dark purple color with nice transparency, pretty fragrance, showing wafts of flowers, raspberries, strawberries and wet stones, dark and pure, clean and fresh, lovely hints of raspberry, plum, red cherry and hibiscus tea on the palate, even some chocolate bark on the finish, pleasant with balanced acid, smooth tannin and a long finish, the weight is just right, overall juicy and pure, really nice value

Einfach grandios - unbeschreiblich. Heute geöffnet. Mal schauen, was die nächsten Tage noch so bringen. Kann sicher noch mindestens 5-10 Jahre in der Flasche, die noch ungeöffnet im Keller liegt weiter leben.
It smells like fig, prune, raisin, walnut, botrytised, molasses and sherry. It tastes like fig, prune and raisin. The body is medium/full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

Drinks stronger than 14.5. The dark and brooding side of grenache. Mineral and earthy notes on the nose. On first open perhaps a touch heavy on the so2, but gone by second pour. Would gladly accept and drink if offered; undecided on whether will buy again.

Delicious. Medium garnet in the glass, moderately aromatic nose dried fruits and cacao, medium sweet, plum, mission fig, nuttiness, cacao, hint of dates on the back, acidity is medium +, full bodied, finish for days. First Banyuls yummy.

85 pts

Garnacha (Grenache), Carignan, Syrah.
Dark garnet red. Big fruity nose: figs, prunes, velvety liquorice, tomato paste, mentholly cedar.
Very soft tannins, medium-full to full body; fruits as above, some dry rose petals.
A lovely wine.

A little young. Effervescent upon first pour. Behind it is a viscous and heady Mourvèdre, with some salinity.

On the nose a lot had a slight reductive not, but blew off quickly with more air. This wine is surprisingly light for a wine that is 15% alcohol. Cherry, cranberry and even some boysenberry notes with a good dollop of fresh herbs. Shows no heat at all, even with the high level of alcohol. Elevated body with medium acid and tannins. Lovely body...

No formal rating as this is my first Banyuls, but in the 90+ range. Bottle was a gift and while the wife and I don’t typically reach for dessert wines, we’re loving this. Nice oxidative wine with lots of clove and cinnamon on the nose. Smells like mulled wine lite.

Honey, fig, some almond notes. Pairs wonderfully with some dark chocolate. Capped off a wonderful Thanksgiving meal and we’ll certainly seek out another bottle.

I’m not an expert on Banyuls and most examples I’ve had to date have been similar to a ruby port. This one wasn’t. Dark jammy blackberry and fresh blueberries. What struck me was the freshness of the ripe fruit aromas. Good middle and long finish. What all strikes me about this wine is that it doesn’t feel fortified; it actually tastes more like a wine. Whereas other Banyuls are best paired with chocolate (where strong alcohol helps) this one just does better on its own. Then again, when it comes to rich chocolate, I often reach for cognac instead. Tasted at Vino’s in Honolulu.

France Trip 2019; 9/9/2019-9/23/2019 (France): Overipe Grenache and Carignan allowed to ferment dry and left in half full barrels.

Hard to describe, a wine living on the edge. Salty, VA, pumpkin, ginger and even more oxidative style than any of the others. Interesting and would probably be great to cook with, but I did not find it to have as much depth as the Mémoire d’Automnes, or as much length. It is not bad, but felt small after the previous wines

France Trip 2019; 9/9/2019-9/23/2019 (France): Rancio style wine left to age for two years in barrel without topping up. Made from Grenache, both Gris and Blanc.

Has a nose similar to Sherry. Nutty and hint of VA. On the palate it is very salty, also much cleaner than I expected. Finish lasts for what feels like an hour, but I'm sure that's not correct... Ginger, tumeric, candied apricot, so much going on it's difficult to pin-point. This wine is dry, but could work with a variety of foods, even things with a little sweetness.

Interesting style that is not for everyone, but I found very enjoyable

France Trip 2019; 9/9/2019-9/23/2019 (France): Solera aged wine dating back to 1952. Made in the "Rancio" style. SO different form the other Banyuls which are very fruit forward. This taste like gingerbread, hazelnuts, clove and so much more. Once again, just like the others, sweet, but not at all cloying. This just screams for fall food, I cannot imagine anything that would be better for Thanksgiving dessert than this. Organic earth aromas, slight fruit pokes through, but is not the focus, delicious and so interesting.

Hard to compare this to the Reserve because the styles are so different.

France Trip 2019; 9/9/2019-9/23/2019 (France): I absolutely loved this bottle! One of my favorite wines tasted on the trip.

A combination of three different wines in theory. One part is aged in smaller barrels. One part is aged in large foudre and one part spends 1 year outside in the sun in what they call bonbons, which are large glass containers in the sun. The wine in the final blend is between 1 year and 13 years old.

The fruit profile on this is surprisingly fresh. I expected a lot of brown almost cooked flavors because of the year in the sun, but they weren't there, instead it was pretty red and black fruit with just more depth. Did get some of those oak flavors of clove and cinnamon, but they just added depth. 16% Alcohol, fuller bodied than the previous Banyuls as well, but still lighter than many port. for around $30 a bottle I don't think you can find a better dessert wine...

France Trip 2019; 9/9/2019-9/23/2019 (France): The way they described this wine was essentially it is the Domaine La Tour Vieille Banyuls Rimage, but then they put it in oak for an additional 10 months. The wines are very different too. The Rimage is driven by bright red fruit. This on the other hand has much more of a fig and raisin taste to it. Surprisingly different considering they start off so similar. This style is somewhere between a tawny and ruby port. Not as aged tasting as a tawny, but has a hint.

France Trip 2019; 9/9/2019-9/23/2019 (France): Exact blend I'm not sure, but it is at least 90% Grenache.

Every time I drink Banyuls I do not understand how they are not more popular. When you compare them to Port, which is made in a similar style they are slightly less alcohol, less burn, but also often taste slightly less sweet. I would call this 3/4 sweet, it is a dessert wine, but not cloying at all. Fruit on this is beautiful, red fruit driven, for a dessert wine it almost taste light on the palate.

50% Grenache Blanc 50% Grenache Gris

This wine is not produced every year. Peach and honeysuckle nose, reminded me of a Viogner nose in a way. Has enough acid to balance this out, it is sweet, but not at all cloying. I know sweet wines live forever, but this comes across like it may be better for early consumption.
