Joseph Phelps Vineyards Spring Release Event (Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Napa Valley): $262.50 futures, $375 retail. Enjoyed 4 pours today. Nose of mint, roasted black berry tarts, black currants, earth, chocolate, and lovely, rich cabernet fruit, same on the palate, big body, fruit forward, smooth, lovely, long finish, and a lovely aftertaste, wonder where the tannins were today (?), guess it needs 8 years to peak. Right after the 2012 Insignia pour this killed it.

On the nose crisp, citrus, pear, honeydew, melon. On the tongue good mouth feel, refreshing, citrus notes, melon, lemon peel, crisp finish. Of sauvignon blanc I would say this is one of the best I have encountered. Some have too much of a grassy note and this is just right with its aromas and flavors.

It made for a good pre-thanksgiving dinner refreshment!

The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc emanates sweet floral orange blossom, white peach, and citrus peel aromatics. A wine of precision, purity and freshness with balanced acid structure, a light mineral character and a luscious lemon cream palate with hints of Bosc pear and Pink Lady apple.

Angler w/ Morgan (Angler, SF): @angler blind. Slightly more vibrant magenta than the Volnay. Medium minus color. More pronounced vanilla. Pinot fruit. Weightier. 13% alcohol. More pronounced fruit - white cherry. Ripe. Low tannins (vs medium minus for the volnay). A bit oaky.

Laterals:
- Burgundy - this much fruit and oak would probably come with more structure.
- NZ - would have less oak and more tannins.

Probably:
- CA - Sonoma coast or Santa Cruz mountains (cooler climate, lower ripeness). Kinda reminds me of Peay. Maybe lower acid than Peay.

It’s good.

Actually: Phelps. Freestone vineyards. 2021. 14.5% (!) - felt 13-13.5%. Holds alcohol quite well.

Retail $70. Heavy Bottle (761g, 1lb 10.9oz). DIAM10. All cards on the table: I am not all that familiar with the Joseph Phelps brand. I have tried Insignia at a few events, I came across a few older Cabs here and there, and perhaps a Chardonnay. But I am fairly certain that this is my first Phelps Pinot. Medium to dark color in the glass with wonderful red and dark berry fruit (cherry, raspberry, even a bit of plum), plenty of dark earth, and dried red rose petals. The palate is full and harmonious, with plenty of fruit but the tartness balances it nicely. It is pretty darned wonderful right now and a lovely quaff. But that heavy bottle....

Personally, I think there’s potential. Plenty of cranberry and strawberry fruit, a smooth palate, generous freshness. It just isn’t ready.

Let me just start by saying, Joseph Phelps always delivers. This Rhone style blend is delightful and delicious. On the nose blackberry and raspberry and a little pepper. To taste there is bright acidity and a nice texture and duration. Hints of raspberry and cherry with pepper notes from the syrah backbone. Overall a delicious wine that we are enjoying with bolgnese tonight. Looking forward to seeing how this develops over time.

A beautiful wine - young but delicious! Nose of leather, spice and dark fruit. Flavors followed with almost sweet dark fruit with a beautiful acid balance giving a nice finish with a touch of spice. The dark fruit was ripe blackberry and cassis. Surprisingly a great GSM - better than a good Chateau du Pape! Age will make it better!

Very young Syrah-dominant GSM. Small amount of Viognier. 2 hour decant. Marked green oak influence on the nose, with peppery huckleberry, candied red fruits, oregano and ample caramel notes. Bit of dried floral aromas as it opened, but the oak remained somewhat overly-present throughout, which may be chalked up to its extreme youth. As might be the stalwart, precocious tannins on display — massive and still somewhat green in character.

Overall, very tasty paired with a meal, but certainly needs a couple more years to develop. Not a massive amount of potential but enough to warrant a bit of aging.

10th MW Symposium, Wiesbaden - Day 2: Alcohol 14.5%, 3.3 g/l residual sugar, 5.6 g/l acidity, 3.7 pH
Vineyard: 242 hectares of vineyards, spread over eleven vineyards in 8 different appellations (AVAs). The vineyards are managed according to biodynamic principles, and vinification is gentle., Vines 30+yo, Soil Type: Basalt, schist, clay, volcanic lime, pebbles or gravel.

Vinification: In 2019, bud break occurred around the same time as 2018 but was delayed compared to our historical averages due to cold, saturated soils from the wet winter. May was cold with an unusual amount of rainfall which delayed flowering in some areas. Canopy management was key in 2019 because of vigorous canopies and moderate temperatures leading to less stress on the vines. July was cooler than average, but August and September warmed to push ripening ahead. Harvest weather patterns remained dry and fruit quality was excellent with well-developed flavours and structure. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon marks the first vintage to include fruit from the new Joseph Phelps vineyard called El Venadito, located in the Oak Knoll District, just south of the winery’s Yountville Vineyard.

Maturation: Aged for eighteen months in 48% new oak (58% French, 42% American) and 52% older French and American oak barrels before bottling. Coopers included Ermitage, François Frères, Demptos (French and American), Canton (American), Dargaud Jaegle, Orion and Taransaud.
Oak influence: Ample and generous, the palate seduces with its fruity aromas (black cherry, blackberry, black plum) spiced with vanilla. Characteristic notes of violet, black fruit and tobacco blend harmoniously with fragrances of spices, pastry, dried earth and aromatic herbs.
Months in bottle: 1

94% Cabernet Sauvingon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% merlot, 1% Malbec

Plum Market wine tasting. Dark ruby fruit - blackberry, currants, dark cherry, and a little blueberry & plum. Smooth mid-palate with solid depth/concentration - medium plus body. Nice rich flavors of cassis, some spice, and cocoa. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep. A nice vintage of this wine - no surprise of the 92 to 94 rating from Dunnuck. 92% cab sauvignon, 4% petit verdot, 2% cab franc, 1% merlot, and 1% malbec.

Even so young, this is a full-bodied Cab without a ton of tannins. We opened it a couple hours before enjoying and it was great. Lots of cherry fruit, leather and earthiness with a nice long finish.

Coravin’ed 1/3 of a bottle. I agree with Chefcar…low tannin with this vintage. Though, it’s only my first taste. And, I guess I like low tannin-wine with my ribeye tonight. I really enjoyed the nose and dark fruits on the palate it produced. Since there’s no 2020 from JP, I ended up with 6 bottles of 2021. These are more ready to drink than 2019 and 2018 in my opinion.

Got this at a restaurant when the menu said it was an older vintage. I don’t want to do a full review because tasting conditions were not great and it definitely needs more time. My impression is that it is full bodied with structured tannins and there is potential, but it also tastes like a good, but fairly generic Napa Cab. Time will tell.
