3/4/2023 - thesternowl wrote: 94 pointsI know there are some opinions about the 2018 vintage in Piemonte being less than ideal. And while there may be some truth to that sentiment, great producers managed to make beautiful, classic wines. Massolino falls into that category. In 2018, they decided to forgo bottling their individual crus and instead, focused their best fruit from Margheria, Parafada, Parussi, and the great Vigna Rionda into their “classico”. The results were phenomenal. The wine is beautifully perfumed with ripe, dark and red fruits along with all the roses and tar you expect. It’s the structure, however, that’s most impressive at this point in its youth. The tannins are big, as is the acid, suggesting this will have a long life. I expect this will be winning well past 2038. That being said, it is already enjoyable now. |

1/3/2024 - OenophilistMN Likes this wine: 89 pointsFirst bottle to check on development. One hour decant through a screened and aerating funnel. Already some sediment. Classic young Nebbiolo nose during decant of cherries, cedar and smoked meats. Still pretty fresh. Wine was clear, bright ruby bowl to rim with a small halo. No bricking whatsoever. After resting: nose had not changed. In the mouth: tannins still there, but the wine was drinkable albeit in a juvenile stage. Great balance and wonderful acidity to set off the deep fruit. Palate of tobacco, red fruit and some minerality. Needs time but will definitely improve with age. 7 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

This offers that really crisp and acidic sensation with some very elegant dried cherry notes and a caressing long finish that cleanses and begs for food. Really nice and succulent. This is where the producers have the freedom to blend instead of being pegged to one plot of land. Drink |

7/26/2022 - Xavier Auerbach wrote: 92 pointsA private lunch (Restaurant Ron Gastrobar *, Amsterdam, NL): Massolino did not produce its single vineyard Barolos in 2018, and this (generic) Barolo benefits from being a blend of top-class vineyards such as Vignarionda, Margheria, Parafada and Parussi. Elegant and fragrant yet with good concentration, lovely definition and precision, complex fruit and a hint of cold tea, supple but with just the right level of crunchy tannic grip, zesty finish with roses and excellent length. Youthful charm, good future. |

8/6/2023 - JWS84 Likes this wine: NRTranslucent ruby, the color contrasted with the power is a thing of beauty. This is a wine that demands food at this age, and it’s still just emerging, but it will be exceptional in a handful of years. This is one of my favorite base Barolos, and an incredible value in the $45 range. 6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

4/12/2017 - Tim Heaton Likes this wine: NRStunning. Unlike many of the new release Barolo wines (100+) I have tasted on this extended trip, this has already found its voice, and it's beautiful. Citrus, mushrooms, cherries, forest, soil, ripe cranberry - the list is long. The flavor development lags the aromas at this point, but that's to be expected - this needs some cellar rest. Structured, elegant and rich with finesse and vibrancy. Classy. Now or in the next 25-30 years. recommended 6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

1/27/2021 - Gregory Dal Piaz wrote: 93 pointsInitial impressions: Gorgeous nose, very open and bright with a combination of sour wild berries, soil, tarry minerality, incipient pipe tobacco, a hint of sweet oak spice, all wrapped in gorgeously fresh balsamic aromas. Very taut on opening, lean, salty, and minerality with great length but lacking in generosity, which was not the case with a prior bottle. Nothing is out of place here, it’s very elegant, focused, and long, but the fruit is hiding at the moment. 87-88 based mostly on the nose. Generally hard and austere with tannins that are small scaled but very firm. 6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

9/1/2023 - Lype Likes this wine: NRDay one this showed ok fruit, not as closed and tannic as on might expect from a young Barolo but still. Put the cork back, tasted day two and what a revelation it was. Lovely bouquet with perfumes. The palate has all the usual Barolo suspects, rose petals, tar, black tea, orange peel, stony minerals etc. with a beautiful floral lift, probably thanks to MGAs Margheria, Parafada, Parussi, and Vigna Rionda included in this "basic" blend of Massolino in 2018 - talk about no reason for the consumer to gripe about the vintage. The fresh acidity and non-obtrusive tannin complement this attractive package. More light than big and bold but not the most delicate flower and, yes, there are more complex high brow Barolos out there. Nevertheless, wonder if one can get much higher at this price point in the context of fairly expensive Barolos. |

8/24/2016 - Tim Heaton Likes this wine: NRSo tonight's bottle was rather expressive on the nose, and not too far away from a note I made while visiting the cantina as the wine was being released...except for a touch of balsamic and black truffle. Neither detracted from the wine, but tonight's showing indicated that while open on the nose, the palate needs LOTS of air (I did a PnP...because) or another 5-7 years of cellar rest to turn those triumphal primary notes into seductive and glorious secondary charms. Which is all to say that I was just checking in on it, as I bought two cases at release, and felt it was 'ok' to do so. Price notwithstanding, this is awesome and another reminder that I need to add lots more from this producer. 14,0% abv., thru 2030. HOLD. highly recommended |

3/8/2019 - Tim Heaton Likes this wine: NR{winery} My favorite of the 2015 Cru bottlings. Shows the elegance, power, and structure of the top 2015 Barolo wines at this point, even if it's clearly getting better from here. So much fresh acidity, and complexity, with a flavor profile that kept reinventing itself in the most pleasureable way. As tempting as it is now, at least 2 years of continued rest is advised. To be released in September. highly recommended |

10/25/2020 - Ulveström wrote: 90 pointsPowerful strong tannins. Notes of usual barolo, red fruit, sour cherry, tobacco and all that. But in aftertaste i sometimes taste nuttyness, same feeling as from sherry matured single malt whisky. After 3-4 hours the rose and perfume intensifies in the scent and lifts my rating by two points. Bought 6 of them and will not taste the 5 remaining again for at least 2 years. 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

10/1/2014 - Tim Heaton Likes this wine: NRThis is pretty classy stuff for just $40. Smoky and reductive at first, this takes only a minute to wake up and show what it's got. There's a great freshness on the first attack; the fruit adds some weight and a sense of sweetness as it moves, rather elegantly, to a finely structured finish that shows above-average length and purity. Clean, dry, wonderful typicity. If you're looking for a sweet vanilla milkshake, you're going to hate this. Drink 2017-2035, highly recommended |

6/8/2017 - Tim Heaton Likes this wine: NR{winery visit} A standout wine in a good>great vintage. I've tasted dozens of Langhe Nebbiolo wines since March, when I arrived here in Langhe. Many show good balance, and purity, but they're missing the energy that takes a wine to the next level; this wine has that energy. It's got the structure to age 10 years, no problem, it's also got the beauty, freshness and approachability that makes it kind of irresistible right now. It's the total package, and easily one of the standouts in its category. I plan to buy multiple cases; which probably comes as no surprise to Franco, he saw my reaction. No doubt this will improve from here, too, which says a lot about this wine. highly recommended |

5/25/2020 - Bam_Man wrote: 91 pointsAm taken aback and simply cannot fathom some of the low scores here. This is a beautiful Barbera - made in the Modern style, yet still displays such tremendous elegance and poise. Offers plenty of ripe, delicious plum, cherry and blackberry fruit, with subtle hints of earth, violets and spice. There's wonderful depth and intensity to the brightly acidic mid-palate, and a long, intriguing finish that features a gigantic mineral streak. Deftly balanced. Could easily be mistaken for a very, very good Rioja Reserva. So pure, delicious and food-friendly. Paired wonderfully with the roast chicken that Kerry's mom made for us and we will definitely be looking to acquire more of this. 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

5/18/2020 - Andre Brattland wrote: 95 pointsTraditional yet so seductive aromas with sensual dark powerful fruit, roses, dry ground, tobacco glow, tar and cool herbs. Pretty full-bodied wine with dark power. This is Luke Skywalker in battle against Darth Vader. Inner charm vs power and structure. Delicious tight red berry fruit, orange fruit edge, some anise, boiling tea, tar some herbal notes and wonderful deep salt minerality. Firm tannins is demanding, but the good power eventually wins. Long great finish. This is wine for at least a couple of decades in the cellar. Brilliant wine. 95 points. |

1/22/2020 - Tim Heaton Likes this wine: NRConsistently terrific; for several decades, now. First tasted at VinItaly, then at the winery last month, this is a powerful, deep, highly complex wine that shows elegance, restraint/balance, ideal pick date, etc., etc. However, it's clear that this will need significant time - as in I might have 20 more years, this definitely has that, and plenty more. Do not convince yourself it's a good idea to be curious; HOLD for at least a decade. Their 2012 VRR will be approachable much sooner than this, so if you can find some of those, buy them, they're a half step behind this (and for some/most), will be superior. In the moment, anyway. 14,0% abv., drink thru 2050+. highly recommended to fans of traditionally grown wines. HOLD |

6/26/2021 - Nutty08 Likes this wine: 94 pointsFollowed over 2 nights. Really fantastic young Barolo. Tannins softened on day 2, and while they are behind the fruit at this point they are considerable—but polished and refined. Dark fruit, tar, menthol on the nose and palate. Long finish. Very impressive. |

12/20/2021 - BordeauxBoy Likes this wine: NRGeeez...pulled this wine from my cellar by accident and opened it really without paying attention. Stupid I know. But can confirm this wine is in a dumb stage and needs a lot more time. Good acid overlaying what seems to be plenty of fruit. Gonna guess it's going to be a very elegant barolo vs. a fruit and tannin beast. I'd also say 5 years before drinking widow starts and 10 years before hits peak. |

1/22/2020 - Tim Heaton Likes this wine: NRGenerous, though not blowsy or unbalanced; quite representative of the vintage. I see potential, so I grabbed a few, even if I'll be waiting 3-5 years as this undergoes a necessary evolution that'll likely yield more complexity, focus. Even then, it will need air. Red fruited, classic aromas and flavors, moderate length that's likely to improve. 14,0% abv., drink thru 2037; solid value. recommended+ |
