2024 Judgement of Wimbledon

This year we lined up 16 of the best examples of Grenache we could find. Tasters were a few friends, including Neal Martin, Greg Sherwood, Alastair, DF, and more.

This ranked #13/16 for me, and #1/16 overall.

Noticeably more fruity and forward. It did extremely well in 2023 JoW but was very young compared to other wines in the lineup, which is why I included it again this year. Funny that this time it was very showy compared to other wines that were all very tight.

Fruit forward. Strawberry and lots of florals. Beautifully fragrant. Starts to develop weight and power with aeration. Lovely mineral finish. Stunning wine.

Absolutely incredible, albeit hard to place. Essence of Northern Rhône with wild bramble black fruit. A flintiness you’d associate with the southern Rhône. And certainly a Burgundian elegance. There’s enough precision to emphasise that this isn’t a lost or muddled wine, but rather the result of excellent winemaking. I’d happily drink this without food but in this instance we had it with roast Chicken and it worked really well.

Dufter av varme bær - bjørnebær med litt alkohol og maling. Varm, sødmefull frukt i munnen også, men likevel god friskhet. Saftig munnfølelse, men relativt kort ettersmak. God vin, men ikke veldig kompleks, i alle fall ikke på detet stadiet. Ikke verdt pengene (850,-)

Eben Sadie: The Swartland Revolution (Zoom!): Almost 100% Tinta Barocca. ES says it’s a great grape for long-term wines, and combines some of the attributes of Syrah and Nebbiolo, but has fallen out of fashion. Vines date from 1974.

Much darker in colour than wines #1 and #2, but still definite clarity. A little shy, but obviously clean and immediately enjoyable. Takes a lot of air to get going, but then the similarity to Nebbiolo starts to become apparent: violets, dark berry jam, and a lifted, aromatic quality with hints of things like menthol and caraway.

An impressive wine and by far one of the most undervalued great wines of the world.
Juicy rich, soft waxy palate, bright citrus, energetic and very much full of charm and class wine and one we hunt down on wine lists ( this one at the one of a kind Hunan , London) . A must go to wine and an easy 93 and with a lot of life ahead here.

A blend of Chenin Blanc, Clairette, Colombard, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Palomino, Roussanne, Sémillon, Sémillon Gris, Verdelho and Viognier. A part of Chenin and Viognier macerated with the skins for 4 days; otherwise pressed directly into clay amphorae and egg-shaped concrete tanks in which the wine is fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Aged 24 months in clay amphorae and concrete tanks with a small portion (10%) in 600-1800-liter oak foudres. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after approximately 2 years. 13,7% alcohol, 2,8 g/l residual sugar, 6,5 g/l acidity, pH 3,08 and total SO2 85 mg/l. Double-decanted and left to breathe for 3-4 hours.

Youthful, moderately deep neon-yellow-green color. Somewhat restrained but also very nuanced and complex nose with aromas of perfumed floral tones, some spicy red apple, a little bit of nuttiness, light creamy tones, a hint of peanut butter and a touch of honeydew melon. The wine is broad, moderately full-bodied and wonderfully focused on the palate with a somewhat oily mouthfeel and complex flavors of sweet golden apples, creaminess, some ripe pear, a little bit of buttery richness, light nutty tones, yellow-toned hints of honeydew melon and apricot and a touch of salted caramel. The overall feel is rather big and quite concentrated, but the high acidity shows no problems cutting through and lending tremendous intensity and freshness to the wine. The finish is juicy, bright and rather acid-driven with complex flavors of creaminess, some spicy red apple, a little bit of peanut butter, light pineapple tones, a hint of ripe white peach and a touch of salinity.

An exceptionally beautiful, complex and precise South African white with remarkable sense of structure and an overall character that is still very youthful and vibrant, yet starting to show the first signs of age. The concentrated fruit, creamy notes and evolved nutty nuances intermingle beautifully, while the crisp acidity keeps the whole package in a nice, firm and rigid shape. In its optimal drinking window now, but most likely will continue to evolve for years more, so there's no need whatsoever to hurry with this one. Very highly recommended.

Always such an experience. Soldaat rules... aromas of red fruit, citrus, shiso, roses... supple and smooth, lively, elegant, long and complex, beautiful floral and herbal notes lingering alongside fresh and candied red fruits. So good. This will be worth following for at least a decade.

This was decanted for 6+ hours. I have never found that Soldaat has not improved significantly with lots of air. It's always been good on day two even after long decants.

Lemony , citrus, and mineral wine with dollops of a ripe fruit and honey from the palomino we think which blends well with the firmness of the Chenin. Bright and energetic age 5yrs old and with lots of life ahead. Very solid 92

This is a powerful wine. As many on CT have noted, I think it could age for longer and this is one of those times I wish I had a few more bottles so that I could experiment opening it at different stages in its development.

This has quintessential Chenin flavors of apple skins and peaches with lots of flinty minerality. Instead of rotty fruit, I get a super impressive and super enjoyable waxy, creamy, almost nutty flavor (aged on the lees in oak foudres and concrete tanks with 13.5% alcohol). It reminded me of a white rhone or viognier. The honeyed sweetness is there too (there’s a small amount of residual sugar), but the sharp lemony acidity provides tension and freshness.

Great match with crabcake, good match with shrimp and tomato stew, and decent match with fried fish and fish tacos. Better towards room temperature and needs some air to unwind at this stage.

This is really fantastic and food friendly. I haven’t tried very many expensive vouvrays, but I’d take this over all the ones I’ve tried.

Day 1. Fresh and minty on the nose. On the concentrated palate there’s lemon and green apple too with lots of acidity but the medium+ body keeps it in check. Long and fantailing finish. While this is young, I find this delicious already. (93)
Day 3&4. The mintiness has gone but it’s more expressive overall. Love that finish! (94)

Decanted for ~2hrs prior to serving. This was a "big" wine on all accounts, but also "light/graceful" at the same time! Powerful, concentrated, lots of minerality/extract with ripe yellow fruits... but strangely, it felt very refined & graceful all at the same time. If one can use "power in a velvet glove" on a white-wine (instead of the typical red), this would be it. Will be interesting to see how this will develop with more age.

Tasted blind. Honeyed, pears, lime rind, sweetgrass, flowery nose. Very aromatic! Rich and waxy textured, some alcohol, vanilla candle, touch of oak and a finish that turns progressively bitter. Initial impression is new world Viognier but the texture is too heavy but doesn't seem like Marsanne either. A puzzler, but immensely giving and enjoyable wine.

Eben Sadie: The Swartland Revolution (Zoom!): ES says this is quite a unique wine – both its blend and how it was put together. ES wanted to produce an African wine – not a Mediterranean one. Each plot is separately fermented in eggs and amphoras, so there’s no oak.

A touch reduced at first. An interesting balance of astringent citrus and generous cream. Waxy, saline, full of amplitude, very complex and plenty of potential for development. I might prefer a touch more expression of the wine's Roussanne/Grenache Gris side, and overall rather overshadowed by the Skurfberg.

Zinchester: Had no idea of what to expect from this. On the nose, earthy, with a hint of electricity - damp ground before a thunderstorm . On the palate - a punch in the mouth - there’s a depth and complexity there. My handwritten note says “a portal” - a portal to what I don’t know but it seems right. Violets in an iron glove. This was a serious wine, the kind you’d not want to drink too much of - not because it’s too boozy, or tannic, but just because there’s so much much to it. A real treat.

First from the case. Enigmatic. Opened at cellar temp, decanted for 15 mins and served. On first taste, the flavours were reticent, not like the other Skurfburgs I’ve tried and Sadie wines in general. I first thought there was something off here. However on leaving in the glass for another 15/20 mins, the flavours filled out and the pure white peach, apple and honeysuckle, with a bit of struck match came to the fore. After an hour this was in full flow. Reminder to my future self to decant long in advance and serve closer to room temp to enjoy the full spectrum here. In terms of aging, I see no reason why this will not go further. Acidity is still firm and there are no signs of tertiary flavours on the nose or palate. Will be an interesting case to follow.

The grapes are sourced from a 60 year old parcel (planted between 1958 and 1967) of co-planted Chenin Blanc and Palomino growing on a very chalky soil as unirrigated bushvines. The indicative blend is about 50/50 of each. Vinified in a very hands-off fashion, fermented spontaneously in old oak casks. Aged in old casks and egg-shaped concrete tanks. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 14% alcohol, residual sugar 1,8 g/l, acidity 6,6 g/l and pH 3,2. Double-decanted and left to breathe for 3-4 hours.

Youthful, medium-deep whitish-green color. Somewhat restrained and closed nose with understated aromas of nectarine-driven yellow fruit, some papaya, a little bit of woolly Chenin character, light stony mineral tones and a hint of red apple. The wine is bright, firm and somewhat restrained on the palate with a moderately full body and a taste that is as neutral and mineral as an old-vine Chenin Blanc can be. Crisp yet quite ripe flavors of stony minerality, some white peach, a little bit of apple peel bitterness, light extracted notes of honeyed spice and waxiness, a mineral hint of tangy salinity and a sweeter touch of ripe red apple. The overall feel is rather mineral, but even though the wine is rather neutral - after all, Chenin and Palomino aren't particularly flashy varieties - the wine never comes across as either flavorless or aggressively austere. The textural mouthfeel and quite obvious sense of ripeness keep the wine intensely flavorful despite the lack of obvious fruit flavors. The noticeably high acidity keeps the relatively big body nicely in check. The finish is bright, firm and quite structure-driven with rather ripe yet intensely mineral aftertaste of cool wet stones, some sweet white peach, a little bit of tart green apple, light tangy notes of salinity and a hint of sappy herbal spice. The high alcohol lends a bit of warmth to the aftertaste.

A wonderfully sophisticated, mineral and rather lean Chenin Blanc that feels quite identical to the vintage 2016 that was tasted alongside - although this 2015 feels less reductive and noticeably more ready for business right now. Despite not being Chardonnay, they both have an air of great Grand Cru Chablis to them. The overall feel here is still quite youthful and most likely this wine will need at least another 5 years before starting to reach maturity, but while this vintage was more accessible and slightly more impressive now than the 2016 vintage, I can imagine the 2016 will both outlive this vintage and become even greater in the process. Nevertheless, these are two darn fine wines. Ridiculous value at 25-30€.

Nose displays lots of dark red cherries, viols, blood and bacon. Elegant and stylistically pure.

On the palate though this is downright raw, undeveloped and extremly young. The acid is very much dominating and it's like taking bites from unripe granny smith apples and plums. This is by far too young to even try out. Few hours in the decanter helped a little but did not solve it all. Obvious to me that my remaining six bottles will need at least 10 years in the bottle. Lovely potential though and I'm looking forward drinking this in the future.

South African wines of North London (Must & Lees): Oh boy - pretty obviously the WOTN from the first sniff. Still very dark to look at. Deep nose, with musky, powdery violets, leather, plum, blueberry jam and even little hints of cocoa. Quite beautiful on the palate, effortlessly enjoyable, soft and definitely in the zone. Definitely a wine to share between two rather than twelve :-)

Extraordinary. Cake & Fine Wine (whose score support) articulated it perfectly: "Essence of Northern Rhône with wild bramble black fruit. A flintiness you’d associate with the southern Rhône. And certainly a Burgundian elegance." This wine is delightful with or without food. I'd buy more if I could find it (I live in medieval place where wine is concerned - Toronto, Canada. If one doesn't have connections, one has no hope of securing what one can across the border in New York)

This beautiful and elegant South African kept gaining point after point on my scorecard as it opened up from PnP through a 1.5 hour dinner. The flavors are subtle and elegant. Eben Sadie: The Swartland Revolution (Zoom!): From a very well-drained vineyard, with maritime influence – can be foggy in fall and spring.

Fine tropical aromatics with a hint of honeysuckle and nuts – I drank the wine from a large Burgundy glass and the perfume completely filled it. The balance is again excellent – doesn’t have that screechy acidity that Chenin can be prone to, but there’s just enough steely lemon to balance the sweetness brought by the weight of fruit, and tons of flavour and texture from all that extract. Honey, like an almost-ripe melon, and a hint of marmalade and spice towards the finish. WOTY so far for me.

I was a bit hesitant to try this one as it's an odd blend, then it occurred to me I don't even *like* pure chenin all that much, so, hey, why not see what wonders some blending can do. The non-chenin part is palomino, and it doesn't make it taste anything like sherry, but maybe adds some brightness and acuity. It's a very impressive wine with a super-minerally personality, rock-quarry scents in the glass and a chalky, powdery texture on the front end before turning gentler and creamier on the back. The flavors are very cleansing, pale fruit with a spring-like pomelo and aloe freshness in the top notes with the chenin doing some of its waxy honeycomb thing.
