Return to Willamette; 7/2/2023-7/8/2023 (Portland & Willamette): Late disgorgement of this wine. It was served a bit cold but opened in the glass. I expected more of the 2008 freshness that you see in so many champagnes but this is a bit more evolved than I would have expected. Reminds me a to of slightly candied lemon peel with just a bit of oxidation.

Return to Willamette; 7/2/2023-7/8/2023 (Portland & Willamette): Totally unfair show stealer for lunch. This was a pnp and just great from the start. Pours with just the hint of a rose tint or something a bit darker. Full out herbal and floral and bright and drinking very nicely. Was intrigued to try as we love the Brochet version and hadn’t had the Savart one in awhile so felt like it was necessary to get a comparison in. Both great wines. Got better and better as it warmed a bit. A wine to be served more in the red wine sphere with a touch of cold but enough warmth to get the full experience.

The last of our 2010s and probably we could/should have waited more on this one. We had a bunch of Washington state from this era and my takeaway is they had a lot more time available. These are closer to 20-25 year wines than 10-15 but what can you do. Still enjoyable and gamey and darker and more intense. Drinks well though.

Return to Napa; 3/6/2022-3/13/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): One of my initial loves when it comes to white wine. This is and always has been the white wine for red wine drinkers. Full bodied, but nimble. Sweetness and flowers and honey and always just delicious. Worked particularly well with a truffle grilled cheese as a pairing.

A bunch of years ago we had our first LGD Rose and absolutely loved it and yet have spent very little time chasing this wine even as we've gotten much more into champagne. Every time I have another one of these I feel like that was a miss. This is great. It's a darker style of rose champagne. Darker fruits, more body, more heft. The kindof wine that almost wants to be paired with a steak or at least a big fatty meat. Really delicious.

Epic Bordeaux for an Epic Birthday!; 9/1/2021-9/12/2021 (Paris & Bordeaux): From a magnum as an aperitif. This is light and fresh and a bit fruity. I wouldn’t say closed down, but it’s very primary in nature. Suspect you would get a lot more if you’d laid it down for 20 years but this was bought to ensure we had sufficient champagne for the trip because who wants to start a meal without champagne?

Great wine. This is one of those ones you can run a whole meal through from early sipper to steak course to dessert (although our bottle went much faster than that). I particularly liked it with the lobster bisque. It's still young and a bit tight but there's balance to it and as it warms up more flavor (to me that's always a sign of a good champagne - if I want it warmer than fridge temp). Very enjoyable. Off the list at JJ's in Jax which is definitely the best wine list we've seen in the area at very respectable (e.g. close to retail) prices.

This was way over the hill. Not even close to drinkable anymore. No obvious flaws, just no vibrance or fruit of any kind. Just hollow and lifeless. So far 3 out of 3 dead old bottles from Envoyer.

This bottle was just drinking exceptionally well. It's in a nice aged spot (prob to me ideal drinking window). Very vibrant and intense, but also more in the secondary and tertiary. More earthy and leather and a bit of the iron ore style.

Birth year bottle on my birthday. Born on a year that sucked everywhere except in Portugal. I was worried because some reviews here seem to imply that this is on the way down. On the contrary, I found it to be alive and kicking, with delicious plummy fruit and great silky texture. Super fresh. I can't believe this is 40 years old. I would have said this is from the 90's. You'd think it has been topped up and recorked, but the cork split in two and I had to fish out half of it with needle nose pliers. Clearly the cork was as old and crusty as I am. Pairing was my birthday cake, which was chocolate mousse.

Acker Holiday Auction (A Voce Madison): We were at Beaucastel last month and the person doing our tasting noted how another set of Americans had said the wine was like horse. He was offended and took it as a bad thing, but I'm not sure it is. I get the saddle leather there. Also red currant and bit pepperish. Tasty.

Day 1, this was tart, thin, and really, really austere. High acid. Tart fruit. Day 2, developed a bit more cherry flavor, spice. Enjoyable but not great. Day 3, terrible. Only tart fruited, high acid, blah. Day 4, down the drain. Really weird bottle of wine.

Poured a medium dark yellow into burgundy glasses. The nose filled immediately with salted churned butter. a bit of acid in the mouth with some herbal notes, perhaps tarragon. Red apple skins, which I get in most of his wines start to appear, then build on the finish and last indefinitely. Long, gorgeous finish never pushing into butterscotch or caramel covered apple, but hinting in that direction. Really fabulous stuff and terrific with rabbit terrine.

Vibrant, fresh aromas with some mineral driven notes. Quite pretty. Tons of vibrant intensity on palate entry, showing lovely fruit and tons of smooth palate texture. Tremendous body. Strawberry flavors, and in the mouth this feels pretty light on its feet. Tart red fruit on the finish, soft melon, and then it dials into explosive acid and green apple skin. Soft and creamy notions linger on the palate despite the cutting acid. Very bright and quite nice. Indeed, one of the finest Oregon sparkling wines to date. Better than most Champagne for the price.

A bit of a mess. Alcohol dominates and the finish is bitter and unpleasant. If there's a flaw it is in the bottle as I took direct delivery from the winery at original release. I tend to think it's just a dark fruited bottling from a warm vintage. Not my style.

  • Comment posted by schwank:

3/19/2015 10:13:00 AM - The final glass on Day 2 wasn't nearly as harsh. Still a bit over extracted but better fruit and less alcohol heat. Still not what I am looking for at the price point.

Popped and angrily poured. Well, the last of my 5 375ml bottle purchase was the worst. A wonderful color of hazy piss-yellow greeted me and I knew we were in trouble. Moldy honey and sherry on the palate. I'm assuming this was pre-mox but who knows. I took a picture and sent it to a friend prompting him to ask, "Why do you have Widmer Hefeweizen in your burgundy stems?" Damn good question. 50-pts.

The Eyrie Vineyards Fiftieth Anniversary Tasting (Portland Art Museum): The nose is magnificent! It mainly smells like a fresh bowl full of caramel corn, somehow doing this without being too heavy. Scents of apple and Asian pear add even more attraction to the experience. It is clean, crisp, and round on the palate. This is on point! Fresh apples and Asian pears show cleanly on the palate. The fruit has a strong sense of purity and depth to it. A touch of dried apple shows as we start in on the finish. Clean and clear acid keeps everything lively, and lasts forever, slowly sinking into the gums on the finish. While the acidity evolves, the great fruit flavors preside on the center of the palate with elegant weight long into the finish. I think this is the best Pinot Gris I've ever tasted!

Drank two bottles about three days apart and both were lovely. Color was deep rose-purple and an elegant nose of deep dark berries, smoke and light oak. Flavors of dark, dark berries, a touch of smoke, a little oak and smooth luxurious tannin. I got these splits at a smoking deal and can't wait to drink them all. I was a bit worried the splits would be over age but they still have years of life in them; well kept full bottles should do wonderfully into 2020.
