Linden got Anthony Hanson along to introduce 13 vintages of DRC's Romanée St. Vivant. Talk about a tasting of two halves. The youngsters were marvellous - the 05 and 06 right up there with the most spectacular young burgundies I've ever had, the 03 and 04 excellent wines for the vintages, the 01 and 02 both good, but a bit muted at present. The 99 was controversial - powerful, but I thought it most unattractive. Anthony Hanson and Jancis Robinson both gave it high marks. The 93 I thought feeble, the 88 drying out, and the final quartet (76/72/10/69) all past it. The 2005 was an almost unanimous WOTN.
2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Ripe, oaky, peppery fragrance, rich, concentrated, sumptous texture, really grand, luxurious, special

2005 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 96 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Bigger and drier than the 06, very spicy, very powerful, deep, some dry tannins - very young, but so obviously and spectacularly good

2004 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Browning, dramatically lighter in body than the two younger wines, but quite substantial on the palate, with powerful peppery fruit, austere, but none of the rawness of many 04s - very attractive.

2003 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Some farmyard on the nose to start with, but lots of spice too, only medium bodied, and on the palate not at all heavy - evolved, a bit spirity, and there's a dry grip at the end, lots of rich fruit

2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Unforthcoming on the nose at first, but in due course there was a strawberry and savoury perfume, some undergrowth on the palate, with spicy oak in the background, fine albeit muted today.

2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Even shier on the nose than the 02, a bit milky too, but on the palate plush and spicy, with a firm dry finish

1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Very dark, opaque in the middle, beefy oxidised nose, monolithic, dense and chocolately, grippy at the finish. Surly and unappealing today, and given the oxidative nose I'm not sure this is a sound bottle. [This divided those present with about half thinking it fine and in need of time]

1993 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 88 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Browning, shy on the nose, shy on the palate, plush, dry, but not really saying very much [others were more enthusiastic]

1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 88 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Fresh and fragrant on the nose, malty, rich, sweet core of fruit, but very grippy on the finish - drying out

1976 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 88 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Very brown, but fragrance, interesting honeyed nose, with a medicinal tone, and a nice balance of sweet and savoury, but fading

1972 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 87 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Malty nose, not wholly clean, some smooth and sweet fruit on the palate, but really not very distinguished

1970 Marey-Monge (Domaine de la Romanée-Conti) Romanée St. Vivant 87 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Brown, some smooth sweet fruit, some grippy tannins, drinkable, but unexciting

1969 Marey-Monge (Domaine de la Romanée-Conti) Romanée St. Vivant 87 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
A bit more to it than the 70 and 72, with a fresh malty nose; like the others here, quite thick and smooth and sweet, but dull
