after my flag football kids & their parents left, i sliced some tri-tip & went to the cellar for a bottle of wine. i am damn glad i grabbed this one. i opened it & poured a glass for katy (it was the only glass she would get) & 1 for me & i plopped down on the couch to watch the final round of the masters (i love my dvr). i have never had a better bottle of match & rarely have i had a better bottle of cabernet. while i haven't posted notes or scores, i have had several bottles of the '05 butterdragon hill that i have always been pleased with & would have rated from 89-92, but this bottle on this night blew my socks off. it was everything i wanted in a cab with dark berry & plum fruit with hints of chocolate, fine tannins & just the right amount of acid for near perfect balance. balance. it went well with the medium-rare tri-tip & i enjoyed it almost as much on its own as i watched phil patiently make his way around augusta. as i was sipping the last glass, though, i did go scrounge up some dark chocolate. if this bottle is any indication, this wine is in a really wonderful place right now. i can't begin to say if it will improve or if it will maintain this level of pleasure for any length of time, but i am glad i have a few more bottles that i will not hesitate to open. i have happily sampled some of my '05s over the past yearbased upon a comment by stacey bressler last may & what i have sampled has generally been very good; but, i am now very curious about my '05 jones, '05 bressler, '05 hillside select, '05 switchback ridge &, oh yes, my '05 match baconbrook....perhaps a tasting is in order.

I haven't done a tasting note in a while, but this one inspired me. This wine is quite dark, not really bricking on the edges, but not purple, either. Vibrant red is how I would describe it. The nose is caramelized-brown-sugar-coated blackberries, with a touch of cassis, a little bit of tangerine citrus, and just a hint of saddle soap. Overall, I'm surprised by the sense of sweetness on the nose, but the overall effect is rich and deep. The palate retains the blackberry and cassis on the entry, but the sweetness is de-emphasized as the citrus comes forward. There's a fair amount of citrus-peel bitterness on the mid-palate, but not unbalancing at all. The back end repeats the hints of leather and maybe adds a little touch of smokiness, as well, while allowing the fruit to still shine through. There is still just a touch of tannic dryness on it. The one drawback may be just a touch of heat as one takes the swallow, but that fades as the wine goes down, and you are left with a great balance of black fruit, herbs, earth, and just a touch of vanilla, all of which lasts a good long time between sips. This is in a magical spot, and I truly wish I could get more. Really great now, but with the stuffing to last five to ten years or even longer. Have it with a good charcoal-grilled ribeye and all the usual accompaniments, and you will be living the good life. Great wine.

Had this weekend with our favorite Bistro burgers. Seamless. Beautifully integrated, lush and satisfying. Dark plummy flavors with a bit of cocoa and spice. Tannins provide nice full mouth feel; finish is prolonged and memorable.
Excellente!

Intense aromas upon opening of dark fruit and caramel/buttered nuts. Brownish tinge Decanted for 90 min. Drank over 3 hours. Palate of sweet dark blue fruit, preserves, brown sugar, caramel, blackberry pie. Offset by strong acid and tannic backbone. Perfectly balanced mouthfeel with long lingering finish. Expected this bottle to be good, got something great.

Popped and poured. Aroma has a good solid fruit base, along with some tobacco and oak. The taste is definitely fruit initially with plum and a bit of blueberry, but going into the tobacco flavor on the mid-palate. Has a good amount of acidity on the mid-palate to finish as well. This is a very well balanced wine.

Popped and poured with beef stew, and consumed over the course of 3-4 hours. Aroma is tar with blackberry and plum, as well as some leather that is a bit more underneath. The combination on the palate of all this really comes together, too. I suppose it might still be a bit too fruit forward for some, but it really hits in my wheelhouse.

Bot this from Vineyard in 07 and had it last weekend with steak from the grill. Fantastic Cali Cab. Drank a bottle 4 years ago and was tight. Now softened beautifully but with great structure. Perfect wine for steak.
Went to Match Vineyard website and they are going out of business. Small micro vineyard couldn't make it. Most bottles are now 45$ down from $75. I bot 18 bottles from 05-10.
$45 is not cheap, but this is a great value of an aged Cali Cab.
The wine looks violet colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like red currant.
The wine looks purple colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like mineral, medium toast and oak.

Tasting on Butterdragon Hill: Barrel sample. Deep garnet color. Wonderful aromatics, with notes of blackberry, cassis and floral tones. I could have smelled this all afternoon. Firm tannins, with flavors of spice, dark fruit and brown sugar. Finish lasts nearly a minute. My favorite on the day.

Double decanted off its sediment. Violet and floral elements with dark fruit overtones. Cassis and lavender with a long finish. Tame tannins. In a really great spot, and very pretty.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Magnum was decanted for 3.5 hours based on previous feedback. Bottle had some nice sediment in it after pouring. Expected something a little hot based on the nose. Found a very structured palate of deep black fruit with well rounded tannins. Not too bright, but definitely not 'Old World' either. A very nice and elegant Cali Cab, a great QPR.

Gorgeous. Smooth, integrated tannins. Full bodied. Cassis, black cherry, spice. Tar on the finish. Thick fruit. Just beginning to take on slight brick color around the edges. Drinking beautifully now. Drink now-2017.

Decanted for two hours before drinking with grilled strip steaks. Aroma of coffee, oak, blackberry and black pepper. Taste has blackberry, oak and tobacco. This was fantastic at 3 hours in the decanter. I don't know exactly when this will be best but it's great now with the decant. I'm sure it has plenty of years ahead of it, too.

Wow! This wine has aged phenomenally. Decanted for 20 mins as we were seated for dinner. Soft tannins, very low acidity, and silky smooth mouth feel. Clear hints of black currant and blackberry in the background. Lingers for a bit with a medium finish.

375ml bottle. We are neighbors of the owners and got this when they first started selling their wines. Its tremendous. Beautiful plummy fruit on the nose and excellent balance of blueberry and plums and prunes on the palate backed by nice wood notes and plenty of body. This scan keep going in the bottle for a while.
