  • 2020 Lewelling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena

Purple fruit - currants, dark cherry, blackberry, and plum. Fruit forward and quite rich - more or less a fruit bomb. Popped/poured but drank out of a decanter for a couple hours. Improved a little with time. Drank next to the 2018 Lewelling Wight cab which was quite a bit better - more structure. Franky I had a hard time drinking the 2020 St Helena cab next to the 2018 Wight. I’ll refrain from rating this wine since it’s just not my style - too rich/sweet and lacks structure. 100% cab.

  • 2018 Lewelling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Wight

Dark ruby fruit - currants, dark cherry, and blackberry. Fruit forward and fairly rich but a little structure which was nice in comparison to the 2020 vintage which is a fruit bomb. Smooth mid-palate with solid depth/concentration - medium plus body. Nice vibrant flavors of cassis, some spice/licorice, and a little graphite component. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep. Popped/poured but drank out of a decanter for a couple hours. Not much improvement with time but appears to be at a nice drinking point. A solid vintage of this wine but the 97 rating from Dunnuck is generous in my opinion. 100% cab.

  • 2019 La Pelle Cabernet Sauvignon Alluvium

The nose of this wine is enticing - I could tell that I was in for a treat. Dark ruby fruit - currants, dark cherry, and blackberry. Smooth mid-palate with a beautiful purity and decent depth/concentration - medium/medium plus body. Nice rich/vibrant flavors of cassis, some spice/herbs, a little black tea, and a mineral/graphite component. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep - I believe the finish will benefit from some more time. Slow ox during the day for around ten hours and drank out of a decanter for a couple more. Improved a little with time. In my opinion, quite a step-up from their entry level cab - although I’ve only had the 2016 and 2021 vintages. No surprise of the 95 rating from WA and also no surprise that the vineyard sits next to Dr. Crane on the western side of Saint Helena. 100% cab.

8/11/2023 6:23:00 AM - BadMonkey - I saw your note stating that you recently picked up some 18 Janzen Cloudy Cab. could you share when you purchased those? always a favorite

  • Franken Berry says:

10/14/2022 10:27:00 AM - I would be interested in your thoughts/strategies towards the 2019 Scarlett cabs. I think that the last vintage that I purchased was 2016, which I recall was quite good.

  • Franken Berry says:

9/1/2022 12:33:00 PM - The baker & hamilton cabernet 2019, from vine hill ranch just showed up in a email offer. looks to be a great price for quality fruit. I saw you have a few bottles. thoughts?

  • Franken Berry says:

8/15/2022 5:03:00 PM - I believe that both the 18 and 19 Scarlett reserves are available through the website. any thoughts about the 19 vs. the 18?

  • Franken Berry says:

6/17/2022 3:07:00 PM - any insight on the upcoming 2020 Carter release?

  • davidandrose says:

6/2/2022 5:02:00 AM - Appreciate and concur with your perspective, and your note-taking in general. Thanks for sharing and if you don't mind my asking, where are you located?

  • davidandrose says:

5/31/2022 7:09:00 PM - Agree with your comments on Lewelling and Hailey's spin on their wine vs Dave; oddly I find that her Hayfork cabs made with the same Lewelling fruit have a little more umph and strength, and less of the sweetness you reference that's been more prominent in recent vintages. Also not sure if you knew that Mike Smith produced the 19 vintage for Switchback. I've tasted the merlot 2x and the cab recently, and I walked away unsure about the wines I've enjoyed for 20 years. When I commented about the vintage I was told that Thomas Brown has the role beginning with the 21 vintage.

11/8/2021 12:16:00 PM - I have been scrolling through your cellar for ideas on new wines - lots of great ideas, including the Lewis Cabs, so thanks for posting all of this. You and I seem to share a strategy, I think, of seeking out high quality cabs made from great sources, without breaking the bank. Like you, I have been impressed with the Janzen single vineyard cabs that Venge makes, and started to add some of the 2018 Napa cabs from Janzen. I have also found the 2017 at a great price (at Woods). curious what made you dive so deeply into this particular vintage of that wine

8/15/2021 5:37:00 PM - Thanks for the Carter rec.....absolutely amazing tasting. The 2019s are stunning....We had our 24 year old who has become a fan of big reds with us and have reset his expectations around wine for life! Not sure I can wait until Fall for the bottles to show up :). Best tasting we have ever had. Thanks!

  • Franken Berry says:

7/20/2021 12:04:00 PM - BAdmonkey, just FYI, the Outpost release today includes some older cabernets from 2017 and 2018, including the True Vineyard. I recall that you mentioned some regret over skipping them upon release.

  • Cyclist says:

7/3/2021 3:06:00 PM - Yeah, I'm glad they turned out so well. The 2020 Napa/Sonoma vintage will likely be sparse for red wines (and definitely one that will warrant tasting before splurging), so good to know which ones to grab early. Cheers!

  • Franken Berry says:

6/22/2021 3:09:00 PM - BAD - thoughts on the "`19 Carters just released??

  • Cspeier says:

6/5/2021 2:44:00 PM - Thanks for your recs! We'll let you know where we go and what we think. Excited to plan the trip (we have one of our adult kids in SF so we now have a built in excuse to go often :))! We spent a lot of "kid" time in TC with lax/soccer/hockey.....we may have had teams competing on the same field! Thanks much.

6/4/2021 11:28:00 AM - Hi Badmonkey--thanks for accepting the connection. It looks like I'm one more of the Michigan gang (located from the Lansing area to Traverse City this year) who is a big Mike Smith fan. We are heading to Napa in August and looking for "go to" suggestions. Thoughts include Carter, Alpha Omega, Bacio Divino (if we can visit?).....We had a wonderful Hall visit last Napa trip and already have a Myriad and Venge visit set up....any recs would be welcome as I see (and value) your tasting notes on many of the wines we drink!

4/2/2021 10:54:00 AM - Thanks for the response to my message. Glad you got on the Argot Association list. The Pinot is excellent and you have experienced the Cab. Chardonnay was OK and the Syrah pretty solid but needs time. Justin is super nice and I am glad you got to speak with him. The Association pricing makes a good QPR even better! Enjoy!

  • GQG says:

8/19/2019 6:59:00 PM - While out and about in Napa, on your suggestion, I popped into the Hall tasting room at closing time without a reservation. All of the staff were super friendly and laid back and greased my skids to get me a tasting. I've just posted my thoughts on the 2015 Jack's Masterpiece that I bought that day and which is really delicious. Thanks again for encouraging me to check out Hall.

  • fastcar888 says:

2/25/2019 4:02:00 PM - You have given me some stellar suggestions. Hourglass Estate Cabernet 2016 is available right now. Suggesting you purchase some. It has unique, hedonistic characteristics. It is hard to calculate the amount of money I spend based on your excellent recommendations. But hey... thanks.

10/27/2018 3:10:00 PM - Badmonkey - I need to stop reading your reviews. They make me thirsty which results in more drinking and purchases. lol Thank you for your notes as I find my tastes are very similar.

  • fastcar888 says:

10/17/2018 10:04:00 AM - Badmonkey- your notes are more relevant to me than Wine Spectator, Vinous and (much of the time) Parker. I think you have superior knowledge of the boutique (Quivet, Myriad, Carter, etc.) wines than them. Thanks.

  • GQG says:

8/6/2018 10:49:00 AM - Thanks for the tips! At Envy I'm planning Carter but Quivet would be great, too, as I've been pretty active on both 2016 mailing list offerings. I'm a latecomer to VV/Melka's style but find it extremely satisfying, although pricey. At Bevan I've arranged a deep dive into their library which should be fascinating as their style is also new to me. Read your reviews on Hall and will try to check them out on your recommendation, thanks again!

  • GQG says:

8/3/2018 7:40:00 PM - Hey Badmonkey, think you're somewhere local to me (Birmingham). I'm headed out to Napa in late October with plans to visit Envy, Janzen, VV, Bevan, and ?? Got any tips?

  • Ebartone says:

1/14/2018 9:03:00 AM - Badmonkey, cool to see someone else from the area! We've been here for about 14 years or so, and really like it, but with the kids moving out may decide to downsize. Love your cellar, and definitely hit that '12 Vogt! Ed

  • Screameagle says:

11/30/2017 11:20:00 AM - Badmonkey - looking at your wine cellar we are huge fans of all the wines that Mike Smith and Thomas Rivers Brown make. We also love the Paso wines including the Epoch, Torrin, Law, and Herman Story. We've been on the Saxon mailing list since their first vintage the 2000. We find the Nicora and Ledge to be excellent daily drinker wine. Our first love however is Carlisle. We've been on their list since the 1998 vintage. Have a great trip to Paso.

  • tc from santee says:

9/18/2017 5:14:00 PM - I look forward to trading notes with you. How was the trip to Napa. The next time you head to Napa, I'll give you some great places to visit. I'll be heading to Paso soon, Daou, Epoch, Torrin, Law, Herman Story, L'Venture.

  • Winowhyno says:

6/22/2017 5:39:00 AM - BadMonkey....heading to Napa in late August for 1st time. What wineries can you recommend for 90+ Cab in the $30 to $80 range. I enjoy the Lewelling, J. Davies, Groth, Stumhuler, Ridge, Rocca, Pappilon, etc. Had some Silver Trident recently that was really nice. Looking for those somewhat uknown discoveries. It looks like you have quite a few in your cellar.

  • Queen Bandit says:

5/28/2017 10:11:00 AM - Hey badmonkey....welcome aboard! Looks like you and I like a lot of the same stuff. I may have a few questions for you going forward about some of them. I have not uploaded my cellar on here yet but will be as soon as I can find the time. Take care! Mark

  • BuzzzzOff says:

1/23/2017 7:30:00 PM - Great to be fans, Badmonkey. Wow, you really have some interesting looking Cali wines in your cellar. Very cool as we do not know most of them...we will be looking out for notes so we can learn! Thanks!
