Decanted and let set a while before drinking. Learned the 1st time not to drink this one at 1st pour. Very smooth. Agree with jammy and dark.

Super jammy but smooth. I think my tastes have progressed to old world and good Pinot Noir, odd. At one point in time this would have been a 93 or 94 from me, really expected more complexity.

Great purple color and an inviting Carmel nose. Unfortunately, the “great” stops there. The taste is metalic and watered down with a flat, astriginent finish. Very disappointing for an Orin Swift wine.

A nose of red fruits and spice, dark garnet in color. A medium to full bodied kitchen sink blend, with black cherry, plum, licorice and spice on finish. Was good but expected more. www.winelx.com

This 2021 is its 5th itineration. The 8 years features a nice choice of grapes, This is a blend of Zinfandel, Syrah and petite Sirah. All three grapes used have Spice notes. Notes of White and black pepper. Interesting because you have different kinds of spice, spice from like a seasoning spice, as well as spice from heat as it ferments to dryness because of the brix level, the alcohol, which is so high, so its going to have some residual sugar so the fruitiness masks the high alcohol. All three grapes feature spice that gives this wine its complexity with its multitude of fruits that each induvial grape variety provides. it has both soft tannins and complexity. It has a nose of blackberry and pepper. A broad and opulent entry with a mid-palate of raspberry, black cherry, blueberry. The wine has nice length through the finish with ripe tannins and a close of sweet oak.
8 yrs also has its story. For 8 years the Cellars were barred from selling ANY Zinfandel wines. As soon as the 8 years were up they produced this wine as a homage to their home and to zinfandel. Zin drinkers will love this.

One dimensional and flat. This wine has gone downhill the past several vintages to be uninteresting. Sure it's tasty, but for $50? No way. Drinks like a <$20 zin.

Awesome zin. Very well balanced. Fresh green pepper on the nose. Black pepper, Dark chocolate, vanilla, with jammy dark berry and cherry flavors, citrus, and pepper on the palate. A Hint of celery and some light minerality as well. Good structure, long legs, and an almost chewy mouthfeel. Long finish with notes of raisin, vanilla, and black pepper. Decanted for three hours, and it could have used a bit more. Will be magic in a year or so.

2020 Orin Swift 8 Years in the Desert was rich, intense and spicy. The youthful Californian Zinfandel blend was clear and deep purple in colour without any noticeable sediments. Ripe fruit tones of cassis, blackcurrant and figs were followed by black pepper, cinnamon and liquorice spices.

The mouthfeel was dry, full-bodied and powerful, supported by a medium level of acidity and a high level of chewy tannin. There were flavours of ripe raspberry, black plum, kirsch, vanilla and smoke in a rather long, spicy finish. The 15.8% alcohol was reflected in its richness, ripe black fruits and abundance of spices. The empty bottle weighed 907 grams. Beef burger and marbled ribeye steak are the classic pairings.

Dave Phinney is the founder of Orin Swift Cellars, and perhaps the best known for his creation of The Prisoner, an iconic rich and smoky Zinfandel-based Californian red blend. Orin Swift 8 Years In The Desert is the epitome of the California style. The blend is predominantly composed of Zinfandel, complemented by Petite Sirah for structure and Syrah for depth. The wine is raised in 51% new French oak barrels for eight months.

This is a big and bold Zinfandel based red Blend from California.

Showing black fruits with tobacco, chocolates, coffee, cola, vanilla, cedar, licorice and mocha.

Full bodied with medium acidity.

Jammy and creamy. Smooth and easy drinking.

Enjoyable by itself, and would pair nicely with a burger.

Would be interesting to try it in a few years, as it might calm down a bit. Might be too sweet for some.

A blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah.

15.7% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

A blend of Zinfandel, Syrah and Petite Sirah Deep ruby w/ a purple hue. Med+ to pronounced aromas of ripe red cherry, blackberry, blueberry cobbler, vanilla, mocha and spice from 8 mos. in French & American oak, 63% new. Youthful. Dry, w/ some RS, and very fruit-forward. Med acidity & med to med+ tannins. High alcohol (15.6%). Full-bodied, w/ med+ intensity and length. A bit unbalanced on the hot, jammy side, but a crowd-pleasing velvet hammer nonetheless. Give it a little time and serve slightly cool.

An excellent blend which is predominantly zin, and is well rounded with good acidity to balance out the fruit. A strong fruity nose, and on mid-palate you get plumps, figs, and ends with a hint of spice like star anise. Excellent to drink by itself, or pair with good pasta or red meat heavy fishes.

Big, bold. Purple in color, black fruit bomb, good acidity and high tannin structure but the alcohol knocks you over the head. Not something I want to drink regularly.

Decanted at Garth’s. Great minerality, graphite and berries on the nose. Bright red fruit on the palate with mineral but not much in the way of tannins. Very tasty now, not sure if this is one to age in the cellar.

This is a big in your face sort of wine, not a lot of subtle notes but instead it is quite assertive in its flavors. Black fruit, cassis, leather, definite tannins, spice and earth are all present. The wine is dry, with a good mouthfeel and a long spicy finish. To my taste, the dryness and tannins give the wine character and bring all the rest of the flavors into a excellent balance.

Needed about an hour to blow off the alcohol, but once that happened, there was a great volume to the nose and the mouth, lots of raspberry and spice, with a nice hit of pepper and smoke on the finish. So, decant before drinking, and drink before 2022.

One-and-one-half hour decant. During decant, powerful blackberry brandy aromas with Epsom salts undertones. After resting, clear wine, bright garnet, no bricking. Nose was muted but still reminiscent of blackberry brandy less the alcoholic heat. Of course, the alcohol was still there lurking about like a grub under the surface. In the mouth, a chutney of raspberry, blueberry, fig and blackberry fruit, some bamboo and slate. It was surprisingly low on tannins and acid; the usual Zin mouth-watering experience was absent. Given the assemblage (Zin, Petite Sirah, Syrah) we had this with a molasses and Tabasco sauced smoked beef rib at Butcher & the Boar in Minneapolis. The flavors meshed into a wonderfully layered tasting experience. While the wine was very good and quite enjoyable with the food pairing we chose, I do not share the superlative hooplas others have given it. Perhaps this is because I never understood the glorification of The Prisoner wines with which Mr. Phinney cemented his reputation. Again, this wine was very very good, but its QPR is not great; we received this bottle as a gift so that was not a consideration here.
