1995 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Heimbourg Sélection de Grains NoblesAlsace more |
9/26/2016 - Neurowine1 wrote: 97 pointsThere is no mistaking this for anything other than a Zind SGN. Gobs and gobs of extracted honeyed apricot fruit, wild flowers, and ambrosia. It coats the throat like sweet liquid wax. Cutting through this is a laser-beam of acid that keeps this utterly uncloying despite what is an obscene (nearly Kracher-esque) level of residual sugar. This has aged perfectly and is even more memorable than the 99 Zind Clos Jebsal SGN I had in '09. This is a remarkable wine that highlights the brilliance of the vigneron and the Heimbourg terroir, and thrills like a d'Yquem. This needs about 8 people to get through a bottle and is not an everyday wine, but I could get used to drinking this on any special occasion. Wow, just wow! |

6/20/2023 - Neurowine1 Likes this wine: 97 pointsThis is a stunning wine. Double decanted. Effusive nose of dark fruits, forest floor, sl touch of brett. Perfectly balanced, nuanced, great mineral core. Essence of syrah here and about as good as it gets. Pure silk Volnay-ish finish. |

9/13/2015 - Neurowine1 wrote: 96 pointsI dare say this is even better than the btl I drank in 2012. This wine is still drinking beautifully and has aged gracefully if it has aged at all. This is a staggeringly beautiful tempranillo and could hold it own in the company of the finest Spanish (and non-Spanish!) wines. Laser beams of dark fruits, tobacco, tar, garrigue, licorice, Provencal herbs, melted chocalate... The flavor profile is incredibly deep and long. The finish goes on for a minute. So sad that this was my last btl but it did not disappoint. This is one to re-buy at auction. |

A pointe now, but probably has 5 more years in it. This is the true essence of L Bank Bordeaux. You will not find better. |

3/5/2019 - Neurowine1 Likes this wine: 96 pointsMy final btl of the beloved '78 PL (a vintage that marked the end of an era at the chateau). This remains a high-water mark in Bordeaux for me and is currently at the pinnacle of where of an aged claret ought to be. Subdued perfume of black currants, tar, mushrooms, and lead. In the mouth, incredibly polished (Burgundian), nuanced, layered, and long. Lovely, just lovely. I could drink this all day. I don't see these beauties improving in any way as they really couldn't get any better. While I am sad to have polished off this last bottle (after looking at it on the display rack of my cellar for the last 12 years), it was worth the wait. |

10/2/2015 - Neurowine1 wrote: 96 pointsAbsolutely gorgeous! Having worked through almost a whole case of 02 DP, I can safely say this is more impressive (and I love the '02 Dom). Perfect bead, huge yeasty and yellow fruit nose leaps from the glass. Creamy, delicate, multi-layered, and perfectly balanced. Finish goes on and on. This has aged effortlessly and is likely on a very long plateau. My first experience with this wine, but I think I agree with Hugh Johnson that this is one of champagne's best kept secrets. Love it! |

9/24/2011 - Neurowine1 wrote: 96 pointsMind-bending wine. Stunning in every respect. Started out lush and plush and more like a Brunello. With an hour of air time, acid, tar, and minerals came through that make it clearly Piemontese. An amaziing wine experience. Loved it! |

3/16/2023 - Neurowine1 Likes this wine: 96 pointsThis is a supremely good Hermitage now drinking at the top of its game. Dark fruit, smoked meat, ash, porcinis. The thing that sets this wine apart however is an absolute Volnay-like texture. Pure silk. Very delicate and sexy juice. 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

8/31/2016 - Neurowine1 Likes this wine: 96 pointsThis is spectacular, truly a mindbendingly delicious N Rhone. 8-10% marsanne (I think). No decant. This is my first experience with Hermitage in '07. My concerns about the rainy spring and so-so summer heat, at least for this bottle, disappeared at the first sniff. Gorgeous dark fruit, figs, tar, garrigue, saddle leather, and tobacco in an incredibly clean and polished package. Beautiful mouth feel. The texture of this wine reminded me of a Musigny or Amoureuses. It has that masculine N Rhone power but it is wrapped up in a silk glove. It goes on for 40+ seconds. With lamb loin... awesome, just awesome. The one thing standing between this and perfection is the very soft and ripe tannins. This wine is clearly in the zone and is probably not going to make old bones. This is not a flaw but suggests one should probably drink that remaining bottles in the next 5-6 years. But seriously, this is really impressive juice and one of my best red wine experiences of the last year (or two)! |

5/15/2022 - Neurowine1 wrote: 95 pointsReally stunning perfectly made traditional Barolo. About as good as it gets. At first sip seemed slightly pungent/lean, but after 3 hours opened and then decanted, it was perfect. Dried cherries, tobacco, tar, rose petals, some orange peel. All the good stuff you would expect from a baroli of this caliber. It was aged flawlessly. I don't see this getting any better, but hopefully will remain in the zone while I get to another bottle or two I am still holding. Made a very fun pairing (traditional vs modern) with an 00 Scavino Carbobric and grilled hanger steak. |

Toasty bread, citrus, stone fruits, honeysuckle... Amazing mouthfeel and the finish went on and on. I could probably drink no other brut for the rest of my life but the 02 Dom and be contented. |

10/6/2012 - Neurowine1 wrote: 95 pointsA stunning wine. Gorgeous pure laser beam notes of black cherry, dark plums, tobacco, tar, and rose petals. Classically styled but with a modernist touch with some sweet wood notes that I suspect come from barrique. Really impressive and about as good as it gets. Tannins are still a bit angular and I easily see another 15 years of beauty in this. |

2/22/2014 - Neurowine1 wrote: 95 pointsOk, this is spectacular. Full stop. Absolutely stunning expression of island grenache. That this is over 15% EtOH is mind-boggling. This wine is clean, pure, light on its feet, and impeccably balanced. Really dangerous combo! Clearly unfined which really adds a lot to this one. One is transported to Sardinia before the stuff hits your lips. It is drinking beautifully at the moment but has the structure for another decade of impressive drinking. I am an idiot for only buying a couple btls. |

6/13/2021 - Neurowine1 Likes this wine: 95 pointsThis is drop dead gorgeous. Full stop. Absolutely textbook Barolo flavor profile. Ripe dark plum and black cherry, shiitake mushroom, fresh laid asphalt, decaying leaves, and dried wildflowers. Could not be more stylish or cleanly made. Does a nice dance b/w classic and modern. What struck me though was the Musigny-like peacock's tail texture of this wine. Just so silky, sexy, and polished. I have never felt Barolos were particularly burgundian, but this one clearly is. This was one of the great Barolos I have had over the last decade. So happy to have a big collection of '00-'07 AC Barolos in the box. I am definitely looking forward to many more great experiences with these over the next 10+ years. |

12/5/2013 - Neurowine1 wrote: 95 pointsThe last of CS for this wine (blend is 70%CS/30%CF), having gone to 100% CF in '01. This is absolutely spectacular juice. Striking nose of black cherry, cola, licorice, and wild herbs. Beautiful and elegantly textured. Very sexy yet quite complex. Wood is not shy here, but all is forgiven. Really a strange hybrid of Bordeaux tastes wrapped in a Burgundian package. While I can't sat this speaks of Italy I can say this is drop dead gorgeous. Really came alive with the lamb kabobs. No one would not love this! Drinking perfectly at the moment. I now see why all the hubbub about Paleo. |

10/8/2012 - Neurowine1 wrote: 95 pointsThis to me is about as good as Loire cab franc gets. Absolutely brilliant nuanced laser-beam of a wine with red fruit, gorgeous minerals, perfect acid balance, and medium finish. At once crunchy, but serious and very very classy. The heat of the vintage is not at all apparent. This was drinking much better than it was 4+ years ago when I had the last bottle. I only wish I had bought more. |

Multilayered and incredibly complex. The class is so apparent. This is a very special and unique wine to be shared with those who appreciate such things. It is a bit understated so those who like big whites may not get it. For me, it was an atom bomb of a wine. |

2002 Alois Kracher Noble Wine #12 Zwischen den SeenNeusiedlersee White Blend more |
12/20/2011 - Neurowine1 wrote: 95 pointsThis wine is extraordinary in the sense that I have never had anything quite like it. The sheer sweetness of it is mind-numbing. You just feel sticky all over after a couple sips. It is an almost syrupy in texture. It has the characteristic Kracher profile of gobs of apricot and honey hemmed in by ample acidity, but this was taken to a much higher level than the dozen or so numbered Kracher TBAs I have had over the years. It really is a Kracher on steroids. I suppose this is not unlike an eszencia, but there is something distinctly Austria about this one. You can't really have more than half a glass as it is just too bloody rich. If there is one thing I would have liked it would be a spot more acid. Certainly it is there, but the fact that this wine is about 40% pure residual sugar means it really needs every ounce of acid it can get. But, seriously, this is a very special elixer. This is a unique wine experience for a special occasion with loved ones. |

This will remain awe-inspiring for the next couple decades. |

In the mouth, quite extracted but nicely balanced black cherry, tar, and forest floor. The finish was gorgeous and went on forever. Really really nice. Surprisingly good. Was phenomenal with lamb stew. There was something bordelais about it in terms of the layering but clearly a tempranillo with Spanish sensibilities. So happy to have a few more in the box. Long a fan of Jura reds, esp the master Puffeney, this one took me to a whole new level of appreciation. Playing in the snow all day, and expecting this to be the ultimate apre-ski drink, got my expectations up, but this wine really delivered. A gorgeous laser beam of bright red fruits, mountain herbs, and some subtle vegetal characteristics hemmed in w/ perfect acidity. So easy drinking and perfectly a pointe. This is not a meditation wine, but one to enjoy with good friends and some salumi. I could drink this everyday and be happy. |

Hard to mistake this for a German riesling. This is the good stuff. Zind rarely if ever disappoints. |
