2012 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Catena High Mountain VinesMendoza more |
8/26/2016 - Tony Poli wrote: 82 pointsFollowed the Catena cab at the Southern Hemisphere red tasting. Harsher, bigger, probably goes with a slab of red meat. But less complex. There was an earlier, older Malbec in the lineup that was much better. Perhaps this needs time. |

2011 Bodega Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon Catena High Mountain VinesMendoza more |
8/26/2016 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 90 pointsTheme was Southern Hemisphere red. This tasted like a cab, and a good one. Not very tannic, smooth and balanced, ready to drink. |

2014 Bodega Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon Catena Alta Historic RowsMendoza more |
4/12/2019 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 92 pointsTheme was Chile or Argentina. There were 5 Catena wines on the table, all were quite impressive. This was a dark, brooding Cab that needed time to open up. After some air, sweet nose, big, complex palate. Tons of dark fruit. Probably drank too young. |

2016 Trapiche Malbec BroquelMendoza more |
8/12/2019 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 86 pointsWell, Sarabz76 really doesn’t seem to like this stuff. Consistent 70 point ratings. It’s not great, but quite a bit more drinkable than 70. A tad bitter at the finish, but decent fruit, both on the nose and palate. |

2017 Familia Zuccardi Malbec ConcretoAltamira more |
1/4/2019 - Tony Poli wrote: 89 pointsTheme was Malbec, blind. Decanted about 2 hours, based on other notes. Dark purple color, looked as young as it was. Very fruity nose. Both nose and palate were described as “lacking wood” or oak. Since it is aged in concrete vats, I guess we guessed that correctly. Long finish. Somewhat linear, and not terribly complex, but pleasant. |

4/7/2023 - Tony Poli Does not like this wine: 80 pointsParker was wrong. I can’t go to 65, like another note, but this was sour, unpleasant. |

2005 Fetish Wines PlaymatesBarossa Valley Shiraz Blend, Syrah more |
5/16/2012 - Tony Poli wrote: 85 pointsBit of a fruit bomb. I have also had The Watcher from Fetish, which I thought was much more elegant, closer to old world than this one. Delicious, but too delicious, to the detriment of the other aspects of the wine. |

2011 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Stump JumpMcLaren Vale more |
5/14/2015 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 88 pointsNot a huge amount to say about this, except these Stump Jump wines always seem to deliver more than expected for the price. This had a bit of barnyard on the nose, along with the red fruit. Pleasant simple palate, fruity with some acidity, and would be a worthy Cotes du Rhone. Nice. |

2003 Rosemount Estate Cabernet/Merlot/Petit Verdot Vintner's ReserveMcLaren Vale Red Bordeaux Blend more |
9/9/2006 - Tony Poli wrote: 89 pointsWe were told by the associate at the PA Wine & Spirits store that this was a red in the Bordeaux style, that in fact it was the Rosemount Estate Traditional Cabernet, but with a different label as it was sold to PA as a Chairman's Special. We bought a case - he said we could return unopened bottles if we didn't like it. His recommendation was spot on. We would consider this wine a bargain at $20, at $8.99 we may buy another case, if any remains. |

2003 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignonmore |
10/27/2013 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 89 pointsDark garnet, with a hint of brown at the edge. Eucalyptus and some anise on the nose along with the dark fruit. Classic cab palate, lacking a lot of complexity, but approachable and pleasant. Drink up, it probably won't get any better. |

2010 Shaw and Smith ShirazAdelaide Hills more |
2/23/2018 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 92 pointsFriends brought this from Australia, we haven't been able to find it here. Dark garnet, with just a hint of brick. Fruit forward nose, some sweetness, no barnyard. Full bodied palate, lots of dark fruit, blackberries, black cherries, some pepper. Long finish. Some guessed Australian due to the screw-cap, but it did not taste distinctively Aussie. Some guess French. All liked it - it is really good stuff. |

2018 Xanadu Chardonnay DJL Margaret Rivermore |
10/15/2020 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 90 pointsLight straw color. A bit of oak on the nose, as well as melon and pears. I could taste the oak when it first hit my tongue, but the oak then disappeared. A bit steely for an oaked Chard, this was quite good, especially for the price. Palate was fruity and rounded out as it took on air. |

2017 Xanadu Cabernet Sauvignon DJLMargaret River more |
3/20/2020 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 91 pointsDark purple color. Interesting, non-Cab like nose, dark fruits, some forest floor, a touch of mint. Palate was very smooth for a young Cab, decently integrated. Dark fruits, some chocolate, a hint of pencil lead. Good structure, long finish. Incredible QPR, but I find this to be common with the Margaret River wines that I manage to get my hands on. |

2017 Xanadu Chardonnay Margaret Rivermore |
11/23/2019 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 92 pointsLight on its feet, enough acid to stand up to food, wonderful mouthfeel, good fruit on the palate. Pears and some melon. Long finish. At dinner (in Pittsburgh) with a friend from Perth. This was representative of the better Margaret River Chardonnays that we have tasted. |

2015 Wildberry Estate Chardonnay ReserveMargaret River more |
5/27/2018 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 90 pointsLight golden color. Pineapple dominated the nose, with a bit of citrus. Palate was not as round as we had expected, this is Chardonnay, and not a Chablis. Very distinctive flavors, a bit of oak, but not dominant or unpleasant. Some mango, citrus and spice mixed in with pears. Long, pleasant finish. Got better with a bit of air. Paired with grilled halibut, I liked the pairing better than Rosalie - she wanted rounder. Interesting wine. |

2013 Leeuwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Art SeriesMargaret River more |
5/24/2019 - Tony Poli wrote: 91 pointsTheme was Australia or New Zealand, blind. This was really too young. We decanted for about 3 hours, and the nose changed over time. Dark purple color, lots going on in the mouth. Good stuff, just needs more time. |

2015 Wildberry Estate Chardonnay ReserveMargaret River more |
5/24/2019 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 90 pointsTheme was Australia or New Zealand, blind. Blind was kind of silly, our group really doesn’t know these wines. And they were all surprisingly good. We had a concentration of wines from Margaret River (both of ours were, from our cellar, and I had suggested that region to another member, who was shopping for this week). This had good acidity, more than a typical French Chard. Light gold color, citrus dominated the nose. Most guessed Chardonnay, that was the flavor profile. Long finish. |

2013 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art SeriesMargaret River more |
11/30/2018 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 92 pointsTheme was Chardonnay from anywhere, blind. This didn’t please everyone, but I was quite impressed. Light straw color, complex nose with pears and citrus. Big palate, with some well integrated oak, citrus, sonpme spice. Long finish. Most thought it tasted old world, but voted new world because of the screw cap. 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2013 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art SeriesMargaret River more |
10/29/2016 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 91 pointsOur first Leeuwin Art Series. Bright and crisp, both on the nose and palate. The oak was prominent on the palate, which detracted from what otherwise was a lovely Chardonnay. We will let the others sit a bit. |

2009 Evans & Tate Chardonnay Classic Crisp Chardonnay Margaret Rivermore |
7/27/2018 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 91 pointsTheme was Australia. We only had one Shiraz, a “The Boxer” from Mollydooker. This one followed a 1999 (1999!!) Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay, which was fantastic. This was not far behind. Very light in color, especially for an 11 year old Chard. Crisp, fruity nose. No one came close on guessing the age. Wonderfully complex palate, lots of fruit, pears, apples, some citrus. Long finish. Terrific wine. We bought it at the winery and lugged it home, was worth it. Love to source some Evans and Tate here, not much seems to get to the US. |

2014 Woodlands MargaretMargaret River Red Bordeaux Blend more |
10/21/2016 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 91 pointsAt a Cabernet tasting. This is too young, really, but it had a wonderful fruity nose, and a complex, nuanced palate. No one guessed Australia, despite the screw cap. Looking forward to the remaining bottles, after some cellar time. |

11/23/2019 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 93 pointsThis was drinking perfectly tonight. We liked it before, on its own. Tonight our guests ordered steak, so we opened this (after starting with a Xanadu Chardonnay, also from Margaret River). Paired well with the steaks, and was enjoyable with our lighter entree’s. Good effort. |

1/28/2006 - Tony Poli wrote: 86 pointsQuaffable, screw top, a pleasant surprise for the price. Fruit and tannins in a nice balance for a young cabernet. I have no real sense of how it might age, but I doubt I will have to find out. We will be drinking this over the next few weeks. |

2013 Montes Alpha MalbecColchagua Valley more |
1/4/2019 - Tony Poli wrote: 92 pointsTheme was Malbec, blind. Decanted a couple of hours, along with our other wine, 2017 Zuccardi Concreto. The nose out of the bottle seemed a bit sour, especially after the fruity nose on the Concreto. But after it took on air, the nose smoothed out and gained complexity. Color was dark garnet, with a bit of brick at the rim. Palate was quite smooth, dark fruits, some spice. Long finish. Better than the Zuccardi at about half the price. Showed quite well. |
