4/19/2024 - bestdamncab Likes this wine: 97 pointsJoseph Phelps Vineyards Spring Release Event (Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Napa Valley): $262.50 futures, $375 retail. Enjoyed 4 pours today. Nose of mint, roasted black berry tarts, black currants, earth, chocolate, and lovely, rich cabernet fruit, same on the palate, big body, fruit forward, smooth, lovely, long finish, and a lovely aftertaste, wonder where the tannins were today (?), guess it needs 8 years to peak. Right after the 2012 Insignia pour this killed it. |

11/24/2022 - LearningWine Likes this wine: 87 pointsOn the nose crisp, citrus, pear, honeydew, melon. On the tongue good mouth feel, refreshing, citrus notes, melon, lemon peel, crisp finish. Of sauvignon blanc I would say this is one of the best I have encountered. Some have too much of a grassy note and this is just right with its aromas and flavors. |

A wine of precision, purity and freshness with balanced acid structure, a light mineral character and a luscious lemon cream palate with hints of Bosc pear and Pink Lady apple. |

Weightier. 13% alcohol. More pronounced fruit - white cherry. Ripe. Low tannins (vs medium minus for the volnay). A bit oaky. |

1/9/2024 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 92 pointsRetail $70. Heavy Bottle (761g, 1lb 10.9oz). DIAM10. All cards on the table: I am not all that familiar with the Joseph Phelps brand. I have tried Insignia at a few events, I came across a few older Cabs here and there, and perhaps a Chardonnay. But I am fairly certain that this is my first Phelps Pinot. Medium to dark color in the glass with wonderful red and dark berry fruit (cherry, raspberry, even a bit of plum), plenty of dark earth, and dried red rose petals. The palate is full and harmonious, with plenty of fruit but the tartness balances it nicely. It is pretty darned wonderful right now and a lovely quaff. But that heavy bottle.... |

3/12/2023 - LearningWine wrote: 92 pointsLet me just start by saying, Joseph Phelps always delivers. This Rhone style blend is delightful and delicious. On the nose blackberry and raspberry and a little pepper. To taste there is bright acidity and a nice texture and duration. Hints of raspberry and cherry with pepper notes from the syrah backbone. Overall a delicious wine that we are enjoying with bolgnese tonight. Looking forward to seeing how this develops over time. |

Flavors followed with almost sweet dark fruit with a beautiful acid balance giving a nice finish with a touch of spice. The dark fruit was ripe blackberry and cassis. Surprisingly a great GSM - better than a good Chateau du Pape! Age will make it better! |

8/30/2023 - KingsleyZissou Likes this wine: 90 pointsVery young Syrah-dominant GSM. Small amount of Viognier. 2 hour decant. Marked green oak influence on the nose, with peppery huckleberry, candied red fruits, oregano and ample caramel notes. Bit of dried floral aromas as it opened, but the oak remained somewhat overly-present throughout, which may be chalked up to its extreme youth. As might be the stalwart, precocious tannins on display — massive and still somewhat green in character. |

Smooth mid-palate with solid depth/concentration - medium plus body. Nice rich flavors of cassis, some spice, and cocoa. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep. A nice vintage of this wine - no surprise of the 92 to 94 rating from Dunnuck. 92% cab sauvignon, 4% petit verdot, 2% cab franc, 1% merlot, and 1% malbec. |

3/9/2024 - grafighter Likes this wine: 93 pointsCoravin’ed 1/3 of a bottle. I agree with Chefcar…low tannin with this vintage. Though, it’s only my first taste. And, I guess I like low tannin-wine with my ribeye tonight. I really enjoyed the nose and dark fruits on the palate it produced. Since there’s no 2020 from JP, I ended up with 6 bottles of 2021. These are more ready to drink than 2019 and 2018 in my opinion. |

3/24/2024 - csnash22 Likes this wine: 91 pointsGot this at a restaurant when the menu said it was an older vintage. I don’t want to do a full review because tasting conditions were not great and it definitely needs more time. My impression is that it is full bodied with structured tannins and there is potential, but it also tastes like a good, but fairly generic Napa Cab. Time will tell. |
