nice evolved flavors of dried apples, pears and petrol. Lovely balance in the mouth with medium acidity and good lip-smacking length. Still lively; holding onto youthfull energy. Medium intensity. Not as good as this producer can be, but a wonderfully enjoyable wine.
