BLIND 1995 Bordeaux etc...

Introduction

Most of the wines were served double blind, in flights of six. Some of us knew a few specific wines were included, but none of us knew where in the flights to expect either the wines we personally brought or those we happened to know someone else had brought...

Flight 1 - FLIGHT 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1995 Château Haut-Brion

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Tasted BLIND. TN: tight. Dark fruit . Structured. Tobacco. A bit closed. Good potential for long-term development. I liked this wine quite a bit, but preferred both the '95 an '90 Pichon Lalande blind in this flight...

  • 1995 Château Meyney

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Tasted BLIND. Sweet oak. Rough around the edges. Not very exciting. New world?? My least favorite wine of the flight.

  • 1995 Château Prieuré-Lichine

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Tasted BLIND. From magnum. A little lean on the nose. Tannic. Black / red fruit. Firm structure. Opened and improved greatly with air. Very nice. My fourth favorite wine of the flight.

  • 1995 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tasted BLIND. My favorite wine of the flight. Similar aromatic components as #6 ('90 Pichon Lalande, also served blind), but denser, with more fruit. Seems younger than #6. Lush, but good structure. Chocolatey. Excellent.

  • 1995 Château Bellegrave (Pomerol)

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Served BLIND. My second to last favorite of the flight. Not much on the nose. Smells a little volatile. Better on the palate than on the nose. Dark fruit. Tight / firm.

  • 1990 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Served BLIND. My second favorite wine of the flight (after the '95 Pichon Lalande). Earthy, fairly wide open and expressive. Reddish fruit, tobacco, dirt, spice. Long finish. Nice balance. This seems older than 1995 (the "theme" for the tasting)...

Flight 2 - FLIGHT 2 (6 Notes)

  • 1995 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Served BLIND (though this was one of my contributions). Tight nose. Dark fruit, earth. There's something herbal underneath the fruit. Big tannins. Quite traditional in style. Very nice. My favorite wine of the flight.

  • 1995 Château Calon-Ségur

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Tasted BLIND. Bad bottle?? Sweaty. Others in the group were sure this was not a representative bottle.

  • 1995 Château Lynch-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tasted BLIND. Red raspberry fruit and spice on the nose. Simple. Very different profile than most of the wines we've had up to this point in the tasting. Ringer??? (Nope!). This was a big surprise for everyone...

  • 1995 Château d'Armailhac

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tasted BLIND. Tight nose. Some earth and herbs. Certainly young. Perhaps a '00 Bordeaux...? (wrong again). This showed very well and tasted like a younger Bordeaux. Very impressive showing, and my second favorite of the flight - after the Grand Puy Lacoste '95.

  • 1995 Le Bahans de Château Haut-Brion

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Tasted BLIND. Smoke and oak on the nose. More smoke on the palate. Not a standout for me in this line up.

  • 1995 Château Beauregard

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Tasted BLIND. My third favorite wine of the flight - though not behind the first two by much... Youthful nose. Deep fruit. Structured. Lush. Balanced. Very nice.

Flight 3 - FLIGHT 3 (6 Notes)

Flight 4 - FLIGHT 4 (2 Notes)

  • 1995 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Tasted BLIND. Dark. Big. Plush, but still structured. Excellent. Will go the distance. One of the better wines of the evening.

  • 2000 Château Lalande-Borie

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

As I brought this and we were down to a few wines in the last flight, I was pretty certain this was the Lalande Borie. Several folks deduced that it was the Ducru (they knew it was left but did not know I brought the Lalande Borie). For me, it lacked the power, structure and opulence of the wine that turned out to be the Ducru. TN: Deep, somewhat closed nose. Classic structure and profile on the palate. Note: this is the second time I have seen this wine show well in a blind tasting of more expensive Bordeaux. $16 retail.
