To be honest, I am disappointed. It is definitely a good wine, but I don’t think it stands up to around 90 points.
On the nose, I get surprising unripe characteristics with rhubarb, guava, and gooseberry. There is distant butter and a little bit of nuttiness. Perhaps also faint minerality.
On the palate, it’s full bodied and seems a little too high in alcohol. The malolactic conversion is much more evident now than it was on the nose. There is a little peach in addition to the notes from the nose.
The finish isn’t very long and the most notable are bitterness and alcohol.

The Sixth Annual World's Largest Blind Tasting of American Sparkling Wine (Houston, Texas): Retail $22. 75% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Blanc. Incredible nose of yeastiness and subtle but ripe fruit. Whoa on the palate. Rich, yeasty, complex. Wonderful. Outstanding. 96 Points.

This wine has come along nicely since we last tried it three years ago. Has unwound and added considerable depth and length. Not showing nearly as much of its 15.0% alcohol now, either. So decadent, fruit-filled and unctuous. A broad, wonderful Brunello, that pushes the boundaries of the modern style.

95% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano from Rioja Alavesa (not Alta) aged 24+ month in new American and French oak barrels, 13.5% vol.

Decanted an hour before dinner but this was mutch too short, last sip after an additional hour was the best. On the nose red fruit and black berries with a first suggestion of tertiary notes, the oak seems to be integrated now. On the palate fine tannin, dry with medium acidity, full bodied and long finish.

Rather classic Rioja that requires a lot of air in this phase, I will wait a couple of years with my next bottle.

Deep purple with ripe cherries, leather, vanilla, dill and pepper on the nose. Full bodied with medium tannins and acidity. There is an addition of some smoke on the palette. Medium plus finish. A bit of alcohol towards the end. Much more balanced on the 2nd and 3rd day. Great value for a Ribera del Duero.

Deep ruby red colour, almost opaque, with red brim. Nose is developed, fruity, with oak character and notes of cherries, vanilla, plums, spices, mulberries and a touch of licorice. Mouthfeel is medium bodied plus, with smooth tannins, nice acidity and notes of cherries, vanilla, cinnamon, black currants and some licorice in the long finish.

Classic style of Rioja here, with great fruit and lots of pleasure.

Deep purple/ruby color. Ripe fresh red and black fruit on the nose. Blackberry, raspberry, black cherry. Savory herbs, violets, rose. Thyme, oregano. Pepper. Slight smoke. Wet earth. Hints of oak. A "greenness." On the palate, rich fruit remains, blackberry and raspberry. Herbs, pepper, stone, minerality. Very interesting wine that seems to be a combination of old world non-fruit characteristics w/ new world alcohol levels and spice. Fruit does not dominate.

High altitude Malbec (from two vineyards at 3600' and 3900' in the Andes Mountains). Medium purple color. Offers black cherry, black berry, dark chocolate, clay pot and baking spice. Simple, young and round. Medium-full bodied, velvety texture with succulent dark fruit on the palate, and sweet, plush tannins. Potential, but may be a bit too primary to develop significant complexity.

More pronounced pink than previous vintage.

Firm mouthfeel, with some 'grip'. Some light red fruit, but not dominant. Good depth and persistence, versatile with food. A good example of Provence rose.

Will probably age for a bit too.

Taut and polished across the palate, this delivers more mouthfeel than substance. Dark fruit with a smoky top note offers a generic profile that lacks richness or typicity. Not a bad wine for the price, just not that interesting.

Fresh, juicy red fruit. Light structure with bright acidity. Had high hopes based on other reviews and I must say I’m a bit disappointed. Still it’s not a bad qpr. Probably be better in 5 years.

4th day this was better. Smokey. Finish was very long.

A very nice bottle of reasonably priced Bordeaux. Decanter said 97 Pts. That's a bit optimistic unless the grading is solely QPR. Perhaps a 30 minute decant is called for but it drinks well as a PNP. Nothing bad to say about this wine, for the price, a delightful bottle. I bought a case and will enjoy over the next few years. Age won't hurt this wine but I doubt it will improve it significantly either.

Medium purple color. Smells of plums and blackberries, deep and ripe, with smoky earth, pencil lead, violets and coffee grounds. Medium/full-bodied with a pleasantly chewy texture and medium acidity. Chunks of plums and juicy blackberries, laced with cocoa, cedar, iron and earth. Straightforward but balanced, ripe but nuanced. A blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and others. Great introduction to Douro dry reds at a very attractive price point.

2nd day notes. Deep opaque cranberry purple color. Pretty big nose and taste of vanilla, raisin, cocoa, dates and prunes. Medium acidity but pretty low tannins tho it does have a touch of chalkiness on the finish. Not a fruit bomb but not the flavor profile I prefer and a touch overly sweet and thin. Better QPR choices out there for Napa. About 84-86.

Our first time and very likely last time trying the iconic Caymus. Bought this sometime in 2020 when we were just getting started on the fine wine journey. Caymus seemed like the entry level for novices wanting to get their fine wine on, shining it's seductive $89 price (highest of all the regular wines) out there like a beacon to unsuspecting Costco shoppers. We've had a lot of wine in the last year and a half and a pretty fair amount of very good wine, but very few we both find objectionable. This unfortunately is right where Caymus landed. It's just not our cup of juice. I'd have to say if you have it, hold it or perhaps gift it to the unsuspecting. There are quite a few very good 2018 Cali Cabs. For us, this is not one of them.

An utterly absurd price for a chardonnay that pretends it's a dessert wine. It tastes like a mix between coconut milk and vanilla ice cream and at some point you might get a bit of peach or some other hint of fruit but nothing more. I'd be content if I paid $15 for this instead of $63.

  • Comment posted by tjtrot:

9/1/2021 6:25:00 PM - 60 is a score deserving of a wine that is spoiled, or otherwise deeply flawed and undrinkable...does not seem to be the case here. didnt you react emotionally to a wine you simply didn't like and paid too much for ?
