Wow this is a different wine! Grapefruit, vanilla, citrus flowers, it's really unctuous too. This is something else!

decanted for a few hours - still could have been opened longer, but showed lovely floral notes and a honeyed tone to complement the dried peach and pear notes.

Affirmation that SQN Grenache may very well be my favorite wine. Brown sugar is what I remember most.

Very similar descriptors to the previous notes listed. I absolutely love this wine. My love for the SQN whites started all the way back with the '97 Twisted & Bent.

Obviously this is not the wine for everyone, but if you like the SQN whites, this vintage is above average, in my opinion and I'm very glad I sprung for 6 bottles. As noted below YMMV. Cheers!

Decanted for one hour. Nose of ripe blackberry, smoked meat, dried herbs, anise and vanilla. Blackberry, gamey meat, dried herbs, mocha and anise on the palate. Very long, layered finish with excellent depth. Full bodied. Drinking beautifully! Served with hickory smoked, reverse seared rack of lamb and garlic herb butter.

Really a beautiful bottle of wine, with an unexpected blend that offered a rich, round, layered and full bodied experience, with a bright lift at the finish, and a pleasant evolution throughout the evening, while being enjoyed with a variety of foods during a multicourse gourmet meal.

upon opening it was tight and opaque in taste, but changed pretty early on .... think it needs a decant in bottle 30mins on ice ..

pour sip and let it unfold as the temp rises ever so slightly.

End result over many various unfurls - orange peal, lemon drop, brioche apricot honeydew - just goodness

Another Wine gathering at RJ’s; 4/4/2024-4/7/2024 (Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina): Expressive nose displaying concentrated sweet red fruit, chocolate dipped cherry, strawberry jam, a hint of blackberry liqueur, light caramel, licorice, beef blood, sweet spices and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of opulent red fruit, rich yet silky and fluid, bright acidity, medium mineral, and a long concentrated red fruit driven finish. Although super concentrated, this seems light compare to the Ode to E.

Another Wine gathering at RJ’s; 4/4/2024-4/7/2024 (Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina): Served blind, the fruit is dark and super concentrated. Jim guesses Syrah but I am thinking that this is a mature Maybach. Explosive nose displaying concentrated sweet black fruit, blackberry liqueur, licorice, baked blackberry, fig, ink, mocha, vanilla/oak, caramel, liquid smoke, black pepper, dark spices and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of super concentrated rich black fruit, rich and opulent, round, sweet and warm, medium acidity, not much mineral, no noticeable tannins and a long opulent concentrated black fruit driven finish. I noticed a hint of heat. The oak expression is still strong. This is a big scale SQN. With air, the Syrah expression of pepper and grilled meat is more evident. Although I enjoy the wine, the others love the wine even more. I actually prefer the Atlantis for the red fruit expression and strong acidity. If you are a fan of SQN EBA, you may find this wine to be perfect.

Frey's Cat Ranch (Somewhere in the Northern Burbs, MN): Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 20 minutes. Drank a glass over an hour. Fantastic nose with savauge, bacon fat, cured meat, aromatic, floral, black raspberry, black berry, black pepper, and licorice. I really love the nose, but the palate is nice too, a bit sharp on the back end, but impressive nonetheless: Big, ripe, palate staining purple fruits, plum, blackberry liqueur, Tart cherry skin, gravelly minerality, so savory, lacquer, long but a touch edgy on the finish. Outstanding.

Slow-ox for 6 hours. This is a well-made wine. Okay, now to the other stuff. . . .

This is not teally my cup of tea. Oooh, let me continue that thread: the palate is full of over-steeped tea. There is a brightness here—it is Grenache—but it’s morphed into this Hulk-like thing that I can’t wrap my brain around. Each sip I kept thinking, “This is a world-class wine, why don’t I dig it more? Let me ponder.” So, intellectual box: checked. Pleasure box? (Oh, dear.) Um, no. No, my pleasure box was decidedly not checked.

In looking over my notes for the Distenta I Grenache, I think I need to drink up any SQN Grenache I have on the early side. Flip side of that coin, I like the SQN Syrah later, methinks. I also plan on throwing any loose change I have in my couch or the car ashtray-like receptacle at SQN Syrah exclusively.

Initial notes of smoke and charcoal past that you get dark raspberry, roasted herbs, red currents, spices, white pepper. Notes of dark cherry, smoke, leather, brambleberry, slight spicy finish on the palate. There is some heat on the very long finish.

Dark yellow/golden in appearance
On the nose it has a perfumed floral note and touch of sweetness. (reminiscent of a white rhone varietal)

Rich and deep on the palate, spicy, intense. oiliness. Full-bodied. Touch of heat on the finish.

Bit of time, and warming up, starting to get a broader more unctuous character on the palate. Burnt caramel on the end/finish. Like the burnt sugar on a crème brûlée.

An intellectual experience. Not my preferred style, but unique. Strange to think this is even Chardonnay.

Decanted for 30 mins (mostly to get rid of sediment).

Love this wine! Awesome nose, palate and texture....everything I love in a SQN! Nose is complex, with floral, dark fruit roasted meats, some earthy notes and some iron. Palate showed lots of dark fruit coupled with notes of blood, bacon fat, spice, earth and forest floor. Texture is silky and the finish goes on and on. This is an excellent wine and still youthful at 19 years. This style and wine are totally in my wheelhouse! Easy 96+ to 97 for me. Drink or hold.

Just outstanding. Brought to a wine dinner by a generous friend.

Incredible nose of blood, iron, cured meat, game. Palate had tons of structure and minerality with iron earth overlaying savory fruit. Finish shows off some power and the structure again.

This should go another 20-30 years without problem. Pretty remarkable.

Absolute perfection. Decanted for three hours. Very Côte Rotie with smoked meat, black pepper and blueberry capote; along with brown spices and slight lilacs. Tertiary nuances abound, and nay a hard edge. The body is full and yet very agile at the same time. Finishes exceptionally long and is a very masculine Syrah from start to finish. A very complete and round middle palate, with slight silky tannins. Black as night, with a gorgeous garnet rim. Up there with Stockholm Syndrome (2010) and the 2019 Eleven Confessions, which were also perfect to my senses. This will evolve for many years, yet will not improve. If you have this, no harm in opening a bottle now…then study for many a year. Drink now -.

Peach, papaya, cantaloupe, beeswax, vanilla, cardamom pod, coriander. It's a rich, unctuous wine. Even with it's high alcohol it maintains balance, and doesn't feel too hot. This feels like a feat at 15.3%. We tried from 4 different glasses to compare, and preferred a burgundy stem by far. Great wine!

This is absolutely unbelievable. The vines were planted in 2001 and by 2003 they were producing Syrah of this quality. Also, this has aged exceptionally well. Such a siren to all things Syrah. It is really something, there’s smoked meat, peppercorn, blueberries, camphor, hope chest and wet earth. Full with body and a slight silky tannin remains, with a finish that glides along without effort. Drinking well within its window and shall hold on for many years; truly an experience. Not too ponderous, and not too tame. Such a long, satisfying finish. The body is quite full. Drink now - 2033.
