My last bottle of the 2004. Served chilled with smoked salmon, capers, fresh dill and chilled shrimp. Pale gold, few and fine bubbles. Very much alive and I think still had some years ahead of it. Well liked by everyone, disappeared quickly.

Golden yellow in color.

Creamy nose of lemon curd and custard. Great acidity, powerful presence with notes of apples, hint of lemons and this lovely creamy texture. Complex wine already. Very young still.

92+pts.

Very good wine. Still has a way to go imo. If you have one or two I would wait as long as you can. Tasts like it will be a 20+ year wine.

Appearance: Clear, medium garnet with slight edge browning. Nose: Clean, medium intensity with developed aromas of dried cherry, cranberry, brown sugar, cinnamon, and new leather - subtle but intriguing. Palate: Dry, medium acid, medium- tannin, medium+ intensity, medium body, 14.5% abv with flavors of dried cherry, tobacco, brown sugar, and cinnamon with a medium+ finish.

Balance: Excellent
Length: Excellent
Intensity: Excellent
Complexity: Excellent

This was opened with 2 glasses poured on day 1 and then stored in a temperature controlled Somm du Vin for 3 nights. I honestly expected this to be DOA on day 4, but it held up remarkably well. While I believe this is fully mature today, it has enough stuffing to drink well for another year or two.

Dom Perignon 1959-2012: Ten wines, eight DPs plus a 2002 P2 vs Moet Collection match-up. A superb tasting. All five 40+ years old DPs showed lively, complex, balanced and intellectually as well as hedonistically appealing. Best wine was the 1976 (97pts) which needed air to blow of some faulty/oxidation notes and reveal all its glorious complexity and freshness. Just a step behind (all 96pts) the hyper complex 1959, an almost young-ish 1975, and the still tight but incredibly fine and promising P2. An odd-ball 1980 (95pts), likely a special bottling with higher dosage, showed like a Piper Heidsieck Rare on steroids. The only disappointments were the very slightly corked 2003 (but showed superb substance underneath) and a badly corked 1990.

TN: Super expressive nose with loads of toffee and caramel. Highly intriguing and inviting nose with some yellow fruit underneath and a quite fresh appearance. Same on the palate with lots of burnt sugar/caramel, toffee, some faint nuttiness and some yellow fruit as well as strong layers of minerality. Still some fine mousse, good freshness and tension but clearly broader and sweeter than DP would normally be. It was said/speculated, that this must haven been a special bottling for a particular market with a clearly higher dosage. It didn’t taste like your typical DP but more like a Heidsieck Rare on steroids. Lots of fun to drink.

Popped and poured. Easy to see why Donelan considers this their flagship; it is excellent. Gorgeous black ruby and extremely viscous. Awesome nose reminiscent of the best Cote Rotie wines, with beautiful meaty, smoky, bacon fat aromas. What a bouquet!!! This is a really fantastic American Syrah, such as few can produce. Age has burnished this to a true beauty. The palate is a match, too. What a wonderful wine. This is one of the few American Syrahs that can match the French for sheer excitement and awe. BRAVO!!! 5-15-18-9: 97/100.

5/11/2023 - Ex-Ray Likes this wine: 90 points

This wine has more potential than current charm. I started buying B.V. Private Reserve with the '68, '69, and '70, which were very open, complex wines with lots of vanilla from American oak. They are now in French oak, which gives a more closed and smoky component. This is dark ruby with aromas of black cherries and blackberries. Flavors are dense and concentrated but definitely tannin over fruit. Currently closed, needs many more years to come around.

This is a good wine, more Chablis character than California. Steady and even throughout, its citrus and white fruit flavors are yet restrained but presented in an elegant way. Perhaps its youth is what accounts for it being so restrained as to feel a hint hollow on mid-palate. Nevertheless, quite a lovely wine and if I were choosing something to hold for ten years, this would be it.

Judgement of Paris Tasting and Dinner (V. Mertz - Omaha, NE): Served blind alongside what was later to be revealed as the 1970 Montrose. Our humble table was universally convinced the other wine was from Bordeaux and there was at least one that was adamant this was the legendary 1970 Mayacamas. What wasn’t up for debate was the nose, which was absolutely stunning. A melange of ripe, dried and desiccated dark and red fruits with dried flowers, leather, sweet tobacco and the prettiest baking spices your nose ever smelled on a Cabernet from California. It was almost Burgundian relative to the Montrose. This is a vinous wine with acid keeping it spry. And while it is likely to give “Ohhs and Ahhs” for years to come, it is so gorgeous right now that I wouldn’t hesitate to pull the cork and taste one of the most important wines in history while it still has its potency. This will be one of those wines that haunt me for years to come and I’m ever so grateful to have enjoyed it. A sublime pairing with Iberico de Bellota pork loin with harissa purée and ramps.

One of the first AP Vin wines I ever purchased, sealed under screwcap. This was incredibly youthful and showed extremely well even though this is no longer my preferred style. Fruit forward and showy, a bit dark and brooding, and brimming with black cherry fruit, accented by a baking spice and loam notes. A bit one dimensional, but it has a bit of a backbone to it, and my only other fault is the high alcohol (14.7%) shows through a bit on the finish. Nonetheless, this was an easy drink and I am impressed how this has held up after nearly 20 years. Bravo, Andrew!

This wine is near perfect. The only other wine I have rated 99 or higher is the 1997 Bryant Family and 2003 Hundred Acre. Dark red/purple color, no browning at all. Nose of dried fruit, cassis and a bit of tobacco. Elegant and balanced on the palate, dominated by well integrated tannins, ripe fruit and a bit of oak. Wonderful mouth-feel, excellent finish. Drink it now, it is elite. (did not decant, opened 90 minutes prior to dinking, poured from bottle)

My first experience with an older Champagne and wow was I amazed, popped and poured over 2 hours with it being best at the end. Still had some carbonation that bubbled off after about 10 mini in the glass, was a bright golden color it looked exceptional. Nose was a little funky at first but after that blew off it had a very delightful toffee and butterscotch scent, flavors were the same with some caramel citrus and pear, had a nice crisp mouthfeel and a long finish. This was outstanding and makes me never want to drink young champagne again if this is what it will eventually become!

Had among several 2012 AP Vin's. Boy do I miss Andrew and his wines. Going to buy as many as I can find in various auctions.

Tonight this wine was the wine of the night. It is the complete deal. It is fruit forward with blackberry, cherry and raspberry all held in harmony in a totally balanced package. The acidity, like other AP's tonight are totally resolved with the sweet fruits coming through. All presented within a dry wine with finishes that are drying and Yet sweet.
