2001 Château Cos d'Estournel

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/20/2024 - Willi Vinotti Likes this wine: 93 points

I had my issues with bottle quality and cork consistency some years ago, but the remaining bottles Of this 2001 are now getting better and better. This one again a step up, with tannins now starting to be fully melted, succulent salinity outbalancing the ripe sweetness of this classic St estephe and spice and forest floor notes making the bed for a lingering finale. Great wine in the right place at the moment. An hour of decant benefits the wine.

A very fishy looking bottle from auction. My case still pristine I thought, well you know , let’s try the new one. Label looked like it spend time in a submarine but cork was perfect. And then that wine … i sure have a problem with quite some 2005, but certainly not this one! Not muted or reductive, just plain explosion of classic Bordeaux, nicely balanced cabernet and merlot, all ripe to perfection, and sublime poise, with melted but vibrant tannins, superbe flow, crispy fruit on blackberry, cloves allspice and, do i really say that, banana…

Excellent saint Julien, still powerful, and a delight to drink now. I would ignore future improvements and go for it. Though it feels like a long distance runner with easy some 15-20 years in the tank.

Ok, nice. Super closed. Used aveine aerator, nice results opening this beast a bit more. Did not see any immediate pleasure without it and saw some light at the end of the tunnel after using it. I need to say that there is absolutely no pint buying these wines for the current price point (250eur). Strictly speaking a cerebral wine, interesting maybe, but not worth the effort. 2005 anyhow not a target for auction buy, this echezeau is in the category of other burgundies that have potential, but also a potential to never show up.

As i think by now that life is too short for this type of efforts, i will discard this from future buys, though will report back on the remaining bottle if it changes in the future!

What a wonderful, plain wine. No added pieces, no chemistry, just the fine balance of Claudia Ferrero wines, slightly on the smoky, garrigue side with plenty of red fruit, complemented by earthy notes. A dream of a Rosso.

2020 Château Haut-Marbuzet

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

11/23/2023 - Willi Vinotti Likes this wine: 90 points

This is a very good Haut Marbuzet, it took long time to open, and at this stage it started to fully sing two days after opening. Before, it did not seem to be very well together and was quite edgy and hard. After that, the wine showed very nice and typical aromatics, some cherry, blackberry, tobacco and coffee notes all nicely layered and medium long.

The bad news: for this to be ready, count 15-20 years. By then i would expect the rating to increase.

I wish I wasn't so anxious and had planned better. I had my last half glass watching the Cowboys get beat and that was 2 hours after I opened it. It kept on getting better.

Best bottle I've had from my cellar in a year. First 97 rating ever from me.

A nice bottle in a good restaurant. Though not mind boggling or even close to what Brunello can deliver. Relatively tannic for the year, and not that aromatic as the best bottles are in this vintage. Aromatically not a supremely intense effort. But still, nice to drink, opening up in the glass and a valuable food companion.

1/15/2023 10:25:00 AM - Hello Garrigue, yes it had a decent decant of about 2 hours. It developed ok during that time, i did not have the feeling that it needed much more air. During the course we drank it with and after until the end of the evening it remained the same.

2016 Hubert de Boüard Le Sauvignon

Bordeaux Sauvignon Blanc more

9/4/2022 - Juliansi Likes this wine: 88 points

Hubert de Bouard is the co-owner and winemaker at Château Angelus, and makes this low production Sauvignon Blanc (circa 2,400 bottles per year).

Floral nose, lime and minerality with plenty of citrus freshness on the palate. Best of all the finish is super pleasant with a medium-long length too.

It is grown on sandy clay and limestone, in a small 3-4 Ha plot. Aged completely in barrels with 2/3 French oak, it never comes across as overly vanilla-esque or creamy.

This is now becoming awesome. An outstanding smoothness, velvety tannins, still ambitious fruit and wonderful plush length, a st Emilion far beyond expectations. The length and expression is just a tribute to the exceptional vintage. Smokiness and fruit, earthiness and minerality are just so spot on right now! Marvelous.

Etter noen timer i karaffel er dette helt magisk!
Sexy pinot-parfyme, spice, edelt treverk, og lekker rød bærfrukt.
Radaren plukker opp Musigny-vibber her.
Fantastisk vin!

There may have been something 'off' with this bottle, as when I opened it, the end of the cork had an odd, grey color and felt slimy. We decanted it for about 2 hours. The aroma seemed ok, but the flavor, if you could call it such, was acerbic at best. Not totally undrinkable, but little to recommend it. I waited several days, trying it again each day. No real change. I have one more bottle. Hopefully, that will be the experience I paid for.

  • Comment posted by Willi Vinotti:

This seems to be a wine of contrasting opions with some people loving it with others luke warm. I am definitely in the former camp and think it is living up to the initial plaudits at release. The last 8 months has seen it really move into its drinking window, and this is now drinking with a couple of hours in the decanter. The nose is tremendous and deeply aromatic and sensuous packed with ripe red cherry and red berry fruits with additional floral notes. The palate is deep with a rounded mouthfeel, with the tannin resolved. The finish is lengthy, but there are still astringent notes at the tail-end, and to be honest is the only barrier to giving this an extra point or two. 94+

This blend of Sauvignon and semillon is a classic white pessac, with tons of white fruit, mango and pineapple, minerals, flint stone and some seaweed. Absolutely delicious at this price point, a classic not to be missed. Give it an hour of air time before drinking, it just develops so nicely after this. Enjoy!

Coming well together now. Drinking alongside Haut Marbuzet 1998, it shows tremendous youth and potential to be kept decades in the cellar. though approachable and drinking nicely with food now.

@jenmermaidia, the Haut Marbuzet was wonderful. Fully integrated tannins by now, so soft drinking, yet focused and dense, full of cloves dark berries and licorice on both palate and nose. An an absolutely hedonistic wine that pairs brilliantly with food (we chose NZ lamb to with it… ).

Youthful, deep, rich and powerful, the wine is full-bodied, intense, aromatic, rich, lush, long and youthful. The spicy, ripe fruits taste and feel great as they fill your palate. However, it is important to note that the wine requires another 3-5 years in the cellar before it fills out, softens and really comes into its own.
