We drank the 00 and 03 together. I liked the 03 better. Interestingly, three of the five at dinner liked the 00 better, but my glass of 03 kept becoming empty (how does that happen?). I continue to really like the Cuvee Indigene. Its a great wine.

1990 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône Château de Fonsalette Cuvée Syrah

more

6/9/2006 - BradE wrote: NR

Colorado High Country Part 1. Rayas Mini Vertical.: Flight 6 was two Fonslette's, the 88 and 90. The 1990 was a big beefy wine that really didn't go anywhere. Somewhat unripe and bitter. I have not had the Fonsalette before, so wasn't totally sure what to expect, but this was at best a pleasant wine, and certainly was a disappointment given the vintage.

Drank 1962 Leroy La Romanee and 1962 Leroy RSV side by side. An excellent pairing, and both were fantastic. The majority seemed to prefer the RSV, I favored the La Romanee. The RSV was darker, the fruit more pronounced. The La Romanee was sexier, more floral, and simply spoke to me more. A nice pairing.

A lovely bottle, well stored. Punches mid-weight, not heavy-weight. Excelled with food. An underperformer given the vintage, producer, and vineyard, but still a nice wine, that I would drink with pleasure.

Simply a spectacular bottle of wine. The nose was worth the price of admission alone. Pure smoke, bacon fat, ultra pleasure. On the palate, almost as good, but nothing could beat this nose. Mmm.

Drunk side by side - the 82 and 86 Chave. Two of us liked the 86 better (by just a bit), the other two thought we were bonkers. The 82 was the hedonist wine it typically is. Somewhat fat, great nose (from 10 feet you could pick it out of the decanter), but not too much bret. Good wine for current consumption, but unlikely to improve. The 86 was much more delineated, clearer, with the Chave nose and palate, but more restrained. Also unlikely to improve. A fun duo.

And coming down the home stretch, we have our lone Rhone entry. Loads of bret, but once settled in it was a wonderful wine. This is not the best Chave, but its a great drinking wine that complemented the ostrich course quite well.
