2008 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs BrutChardonnay more |
12/25/2023 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NROnly had Taittinger Comtes once prior and I don't remember it wowing me; this however certainly did. Chilled, opened, then allowed to warm and breathe for a bit. The purity here is immense. Absolute classic BdB with the intensity turned up. At 15 it still feels like an absolute baby. Bright lemon, green apple, chalk, pastry dough, just a hint of spice and orchard blossom. Silky mouthfeel and lovely mousse. Great stuff. |

8/28/2021 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRThis is stellar stuff, still really a baby though. Opened and decanted for an hour. The nose shows rich and ripe dark plums, black currant, blueberry, spices from oak, hints of cedar, tobacco, and herbs. Stays pretty primary for the whole evening. The depth and concentration on the palate are impressive; it is an elegant cabernet blend, but still feels very powerful; plenty of structure underlying. This should improve for another 20-25 years. |

2013 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon EstateSt. Helena more |
8/27/2017 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRI rarely drink young Cabernet, but ended up in a restaurant with mostly young cabernet on the list; the Spottswoode happened to be at about retail so I decided to try it. It was simply stellar. The nose was a knockout with beautiful dark fruit, spice, earth, hints of vanilla and mocha, but just hints, floral notes, and a touch of herbal notes. The palate was supremely elegant with beautifully silky tannins, nice acidity, and loads of fruit. Just a pleasure to drink and an example of what can be done with some of the fine terroir in Napa. Nothing out of place here. I still think this will be an incredible wine in 20 years so I'll hold those in my cellar, but it was certainly a treat to try young and if you enjoy young cabernet it is excellent. |

2008 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal BrutChampagne Blend more |
10/15/2022 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NROrdered at a restaurant as it was reasonably priced and wanted to try a bottle of this young. Incredible wine, but as many people have noted a baby. The nose was fabulous initially with lemon curd and peach blossom, hints of brioche; over time opened to show fresh buttery pastry dough with a hint of vanilla, orchard blossom, green apple and lemon peel. The mousse and mouth feel was incredible. Super refined and silky feel. However on the finish it tightens up significantly and becomes quite austere. Don’t get me wrong it is incredibly delicious but you definitely feel on the finish that there is a lot left to come from this. What a phenomenal champagne! |

1/16/2023 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRPrum rarely lets me down and this was another very enjoyable bottle. Young, but the fruit and honeysuckle alongside the petrol and crushed rock are just so seductive. Easy to enjoy and will age well. |

4/18/2023 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRThis was excellent if still a touch young; the nose was beautiful with red leaning fruit, mint, some green tobacco, orange peel, and violet. The palate showed lovely pure red fruits with elegance and style, but there were still plentiful tannins. Paired well with a rich lasagna, but probably better in another 3-5 years. If you really want to capture the freshness of the fruit, maybe drink sooner, but I think the balance will be better in a few years as the tannins smooth out. |

2002 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña TondoniaTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
12/12/2016 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRThis is probably the best bottle of 2002 Tondonia I have had. The nose initially has vanilla, dill, and hints of violet. With a little bit of air and warming up from cellar temp it has much more bright red berry fruit, hints of orange peel, dried herbs, dried tobacco, and a hint of leather. The palate has more depth and concentration than my last bottle, but still has bright acidity with supple but present tannins. Really lovely wine. |

12/21/2020 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRVery good, very young and starting to close down. The nose here was open and inviting. Ripe bramble berries, hints of smoked meat, crushed stone, violet, and sanguine notes. The palate is big, with lots of tannins that are starting to close down things early, even with food. Lots of potential, but probably nearing the end of the early drinking window and needs 5+ years to re-emerge. |

2005 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon EstateSt. Helena more |
5/14/2020 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRI had this bottle 9 years ago at a restaurant and it was one of the first truly great wines I had; fun to be able to try it again; served with beef tenderloin and red wine reduction; the nose initially showed a fair amount of oak, but with 30 min in the decanter this resolved and the nose became more balanced; creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, a subtle hint of bell pepper, vanillin notes from the oak, violet, and just a hint of mocha. The palate is absolutely silky with filigreed tannins, ripe voluptuous fruit, and well judged acidity. Despite the density of the flavor, it does not feel heavy at all and there is not really any noticeable heat. A long finish rounds this out perfectly. A great example of ripe (but not overripe) Napa cabernet from one of the best producers. This still seemed very youthful to me at 15 yrs of age and really is still not quite at peak. Should provide another 15-20 years of stellar drinking. 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

7/3/2023 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRFirst bottle of the 2021; still very primary; strawberry, melon, a hint of garrigue and salinity; good freshness, but also with a rich and full sensation; very good, but probably better next year |

10/6/2017 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRSolid Rioja, a bit young for me and still on the upswing; the nose shows dried cherry, dried violet, dill, spice, leather, and dried earth; the palate is a little tight, but still tasty with red fruit, spice, and earth. I think this still needs a few more years of bottle age to hit peak. |

2012 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée RéservéeRed Rhone Blend more |
9/12/2016 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRDelicious, but definitely too young for my tastes currently. The nose is a little closed, but opens some with air. Currant, cherry pit, a hint of red plum, forest floor, and crushed stone. The palate is fantastic, but has years of positive development ahead. Right now there is lots of richness and power, but not much elegance; I suspect however with 10-15 years this will turn into a beautifully balanced wine of finesse. A great wine in the making. |

2009 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon EstateSt. Helena more |
6/1/2019 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRThis bottle was much better than the one a year ago. As a Pinot/Burgundy leaning drinker I found this really to be delicious. Served with grilled ribeye. The nose is classic Spottswoode. Beautiful dark fruit, a bit of spice and tobacco, violet, and a whiff of fresh plowed earth. The palate is remarkably balanced and while it is no doubt a big Cabernet it is fully in the finessed zone of this grape and just flows. I get none of the oak I had a year ago and while still minimal secondary development it is excellent right now. Hard to believe this change is one more year of age but the cork had a perfect seal and the storage has been the same since purchase at the winery. Based on this experience should drink well now and for 20 more years |

2/13/2019 - jnewman77 wrote: NRBrought by a friend to a wine dinner; this was very good, still young, but definitely drinkable now; the nose has dark fruit, menthol, black pepper, a bit of smoke and iron, a whiff of oak. The palate is good, tannins are noticeable, but not prominent and balanced by the concentration and acidity. This should continue to improve for a while yet, but with a good meal is definitely drinkable now. |

4/13/2016 - jnewman77 wrote: NRThis is a classic RRV Pinot; lovely cherry, cola, raspberry, baking spice, and some floral notes. The palate is definitely ripe, but maintains some balance with solid acidity. A bit riper than I personally enjoy my Pinot, but still actually a very solid wine and one of the better RRV pinots I've had in the last year or so. |

2011 Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir Seven Springs VineyardEola - Amity Hills more |
12/9/2015 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRVery good wine and captures both the place and the vintage well. The nose is initially a touch reduced, but brief decanting most of this blows off; there is bright cherry, lots of spice, black tea, and hints of barnyard and saline notes underlying. The palate is tight, acid driven, and a classic example of 2011 WV, but with good flavor and depth. This needs a lighter, earthy meal to show well, but with something like cedar plank salmon or mushroom based dishes will be great. |

10/27/2019 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRThis was excellent. Nose showed crystalline pure red fruits, floral and spice notes, orange peel, tar. The palate is generous but lively with good acidity. The concentration buffers the tannins but on the finish the tannins build and show the structure. Should age nicely |

11/14/2018 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRI really need to stop drinking this because I want to see how it is with some age... but its really delicious. The nose is still open and shows wool, earth, lots of pear, quince, and peach, hints of stone, straw, and honey. The palate is vibrant, yet rich, full bodied, yet lithe, a study in paradox maybe? Whatever it is, its damn good. I'm going to try to forget about the other two bottles I have for 5-10 years.... 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

1/24/2022 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRThis is a baby; but it is good stuff; the nose is exuberant with ripe red and blue fruits, also quite a lot of mineral/stone notes, very floral, and a hint of orange peel. The palate is initially quite fruit forward and super primary, but with a bit of air, this actually tightens up and becomes livelier and more mineral driven. Remains very floral and mineral throughout. Great development potential here. Hands off for at least 5-8 years. 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

9/6/2016 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRBeautiful example of nebbiolo; lovely nose with red berry fruits, anise, tar, tobacco, and floral notes; the palate is lovely and elegant, tannins are not obtrusive, and it finishes beautifully. Drinks a little bit like a pinot given the young vines and less extraction; overall delicious and a great value. |

6/10/2018 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRThis was a fabulous Barolo. Sure it's young, but this showing was incredible. I did open it about 5 hours before drinking. The nose was excellent with lovely red berry fruits, mint, leather, tobacco, tar, spring floral notes, and a hint of mushroom. The palate was better than I expected with the tannins certainly there, but not aggressive or too drying. My first Barolo from Vajra and I will certainly be on the look for more as this was excellent. |

12/14/2016 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRThis is super young, but just killer. I'd certainly hold for now, but had to try one after several 15 moelleux wines. The nose is beautiful with lemon zest, honey suckle, ginger, coriander, poached pear, peach pie, and just a hint of stone. The palate is beautiful with incredible richness and depth, a lovely sweet note that is balanced by beautiful acidity. The finish lasts for literally minutes. Just a stellar wine that has nothing but upside for decades. Wow |

1/25/2015 - jnewman77 Likes this wine: NRReally lovely classically styled Rioja. The nose has tart cherry, cranberry, green tobacco, mushroom, earth, leather, and hints of vanilla. The palate is filled with vibrant red fruit and lots of earthy, gamey notes. The acidity is definitely high and this absolutely requires food to show well. With food it is outstanding. Very good with beef tenderloin and a mushroom red wine reduction. Without food its a touch thin due to the acidity. Very good. |

The nose shows peach, golden apple, pear blossom, lanolin, fresh hay, petrichor, and a hint of stone. The palate is intense, but balanced with lovely energy and beautiful balance. Definitely off dry, but the sweetness is minimal. A long finish. This will go for decades. 4 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |
