2017 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets

Domaine de la Pousse d’Or has existed in one form or another for nearly a millennium—stretching all the way back to the famed Dukes of Burgundy. The history can be seen beneath the vaulting stone ceilings of the ancient cellars the brick floors are literally worn down from hundreds of years of cellar work. In 1997, with the purchase of the domaine by Patrick Landanger, a new moment was begun in the winery’s long history. Landanger farmed the vineyards organically from the start and then, from 2014, biodynamically. Patrick’s son, Benoit, took over the estate in 2023 after his
father’s passing. He is as much a passionate experimentalist as his father. The domaine’s name was originally La Bousse d’Or or “golden earth.” Pousse comes from the French phrase “Ça pousse” said at bud break to capture the urgent energy of the new growth. At one point in the domaine’s history it held the famed vineyards of Romanée-Conti and Clos de Tart and at that time the owner held the holdings in Volnay
with the same reverence. The wines are known for aging a tremendously long time. And despite the wines pedigree and history, they remain an incredible value in Burgundy. The wines are crafted as naturally as possible. All the juice is moved with gravity. Wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered in sync with the lunar calendar.

En Caillerets is one of the Volnay 1er cru that many think deserves to be recognized with grand cru status. In their (mid 19th and early 20th century) rankings of Burgundy’s terroirs both Dr. Lavalle and his successor Camille Rodier recognized this vineyard in their surveys as tête de cuvée, their highest ranking. The vineyard is beautifully exposed to the southeast,
sloping mildly with a mix of limestone and marl, with large stones in the soil which hold warmth and help the site drain. This has sour red cherries and black
raspberries, red plums and a shelf of stone beneath it all. It is held in a cool wind of mint and cinnamon.

FOOD PAIRING
scallops wrapped in speck, celery root puree, red wine braised endives / braised lamb, nettle and black trumpet mushroom crostata

SERVICE NOTES
Coming from the cellar of Pousse d'Or, this wine is lovely right now. No decanting needed. Serve it a touch cool to start.

For those receiving both the barrel-aged and the apmphora-aged versions of this wine, I highly recommend opening them up at the same time so you and your guests can experience the differences and similarities the aging vessel brings to the wine. Or you can get a jump start on your aging and tuck it away for another 5- 10 years.

01024. Intense rose petal, soaring hawthorn red fruit, lychee, ripe blue fruit, earthy, quite meaty, muddy, horse piss, lots of spice, dried chili powder, citrus and tropical acidity, orange flowers, vanilla and bakery spice. So ethereal and lifted to the best of tradition, with notable hint of rough even burnt tannins of Volnay. Such density and strength and so sweet. Old school winemaking at its best. 94-95+

Dark robe. Medium to full body. Nice balance and complexity. Evolving nicely. Enjoyable now but definitely improving with more age so the secondary notes emerge further.

Haven’t tasted this since 2021. My last bottle of this vintage and patience was rewarded. Noticably more mature than my last experience. Lovely aromas and wonderful finish with a great balance between fruit, earth, minerality, and acidity.

Really good today, but I think there is still an upside.
14 is a really great vintage for white burgundy, but they takes time to really come to their best.

Open the bottle in a birthday party. Very quiet and closed but leak enough scent of cool white flower all over the glass bowl, very elegant. After almost two hours the wine start to build-up powerful almost forceful but well behave nose of complex bouquet of white flowers white tea and scent of white stone fruit here and there but in a luxurious style. When this come to palate the scent of flowers had confirmed it’s presence and transformed into sweet taste. The sweetness almost feel like honey with just right acidity but conceal under a buttery coat. The aftertaste was unbelievably very long explosive and pleasant finish. A lot of taste that cannot described into words. How can I describe the ambience of the MoonLight Sonato perform by a great pianist in words. A legend.

Also memorable wine in this flight :- Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru "les Saint Georges" 2019

2009 Pousse D'Or Clos D'Audignac Volnay

Purchased on release; enjoyed Friday March 22, 2024
45 minute decant
Deep ruby color with slight lightening at rim. Expressive bouquet of black fruit and sous bois. Rich, aged, succulent fruit, excellent balance, soft tannins, and 10+ second finish.
A really enjoyable Volnay 1o Cru with all the characteristics of the 2009 vintage on full display. A lovely wine from a really good producer.
In a perfect spot now, and still has 5+ years of drinking pleasure ahead.

Freshness and salinity on the nose. Limited fruit aromas at first.

Fairly light body. Plenty of acid present, but not overwhelming. Largely integrated, yet fine tannins still very much present. Some residual heat on finish.

Not a ton of complexity at cellar temp, PnP. Darker, but not ripe, fruits on palate

A lovely, ripe Puligny showing a concentrated, precise lemon, yellow stonefruit, melon etc with lots of butter and toastiness and some subtle honeysuckle and stone on the end.

Great balance and structure. A real quality 1er Cru Puligy and paired wonderfully with the food at Artemis in Singapore. Great to drink alongside and contrast to the 2018 Lafon Puligy Champgains.

Adventures in Ginza: Second time having this vintage from Pousse d'or and a different plot but still an incredibly great experience. From the get go this was firing with rose water, cherries and pomegranate dominating both the bouquet and the palate. Great purity of fruit with concentration and persistence, following up with immense sensuality and silkyness. Provided provenance is solid, this still has a good 5-10 years of life down the road but why wait for something that is already so great?

I too thought this wine is a bit modern in style, but very enjoyable. I also found it a bit reserved on the nose, fruit hidden behind slightly damp forest floor. Lots of fruit comes at you on the palate, and then minerality and well-integrated tannins dominate the finish.

Medium dark red. Youthful cherry bouquet. A little monolithic in the mid-palate. Still a little young. For Volnay, a little mute. This needs more time, but excellent potential.
