2019 Sanguis Songs Without Words

Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon more

Light to medium bodied. Red fruit abounds, bright cherry, sweetened strawberry, red licorice, mint leaves, slight Luden's cherry cough drop. Not your typical Cab Sauvignon, but very enjoyable.

Central Coast Chardonnay Blend, Chardonnay more

I really enjoyed this wine, a wonderfully rich and complex bottle. Displays a medium dandelion yellow color that foreshadows its layered texture. On the nose, I’d almost mistake this for a grand cru Burgundy with its nose of burnt caramel, white flowers and perhaps even a hint of ocean breeze. The chardonnay is nicely restrained here which gives the wine structure and backbone, while the roussanne adds an elegant flourish of fruit - a combination that works so well I question why it’s not more typical. Lengthy finish given above noted richness ends with just a hint of petrol. Definitely one to age and I’m guessing will be even more delicious in five years, maybe deserving of 95. I have one bottle left, so we’ll see!

This wine outkicks its price point and is ready to go at this young age. Strawberry, anise, mild blackberry. Very smooth. Nice wine.

Consistent with others’ notes. Golden color, aging nicely. A round, layered style of white, as one would expect for Roussanne and Chardonnay from barrel, yet has great freshness, doesn’t feel ponderous or cloying.

Drink or hold, probably best at cellar temperature.

Delicious. Interesting color in the glass between Starbright lemon and golden, moderately aromatic with yellow fruit and blossom, palate is dry, complex and integrated, ripe stone fruit leads with nectarines and a bit of apricot, melon, apple, sweet citrus bit of zest, lemon cream, acidity is bright, body medium +, finish will not quit. Happy we have another bottle in the cellar.

This wine seems to be an attempt at a rhone field blend + Chardonnay for good measure. I did bot care for it. There is a bitter medicinal finish a bit like aspirin. Not for me.

A WTSO special. Great complexity and finesse to the flavors. You can almost taste the individual varieties. Really unique.

Color. Rich gold and yellow.

Nose. Honey, melon, apples, straw, lemongrass.

Palate. Straw, honey, oak.

Very interesting wine.

PnP, doesn't need much air, even at this young age. Pleasant wine, pretty Grenache notes up front of strawberry, cranberry and cherry. Telltale pepper from Syrah on finish, with some blackberry in the background.

This is a medium straw-yellow colored, hazy wine. The flavors are somewhat varietal of Roussanne and Marsanne with some lemon, apricot, and tropical fruit. The finish is flinty with some bitterness. The body is medium with an austere structure. This is a good wine, but it's not up to par with the good quality Rhone whites.

Decanted 30 minutes before service. In the glass, a soft gradation from clear orange-red at the rim to a deep crimson at the center. On the nose, a burst of cherries with reticent herbal elements in the background. On the palate, leaning heavy with the fruit, skirting close to fruit bomb territory before acidity, minerality, and some residual tannins kick in to save the day. A Central Coast pinot that could easily be a ringer for RRV.

2 hour decant; deliciously savory red and black berry fruits, pepper, saline, hints of seaweed and oak barrel. Finishes strong and long, with dark chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Great stuff only just entering its window, so no rush to open these. Drink now with air - 2032+.

Decanted 20 minutes before service. In the glass, clear, light-medium gold. On the nose, peaches, honeysuckle, and smoke. On the palate, a core of peach, plum, lemon, and honey, hinting at sweet fruit, before a wave of acidity, bolstered by oak, comes in to balance things out, and that balance is quite pleasing on the long, smooth finish. I wish I had a few more bottles of this.

2014 Sanguis French Books

Santa Ynez Valley Cabernet Franc more

1/13/2024 - hrazdiiv Likes this wine: 94 points

This is a beautiful, well structured wine. Comes out of the bottle with a medium-dark crimson red. Initial nose is almost savory, with charcoal, tobacco, maybe even some roasted game. After about 30 minutes in the glass, some of the subtle dark berry fruit starts to make an appearance. But the wine never lets you forget it’s a Cabernet Franc (85%) and retainers a wonderful earthy typicity throughout. Firm, chewy tannins provide an excellent backbone and structure. Loved it to the last sip, and is the most original American wine I’ve had in a year. Superb, interesting wine making at Sanguis. Drank undecanted.

Pop and pour into a decanter. In the glass, very dark purplish-red. On the nose, blueberries lead the way, followed by fresh ground pepper, honeysuckle, roses, and a hint of peach. Even if I hadn't read the other tasting notes, this is clearly a co-fermented blend (which Sanguis does very well, and which I love - such fun wines). On the palate, a cool burst of dark berries on the attack, followed by a wild, not particularly integrated mix of fruit and almost-funky floral notes. I kind of agree with every other taster's notes, but I think I'm closest in spirit to Quiet Lion's note - treat it like a delicious cocktail wine. It's a wild thing, and I wish I had a case of it.

An unusual profile, with notes of Granny Smith apple and coconut commingling throughout. Minerality builds as it warms, with hints of wet stone weaving in, and just enough acidity to keep it moving. The oak is overwhelming here, but somewhere under it is an interesting wine.
