Friday night at home - take-out Italian from Gianmarco with Ben. Jill and Danny at Danny's soccer game. Just had a couple glasses and then finished it Saturday night with Jill making salmon with fresh herbs. Didn't pump the bottle - left it in the decanter. It doesn't need that much air - next time store it in the bottle and pump it out.

Friday night before Ben's first game of the season (a tough 21-14 loss to Caldwell) with some leftover eggplant parm. Always a reliable bottle.

Beckett Tasting Group - Nov 2016: Light red/purple in color, this is a most feminine wine of the night. Bing cherry, spice, and sweet aromas. Getting strawberry, cherry, and some juicy acidity. This has a smooth finish and is an easy drinking wine.

Agree with the comment on brett funk... didn't completely blow off, but didn't bother me (although mrs couldn't get by it); opens up quickly from initial bright and slightly tart to a nice earthy barbera which complemented my pizza quite nicely.

Fresh, juicy, very little tannin, a little bit of smoke on the nose, enough acidity to hold up to ravioli in red sauce , enough ripe cherry flavors to drink well by itself. Easy to drink. Probably not a wine for holding on to.

Coravin # 1 - earth, blackberry, licorice, dark dark fruit. Little meaty and funky. Not sure if it's Brett or not. Possible. Hummm. Mediocre by itself, decent with food.

The color is a bricky ruby, closer to garnet; medium plus intensity. The nose is clean, medium plus to pronounced in intensity, with mostly black berries and black cherries. The nose is developing. The palate is dry, with medium plus acidity, medium alcohol at 13.5% and medium plus tannins. The body and flavor intensity are medium plus, with a nice mediumn plus finish. This wine is surprisingly youthful given its age and apperance. The nose is just captiviating. Drinkeable now, but this is likely to improve with several more years of cellaring. More of a food wine than a cocktail wine. A good value.

Avant Partir tasting - Robert Chadderdon Imports (Hinton's Wine Store): Bricky ruby. Dark cherry, mild oak. Long, persistent acidity, juicy cherry, good tannic grip. Polished. Food friendly.

Dark ruby, almost opaque core. Tangy, slightly funky nose, a compote of ripe strawberries and yeast. Medium bodied, similar flavours as the nose, balanced acid, some raspy tannins on the midpalate, and considerable length. Some spritz on opening. Fruits are ripe and punchy. Interesting and quite different to most Barbera d'Alba I've had.

Full disclosure: This was my first barbera, so I have no real perspective to judge it against its peers. But it was deightful, and I'm saddened that my four bottles are now gone.

So my cellar is dominated by Bordeaux and Riojas, and this was such a nice change of pace. But that leaves me at a bit of a loss to describe its unique flavor profile, so bear with me here. Not a tannic wine at all, it nevertheless had beautifully balanced acidity to give its dark cherries a wonderful high tone. Add to this a touch of raspberry on the top of the palate, with just the faintest hint of incense to round it out and provide more interest. Plenty of juiciness to the ample fruit, but do not equate this with an Oregon fruit drink...this is Old World wine.

Although one need not hurry with any remaining bottles, I did get the impression that the wine is at peak or slightly, slightly past, and I suspect the wine has no further upside to ageing.

A delightful weeknight wine, and a superb introduction to this varietal.

Wonderful notes of berries, herbs, and chocolates. Excellent mouth as it dissolves on the palate leaving little or no hints of powder once consumed. Forest and Portobello are present on the end. Typical for the Barbera expression, but extremely good for the quality and price.
