A private dinner (Wine Bar La Cuverie de Vosne-Romanée, Vosne-Romanée, France): Very fresh and floral - reminds me of the style of Charles Lachaux. Not as lifted and more chalky as that Aligoté, but certainly not the reductive style so en vogue these days.

Followed over 2,5 hours.
A lot of VA on the nose, but otherwise a nice mixture of cranberry and cherry sauce, dried rose and thyme. On the palate the wine is a fresh, juicy and easy to drink, not complex or long, but with its overt fruit profile of fresh raspberry and redcurrant it makes for a lovely lunch wine. For me personally, this was quite boring and the super high VA makes it feel quite disjointed.

A private lunch (Wine Bar La Cuverie de Vosne-Romanée, Vosne-Romanée, France): From vines in Vosne-Romanée owned by Domaine Comte Liger-Belair and vinified and bottled by the estate. This really displays some of the silky, smoky, generous but ultra-refined house style, with a whiff of Asian spices, flowers and sweet but fresh fruit, papery tannins, wonderful flowing length with a touch of wood. Village quality easily.

An energetic style for this hot vintage, crisp and steely, floral, lovely varietal typicity, nice touch of warmth from the wood, delicately grippy bitters, dry and appetising finish.

Amazing it was still alive with no oxidation. A wonderful example of old white burgundy. Did fade after a while but came back again for a second life.

The cork was so stiff which raised our suspicion if it was a fake bottle. The color and taste of the wine aligned with its age. It still retained fruit and acidity. It could be an old burgundy, old barolo or old beaujolais. Louis Michel confirmed that the bottle was a fake when he saw the photo. The merchant acknowledged the mistake and fully-refunded the bottle.

Fully mature intense complex aromas. On the palate considerable richness and depth, with balanced round soft tannins along with quite a bit of supporting acidity to prop up the dark cherry, smoke, tobacco, earth and leather flavors. Sourced from a perfect private cellar, this is a fabulous showing!

Good funk and spice on the nose with ample damp earth underneath. Earthy notes and black plum on the palate, although overall less intact than the nose. Alive and representative but quite sedate at this point

This bottle of 1949 Musigny was on great form, bursting from the glass with an exquisite bouquet of dried roses, autumn leaves, beetroot, roast meat and chocolatey soil tones. On the palate the wine is broad and expansive, its tannins fully melted, but pure and true through the finish. Contemplative stuff.

I checked in on this bottle in the cellar and it had been leaking quite badly. Time to crack it after 100 years. Quite a volatile nose coupled with some earth and soy notes. Still has vinous sweetness but is not really a pleasant drink.

Very good bottle. Good filling, nice cork. AB-stand.

Nice colour. Red with an orange hint. Clear and pure.

Tea, spices, mature and complex fruit. The wine needed some air and reveals itself after 4 hours. Cherries, wild strawberries and lingonberries, autumn leaves and still a bit floral.

Very elegant on the palate. Everything in balance! Lovely silky tannins, still lively fruit, some cherries, a hint of wild strawberries, a bit meaty and salty. Good mineral and lovely acidity.
Long finish.

Just a wonderful Richebourg :-)
I bet this wine will live for another decade or two.

Bløt, men fokusert frukt med flott intensitet og kraft. Ren og elegant. Nydelig frukt! Spiss, frisk syre. Tørr, men fruktintens utgang med et svakt brent preg. Flott lengde.

Rare Wine Dinner (Sydney, Australia): Fantastic nose of earth, sour red cherry, autumn leaves, stems and a undercurrent of florality. The palate had lovely complexity and texture, while still having a woven core of red fruit and acid lifting the wine. A terrifically appealing and balanced wine across all its elements.

Pale fruit and perfume nose with an interesting array of spices when first poured. The spice and perfume dissipated within minutes, leaving a bit of harshness and old kitchen sink on the nose, but the palate held well, with elegant, frail fruit, some bottle sweetness, touch of mineral, hint of creosote; A fine and pleasant wine.

Cork fully saturated, rotten on bottom without affecting the wine. Successfully extracted with the new Durand device made especially for fragile ancient corks. Very powerful for old Burg, its aromas filled the room during decanting. On the palate, big and rich and long, quite atypical Burg in that roasted 1947 way, yet there is another element, something foreign -- was this wine "balanced out" with something other than grand cru Pinot? Drinking beside its perfect match, the same producer's 1949, made this a very salient question. Where the '49, also a hot vintage, is pure, classic, characteristic Musigny, this one could almost pass as old Hermitage. In short, an extremely fine, thoroughly enjoyable, fully mature drink, but not one that makes you think "Musigny" or even "Cote de Nuits grand cru."

Just a pure Musigny from maybe the greatest postwar red Burg vintage. Pale color, like so many old grands crus it gains weight and power as it stretches its long-confined muscles over time. Drunk beside the initially showier 1947, it ends up on top. A bottle in perfect condition.

A very well-stored bottle. Extraordinary color of light ruby with no browning which is amazing for such an old wine. Classic old Burg nose of haunted forest and old wood. Lovely cherry-barnyard flavors along with a taste of ancient wood. The texture is quite silky and the finish is finely complex. There is firm acidity which is just a bit overpowering but that's splitting hairs for what was a wonderful opportunity to taste such an old Burgundy in such fine condition.
